Re: Astros...

The good? I dig the new cap. I've never liked orange as a cap color when the cap is solid orange, crown and brim. Just a bit garish to me personally, and not my cup of tea (same problem I had with the Marlins orange cap). But the navy brim here really balances things out and makes the orange crown work.

The bad? SIDE PANELS. Ick. Few things look more ameteur in baseball than side panels (and I even hate them on BP's, too). And I don't find the tequila sunrise design to be worth forcing; but if you really have to, the only way I think you get it to work is by doing Phillies-size cuffs on the sleeve with the design. Anything else is just too much.

Astros.com also says they will also have a spring training version with palm trees on the back including a patch

Hmm, so that's how they're going to incorporate the new Spring Training elements.

If that was a BP jersey, i would be singing praises at how fantastic that it is.

As a regular alt though? Im not too too sure, but is better than the Dbacks new set

Their uniform guy confirms current BP a jersey is gone and new Sunday alternate jersey will replace it. Fabric also looks to be the same material used on BP's.

IIRC, the outgoing BP was also labeled a Sunday alt.

That cap might be okay if they would match squatchee to brim. Contrasting brims need buttons to match.

Yeah it's really jarring.  I'm pretty shocked they missed that detail. I can't believe it was an intentional decision. If it was, someone needs to be relieved of their duties.

It's been that way ever since they moved to the AL and rebranded. It bothered me then, it bothered me now. I don't ask a lot when it comes to cap designs, but c'mon... If you're going two-tone, the squatchee needs to match the brim. I've noticed that MLB caps generally have three styles...

  1. Brim, crown, squatchee all match. Most MLB caps are like this.
  2. Brim and crown match, squatchee is color-matched to cap logo. Both the Dodgers and Royals have caps of this style.
  3. Brim and squatchee match, crown is another color.
  4. The Astros...

The old BP was the Sunday alt, but it was abandoned briefly when the Astros realized that maybe, just maybe, they shouldn't wear BP jerseys for real games like some kind of GD minor league team.

So they go and essentially replicate the BP with the team name for Sunday games.  And while they might say the true "BP jersey" is gone, there is little chance that MLB and Majestic would allow a team to toss out a revenue stream (the BP jersey).  Until they prove otherwise, that new jersey is the BP jersey, brought back into Sunday service.  Major step backwards.

And without seeing it up close, it is either the BP jersey material or the new "upgraded" COOLBASE like Arizona has for their new stuff.  It's definitely not the standard Majestic jersey template.  Everything about the new 2016 Majestic MLB line is disappointing.

Go Astros!

Go Texans!

Go Rockets!

Go Javelinas!

Eww. That new cap is especially eww.

I freaking hate when the squatchee doesn't match the bill color if the bill color is a contrasting color from the crown of the hat. This is design balance 101

That's not what I mean. If the hat color and bill color match then I'm okay with the button being a different color (see: Mets, Dodgers, Royals, Giants, Phillies). If the hat color and the bill color are contrasting colors like the Braves, A's, etc. then the squatchee should always be the same color as the bill.

The Astros break this "rule" on these hats as well

The Phillies don't do it.. the only cap they have with a contrasting bill is the blue cap w/ red bill.. it has a red squatchee.

the only other current cap to kinda break this rule would be the Padres throwback cap - mostly brown crown w/ brown bill, yellow bell panel, yellow squatchee..

Former caps would include the Angels lowercase "a" with offset halo (navy crown, red bill, navy squatchee), Angels "fancy" LA cap (navy crown, red bill, navy squatchee), and the Angels "Disney" cap (navy crown, powder blue bill, red squatchee).. i'm sure there are more, but these are ones that stuck out to me.

The only reason i can see for breaking this "rule" is perhaps teams with very colorful and somewhat large cap logos might feel like the additional color on the squatchee might be "too much"..? the color balance on the navy Astros cap doesn't feel as "off" to me as it does on the orange version, even though it's the same problem.. i'm not sure why, but maybe that has something to do with it (or maybe it's just bad design by the Astros)

What the Astros should've done is introduce the 'shooting star' unis as a Sunday alternate. IF you absolutely HAVE to have a navy top, maybe use it as a road alternate? The navy will pair better with gray pants, as opposed to the orange top/gray pants

Welcome, and great post - it would have been a great opportunity to put a shooting star onto the jersey.

It just bugs me to no end that the Astros have this squatchee issue on TWO caps, especially when it's been done correctly on their BP cap.

That said, the current orange-billed cap is my favorite cap. I just wish it had an orange squatchee. And I wish their solid navy blue caps had an orange squatchee, too, like their original navy caps did in the '60s (both Colt .45s and Astros).
