Baylor player Sam Ukwuachu was found guilty of sexually assaulting a Baylor women's soccer player. Briles originally claimed that he knew nothing of Ukwuachu's violent past, but now Chris Petersen has come out saying that when Ukwuachu left Boise State (Petersen's then-job) he specifically made a deliberate effort to contract Briles.

According to Petersen, they spoke and he provided Briles very specific details of Ukwuachu's history including his Boise State disciplinary record and subsequent dismissal from the Broncos football team.

The "what did the coach know and when did he know it" regarding the past transgressions of transfers isn't that new. Oregon basketball is still dealing with their transfer player issue and HC Dana Altman was just removed from a lawsuit filed by the victim.

One thing is still very common, local media who follow college athletics are so concerned about having access, they generally report what won't rock the boat and are very willing to be bullied so that they still have access.

Yep.

College programs are under no obligation to have to allow the local newspaper or local television/radio/etc. media outlets access. If some Alabama-based beat reporter for Alabama tries to make Nick Saban look like an ass for piddly crap, he'll not only revoke their access, he'll revoke whichever media outlet he works for as well.

Bingo!

While the Waco Herald-Tribune is owned by Berkshire Hathaway, that paper's editor, the sports editor, and the beat writer will work to gain the trust of all coaching staffs to impede the work of their local crime reporter.

Unless your name is Sarah Ganim (the Sandusky case breaker), local news prefers to shy away from serious stories regarding the athletic department.

Do you mean they are required or the teams have to grant access to the papers?

I knew colleges and the MLS were selective, but I figured NFL, MLB, NBA pretty much gave anyone access.

Or I could be misunderstanding "access" in the first place...
