Reporting logo theft?

Better question for us is, are you just reporting a sighting of a university logo being used by someone else? Or is a university using a logo you created?

Yup. And also some details around the alleged thieves' usage of said logo.

For example, a professional or college sports team who rips off a logo and produces merchandise for sale is an easy target to prosecute and/or sue.

A non-profit Little League team that rips off a logo - while still wrong - is much less likely to ever be prosecuted, especially if they're not actually benefiting financial from the logo.

And also, the country where the theft is happening matters, too. Unscrupulous manufacturers in China literally steal logos, wordmarks and other design elements ALL THE FREAKING TIME and there's nothing the US/Canadian governments can do because it's China.

You would need Batman's help to stop Chinese manufacturers. Batman has no jurisdiction. He'll find them and make them squeal.

I would start with a cease and desist letter to the university administration and make sure you have documented proof. Without details you have no argument.

Yep, most universities publish a contact for their general counsel--you're best off sending your (detailed) letter here. Also, in your letter, I'd recommend using instead of "theft" more neutral and legally-precise terms like "copyright infringement," "trademark infringement," and "misappropriation." The more sophisticated your letter, the more likely you will not be ignored.

Maybe a little off topic, but I believe that the Detroit Lions technically debuted the leaping lion logo as the primary in 1970. It has been on the helmets since 1962 but I remember reading on year a long time ago that a foreign team playing American football in another country, began using a very similar logo around 1970 as well. Does anybody have an info on that?

I'm a Lions fan, and we don't have much to hold on to but at least we have a nice logo.

Thanks for the information, I should have been clearer. Wanting to pass along an instance of a high school stealing a university's logo. Wouldn't have noticed it if it wasn't for the school getting in the news over the administration being horrible people to begin with. Figure that they deserve as many headaches as possible.

Google the university and "branding guide". That should tell you who's responsible, and you can contact them.

Trademark and copyright enforcement is typically done through the licensing company. It is faster to contact them over general counsel (smaller FBS just have an attorney on retainer).

If one wants to contact the school directly, use athletic department media relations or public relations as they will start the process. But contacting the licencor will quicken the process
