coach and player wearing the same number

Phil Hecken, who is running Paul Lukas's UniWatch blog while Lukas is on vacation, ran a note today that indicated that there are two no. 3s on the Tigers: the player Ian Kinsler, and the coach Alan Trammell. Trammell has a front-office position, and has been made a coach temporarily.

The Tigers' manager is obviously oblivious to why this is inappropriate. A writer at the Detroit Free Press has stated that the manager "doesn't know if there's a rule against a coach and player wearing the same number" (!), and quotes the manager as saying "We're going to find out".

Ridiculous. I am sure that there is such a rule; and I hope that the Tigers get called on this immediately. Bobby Bonds could not wear his no. 25 when he coached with the Giants; Joe Torre could not wear his no. 9 when he managed the Cardinals; Mel Stottlemyre could not wear his no. 30 when he coached with the Yankees; and so forth. So Trammell should not be wearing no. 3 if a player has it.

I'm surprised the Tigers hadn't taken his number out of circulation. If he's not directly involved in a play I don't see a big issue as he's filling in temporarily. If he were on the staff all year I'd say he needs to change the number.

I am sure this will get us to "why are coaches wearing uniforms anyway?"

I love that they do. But either way, as long as they are wearing uniforms than two people should not have the same uniform number.* I realize we'd never mix 'em up (particularly since Detroit wears a NOB) but I think it's best practice to not toy with that line. The Tigers either should have retired the number, taken it out of circulation just in case Trammel takes the field as a uniformed coach, or had Trammel wear a different number.

*I know everyone wears the same number with no NOB once a year, but I don't like that either; a patch on the sleeve should suffice.

Disclaimer: If this comment is about an NBA uniform from 2017-2018 or later, do not constitute a lack of acknowledgement of the corporate logo to mean anything other than "the corporate logo is terrible and makes the uniform significantly worse."

The Rockies have the same deal. DJ LeMahieu and Vinny Castilla both wear 9, but this one at least makes sense because Vinny wore it during his playing days. And honestly, I don't mind coaches wearing uniforms as long as Charlie Weis doesn't find a new sport, because it makes it unique and a change of pace from coaches elsewhere.

Trammel wore 3 as well when he played.

I get why this is weird to look at but why does this even matter anymore? What do numbers even matter for anymore? Its just something that comes from tradition because now, in 2015, MLB or any other sport could entirely abandon numbers and nothing would change.

 What would Gretzky be without 99, and Mario in 66, and so on, numbers matter alot in sports !

I still think its weird that baseball coaches wear full uniforms in the first place. Reminds me of Bobby on King of the Hill wanting to be a football coach while wearing his full football uni... and a cape.

Agree, imagine if the NBA has the same rules, Tom Thibodeau and Stan Van Gundy in a tank-top and shorts, all game long :(

Gretzky would be the same great player if he had a unicorn on his back and not the number 99. I know absolutely what you mean as a fan and so on but I meant what do numbers matter as far as for the game itself on field?

Easier to identify players (specifically when calling penalties, goals, assists, etc.)

And this is the problem with that practice of issuing duplicate numbers: it leads inevitably to someone saying this horrible thing.

This reminds me of the time that the Cardinals and Astros tied for the NL Central title in 2001. I had already retired as a baseball fan out of disgust with interleague play and the wild card; but I still felt chagrin when no playoff game was played, as the loser would have qualified for the playoffs anyway as the wild card. And it irked me further when both teams raised banners declaring themselves the division champs. (Officially Houston were the champs, on the basis of a better head-to-head record.)

I was complaining about this, and a guy asked me, "What does it matter?"

What a stupid question. In the course of human events, whether the Astros or Cardinals are division champs in any one season does not matter. Indeed, baseball does not matter, nor does any other sport; it's all a pointless charade as we march inexorably to oblivion.

But when you're a fan with an emotional attachment, and when you have a fascination with the history, then these things have inherent value apart from their utility. And losing them exacts a psychic cost. (If I had not already retired from being a baseball fan in 1997 due to interleague play, I am pretty sure that I would have retired after this 2001 division-title debacle.)

The phenomenon of numbers on uniforms is another example of the same thing. Strictly speaking, these numbers don't have much utility. So one could assert that they don't matter. But that is a surface reading that takes no account of why these pointless activities called sports take such a hold on people's emotions. Uniform numbers matter because they matter; and losing them would be terrible. If someone doesn't get that, then no amount of explanation can help that person.

Those of you expressing why numbers matter are doing so for nostalgic, emotional reasons... Which I wholeheartedly agree with, I am not denying what you are getting at. I do "get that."

But with that said numbers do not matter in terms of the games itself. There is no concrete purpose to uniform numbers outside of identification purposes.

There are times the numbers serve a functional purpose. At a game, I can see the numbers and not read the NOB...sometimes it informs me of who's on base or who's playing where in the field (if I come in late or get stuck in a bathroom line, etc.).
