Background

So before Thanksgiving Break this past week, we read "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner" by Samuel Coleridge in our English class. As our optional creative assignment this week, we had to create an artistic response to each of the seven parts of the poem. Naturally, I decided to make a 7-team soccer league based on the poem. All this work resulted in a brief hiatus in my CSL thread, but feel free to behold this literary side-trip! :)

I already have all seven teams done and completed, but I will post three today and the remaining four in the next two days.

If you're interested, here is a link to the poem in question.

Alba AFC

The name “Alba” is taken from the beginning of the word “albatross”, which in Part I is integral to the good fortunes of the sailors. An albatross is seen at the top of the crest. The light blue in the color scheme is representative of the ocean, while the yellow is representative to how the sailors “hailed [the Albatross] in God’s name”.

The home kit is a simple, striped design with the stripes and colors taken directly from the crest. The clash kit is inspired by the ship’s journey to icy Antarctic waters; the turquoise evokes icebergs while wave patterns emerge from either side of the sublimated albatross outline (darker blue at the bottom and lighter blue at the top suggest the change in direction caused by the Albatross’ good fortunes. The kits are supplied by Nike and the sponsor is ChristianMingle.com, as the Mariner is outside a church as he tells his story to the Wedding-Guest.

Midlands United

In Part II, the ship is taken northward to the Equator, hence the name “Midlands”. The crest evokes a threatening feeling, with its red/black/gray color scheme and the hard angles of the crest and number font. The arrows symbolize the arrows the Mariner uses to shoot down the Albatross.

The home kit is a simple red-on-white jersey with black trim; the red “sash” that goes around the neckhole represents the Albatross that the Mariner wore, as a manifestation of the sin of his shooting down of it. The clash kit is a red jersey with a black stripe across the center, denoting the “Line”, or the Equator. The kits are supplied by Adidas and the sponsor is CopperSky, a fictional company whose name is inspired by the poem’s description of the calm tropical ocean as having “a hot and copper sky”.

Graymere Sporting

22786947593_83d77f72c2_c.jpg

The name and crest evokes the feeling of mystery and danger that the “skeleton ship” in Part III brings. The crest is shaped like the front of a wooden ship, with the crest having three “sails”. The black-and-white stripes evoke a skeleton, while the “G” that is placed on the center sail is shaped like a crescent moon, which is ever-prevalent in this poem. The nickname for the team is “The Spectres”, as a Spectre-Woman and her Deathmate is aboard the ship in the poem.

The home kit incorporates the striping pattern that is inspired by skeletons. The clash kit is a gray (representative of the fog that appears at the ship’s arrival) jersey that has a sublimated ship at the front torso. The kits are supplied by Puma, and the sponsor is the Vivemorte Hotel and Casino, as the Spectre-Woman and the Deathmate play a game of dice to determine the fate of the seamen on the Mariner’s ship.

Oooh! Mini series! Awesome!

Three great designs and very clever references to the poem.

When you finish soccer, will you go back to basketball concepts for a while?

Welcome to Kansas, where you can see your future, literally.

I'm glad you're liking the references I made for this English project! There's four more to go! :)

My basketball series is indeed not finished yet, but I'm unsure if I'll find the motivation to get it back and going again. Maybe, though...

Celestia Athletic

Firstly, Celestia’s name is just the introduction to the team’s identity, which embodies the celestial beauty of the stars and sea-snakes that the Mariner learns in Part IV to love unconditionally to break free from his curse. The crest is stylized as an indigenous art that values the sea-snake as being just as beautiful as the stars above (as seen in the “eyes” of the sea-snake, which is the same color as the night sky) and the ocean below (represented by the “waves” at the bottom-right). The light green color symbolizes the color given to the sea-snakes, while the purple replaces the blue that also describes the sea-snakes.

The home kit is a simple purple-on-green jersey, with the diagonal sash representing a sea-snake. The clash kit is a purple jersey that is two-toned to emphasize its wavy pattern. The kits are supplied by Nike, and the sponsor is 7-Up, as the Mariner endures “seven days, seven nights” under the curse of the Albatross.

Novaby SC

23414135925_6353562c35_c.jpg

The name “Novaby” is a combination of “novem-” (Latin for “nine) and “abyss” (Latin for “depth”), as the Spirits in the poem travel “nine fathom deep”. In Part V, the Mariner listens to the sweet songs of the skylark, which takes center stage on the crest. The orange and yellow diagonal lines on the crest represent both the rain and the aurora australis described in this part of the poem. The crescent moon, which the rain falls under, is at the upper-left corner of the crest.

The home kit is a simple white jersey with a bar of diagonal lines (waved to evoke the aurora australis) across the upper torso. The clash kit is a yellow jersey with orange pinstripes and brown trim. The kits are supplied by Under Armour, and the sponsor is Gemeinhardt, a major flute company (the skylark’s song is described as “like a lonely flute”).

Hello I have a question. I was wondering how many different colored pencils (or whatever you use) do you have?

I was starting to possibly draw my own concepts (because I am to lazy to learn how to computer stuff) and I just wondered

The number of actual colored pencils I have are beyond me, but if it's the number of colors you're curious about, just think of the colors you would find in a 50-pack of Crayola colored pencils. To supplement the colored pencils, I also use various fine-tipped (and ultra fine-tipped) colored markers as well.

I like the color choices for both teams, they stand out!

I would love to see a los altos hockey league! I would love it!

I've never done a green/purple color scheme before; it's certainly cool experimenting with unusual color schemes, indeed~

As for a hockey league, that doesn't seem to be in my immediate realm of possibility. Someday, perhaps...

Antesera County

23046149109_df1c6fbb58_c.jpg

The name “Antesera[ph]” translates into “old angel” in Latin; in Part VI, all the Mariner’s deceased seamen turn into angelic spirits. The “Ante-”, the inclusion of “County”, and the blue/green color scheme represent the Mariner’s return to his beloved home. The crest incorporates a cross (to represent the churches depicted in this part) and angel wings over a green-striped shield. The motto “Semper vado protinus” is Latin for “Always look forward”, as the Mariner dared not to look behind him, as he know that dread was following him.

The home kit incorporates the green stripes of the shield and adds blue trim to it. The gray clash kit shows how the deceased seamen became seraphs over the bay’s “crimson shadows”. The kits are supplied by Umbro, and the sponsor is Kirkland Signature, as kirks, or churches, are described throughout this part.

SC Green Bluff

23387962446_bda475315c_c.jpg

“Green Bluff” is a rather literal description of the “wood/which slopes down to the sea” (Coleridge 514-15) that the Hermit lives in. The green/brown color scheme evoke a natural setting, as in the forest. The colors in the crest are arranged in a way to abstractly depict the trees in the forest.

The home kit is a simple, striped jersey, two-toned with green stripes and having a brown trim. The clash kit is a color reversal of the home kit. The kits are supplied by Adidas, and the sponsor is Allstate, as they make sure you are “in good hands”, like the salvation that the Hermit is to the Mariner.

So that's a wrap for this short, little 7-team league of an English project! Hope y'all enjoyed it~
