Falls apart in the third, mostly because of the casting - Krasinski just doesn't have the chops to pull off his arc and Zellweger's utter lack of charm kills any chemistry with Clooney. And nor do I want to.I think the Seann William Scott Goon is underrated. Violent and stupid, yes, but it had a fair amount of heart.Rounders might be the most influential "sports" movie of all time; it, Chris Moneymaker, and Bill Simmons writing about it helped launch a new wave of poker players. In the movie, Matt Damon says something to the effect of "it's the same seven guys at the final table of the World Series of Poker every year; that can't be a coincidence." It turns out it was because those were the only seven guys that knew about WSOP before Rounders (exaggerating, of course, but only a little).My choice though, is Breaking Away. It's about cycling, but also about the tension between college students, the residents of the towns they temporarily live in, opera, and more. Also, it's one of the last great things Jackie Earl Haley did before he resurfaced in Watchmen. Honorable mention to Bad News Bears and Bad News Bears in Breaking Training, though I bet kids sports movies need their own special category. A modern-day miracle of a film that everyone needs to see, just because they really went for the most crazy draft-day shenanigans possible, and made it almost semi-believable. It's basically the draft sequences of Jerry Maguire, but for two hours.Kevin Costner has the best sports movies. In addition to Bull Durham, there's also For the Love of the Game, Field of Dreams, and my second-favorite sports movie: Tin Cup.
