nash61 Posted October 29, 2015 Share Posted October 29, 2015 I was thinking today about hockey uniforms, and how with the exception of the Rangers and the Blue Jackets, 94% of the NHL matches the helmets of their dark jerseys with their pants colour.Why? That's just the way it's always been done. What other examples can you think of, and what exceptions? Its so natural to associate QB numbers, skill position numbers, linemen numbers, linebacker numbers, but its so random if you think about it.It's actually for the benefit of referees because of football's position rules. Specifically about linemen/eligible receivers.As a fan, and someone who became a lifelong football loyalist as a child, the groupings of numbers by position invites and accelerates the learning of an otherwise complicated game and rulebook. SmackNCheese Posted October 29, 2015 Share Posted October 29, 2015 Number restrictions definitely help out when you are a Safety/ Linebacker and you need to identify running backs in the slot, tight ends, wildcat formations, ect.Separately, I've always wondered why baseball can have all these stadium inconsistencies (the hill in Houston's center field, Tampa Bay's rafters, the green monster, different field lengths, ect.) but football has nothing of the sort. (Hockey, of course, is another story)Non-goalies not wearing #1. (also goalies wearing certain numbers, though that pool gets bigger all the time)Plus even goalies have kinda stopped wearing it (which I think is too bad) Disclaimer: If this comment is about an NBA uniform from 2017-2018 or later, do not constitute a lack of acknowledgement of the corporate logo to mean anything other than "the corporate logo is terrible and makes the uniform significantly worse." My gut reaction was that the dimensions almost always have to be the same. They are in MLB regarding the infield and the trajectory of the foul lines. But actually not all hockey rinks are the same either. So if that's the case, I suppose you could argue that basketball courts could have some variation. That seems weird...so maybe you are right; it's all just "because."For baseball it's probably how old the game is and the way ballparks had to be squeezed into city blocks when the entire fan base came by foot or streetcar. Jamikel Posted October 29, 2015 Share Posted October 29, 2015 The acceptable color schemes for any sport.Like how white pants/shorts are acceptable, even standard, in basketball, football, soccer, and baseball, but entirely wrong in hockey.Or how striping continues from the shorts to the jersey on most basketball uniforms, but are very rare in other sports (well, they've become common in football, but those are almost uniformly* ugly.)Or how hockey jerseys look incomplete without hem stripes, but other sports don't have them at all.Or how basketball has white home/colored away, football (mostly) dark home, white away, baseball has white/gray, and soccer has a main kit and a clash kit.Or the position of numbers, wordmarks, and logos on various jerseys.*pun not intended Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
