HedleyLamarr
In the two years between the Omni and Philips Arena, the Atlanta Hawks played their home games at the Georgia Dome and Georgia Tech's Alexander Memorial Coliseum....Also, thanks to a tornado hitting the Georgia Dome, Georgia Tech's AMC also hosted the back-end of the SEC Tournament, with Tech's arch-rival Georgia just happening to go on a miracle run and winning the tournamentThe Atlanta Dream have had to play some playoff games, even WNBA Finals games, at the Arena at Gwinnett instead of their normal home of Philips Arena because of higher revenue events scheduling conflictsAlthough there was no home team, seeing Georgia's Sanford Stadium without their famous hedges so the building could host Olympic soccer kinda fits the bill
slapshot
The Mavericks played a home game against the Super Sonics at Moody Colosseum during the 1984 playoffs. Just over 9,000 spectators could fit in.Moody Madness.Even being the playoffs, the Mavericks of that era probably had a hard time that arena. Weren't they horrible until the late 90s? Weren't they horrible until the late 90s?They actually made the playoffs 6 times in the 80s, although never really amounted to much during any of those runs. The furthest they went was the conference finals in 88 where they lost to the Lakers. It was the 90s that was the true depths of Mavericks history. Something like 9 years of not finishing higher than 10th in the west.

M4One
Somebody mentioned the Lightning, so I'll mention their expansion cousins. The Ottawa Senators played their first 3 and half seasons in the Ottawa Civic Centre, which seats about 10,000. They went all out on the opening ceremony. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9LPzodOcemICan't find any pictures, but the Clippers played a few games every year in Anaheim between 1994 and 1999 and drew more fans per game than back in LA. They came close to moving to Anaheim before deciding to move into the Staples Center.

mcj882000
Following the move from Atlanta, the Calgary Flames played their first 3 seasons at the 6,500-seat Stampede Corral, while the now-neighbouring Saddledome was being built.(featuring Wayne Gretzky on colour commentary, for some reason!) KDubK414
The Packers used to play pre-season games at Camp Randall Stadium in Madison. I know it doesn't fit exactly, but it felt weird because at that time CRS had the old AstroTurf and they didn't change the end zone and midfield logos on the field! So there was a lot of contrast in color.

ClutchIsEverything
I never knew about the Ottawa Senators starting at that dinky place Combined that with the Lightning's first home, what is it with the NHL starting franchises in small barns? I feel like this thread could also be "NBA and NHL games played in sub 12,000 seat venues." My father saw the Bulls play preseason games at high schools. But that was in the early days of the team and really doesn't fit the spirit of this thread.
