My attempt at oilers rebrand

Design-wise, I think you've got too many outlines on ... well, pretty much everything. The lettering, the outer circle, the inner circle, even the tools. Simplify and cut down how many outlines you have going on, and you'll be ahead.

Also, your letters are uneven (you can see how the top of the L is lower than the others) and they're not spaced out very evenly. And the way the bottoms of the letters are warped doesn't match up with the contours of the outside circle. If you're going to add a letter, then you can't just copy over from the old logo β€” you've got to start over again with the warping and the effects.

From a design standpoint, you need to get the words aligned correctly so there is a consistent distance between them and the lettering.

The "T" shouldn't have a tail, in my opinion. The bottom part should be more similar to the "I".

The circle at the top shouldn't have different striping than the main circle. I'm assuming it's because you closed off the "drop" from the original.

What you did do, was take a classic logo and tried to make it fit with a new name (which is just one letter off). It has no personality of it's own under the "Toilers" moniker. I'd say hit the drawing board and create something that actually has significance with the name. Until then, you can tell people to "@#$% off" all you want, but you're going to get people telling you that it won't work as an Oilers rebrand.

I guess I'll @#$% off, then.

Same...I guess...

Appreciate the honesty lol. In my defence I tried this a year ago and got absolutely shat on. Like its on thing not to like something but on some level I'm just having fun with my own ideas and it's annoying to have people just :censored: on the concept when thats not what I'm really here for.

Thanks, yea I think you're right. I was trying to change it just enough for it to be a fresh take, and the lines thing was a bit of an attempt at that whole line effect that you see on first nation art, but I don't think I've executed it all that well.

Thanks for separating your design critique and being fair. I appreciate it. I can definitely make all of those changes.

I know it seems like a cop-out, but, in my head anyways, I like the idea of acknowledging the oilers within a new, but slightly similar thematically concept. Like the whole Oil industry thing is built off people who work really damn hard, and thats kinda what the whole Toiler thing comes from. Like being almost too hard of a worker. To me anyways, this is literally what the whole city of Edmonton is actually about, even more than oil, but I know how resistant people are to anything new, and obviously it's not flashy either(but I think that's actually the beauty of it - the people here aren't flashy, they're working class). I know some people hate it, but like I said, it's my idea, and partially I'm doing it to troll a friend of mine, so maybe everyone could keep that in mind before really laying into me.

They're just drawings after all :P

Why does it say 'Toilers'?

People who work too hard for their own good. This city is ridiculously working class and I, for one, think the city is about more than the oil industry.

From a design perspective, Glenn pretty much nailed it. But I think as a design concept, it just doesn't work. The word "toil" has a negative connotation to it - A "life of toil" isn't exactly what people strive for. Hell, if you Google "toil," it autocompletes to toilet. I see what you're trying to do, but you're trying to spread something to make it fit your needs and it's just not working. There are better, more complimentary words to describe a hardworking people.

Yeah. I get that. I'm trying to take it back :P. Like I get that people automatically do the "oh, it looks like toilets thing" but idk. I just find a person who is willing to work very hard for a good cause to be a good thing. Like if a life of toil is down in the service of a greater good, is it still negative. I know I'm probably wasting my time and people think it's dumb, but I genuinely look at myself as a bit of a toiler, and I can see the positive of it. I just look at it as someone who isn't really satisfied with an over-abundance of leisure. Idk. Maybe I am completely out to lunch but I'm having such a tough time letting it go. And the fact that it includes(aka acknowledges the "oiler") seems perfect to me, even though people just say I should just go in a new direction.

I've worked enough :censored:ty labour jobs to appreciate the beauty of a hard days work.

Like would it really be better in a hypothetical rebrand to just completely forget about the oil industry? I know the rich history it has had in this city but I personally believe it's time to turn over a new leaf, at least partially. I'm sorry guys, I know everyone thinks it's dumb but I can't let it go. Thanks for the design comments though, I really have grown to appreciate the wisdom on this board. Theres a great community here and it's been a pleasure seeing your work and having you help mine improve.

Dallas is more than just cowboys. Boston is more than just the Irish-American community.

Sports team names don't have to represent every aspect of a community. Some don't even reflect their communities at all.

So this is more of an identity with the background of a personal story / inside joke right? As opposed to an actual rebrand of the Oilers?

In any case, a couple of the comments above basically summed up the issues design wise. Officeglenn mentioned the outlines needing to be toned down... as well as the fact that by adding a letter, you need to rework how the word fits to the contour of the outer circle. And as Dan O'Mac mentioned, the 'T' doesn't need the tail. As he stated, refer to the 'I' and maybe have the bottom portion curve slightly towards the 'O'.

I can see what you are trying to do. But you still have a bit to do working out the type. The type is what will make or break a logo like this.

The idea I see here is : :censored::

Design:Half-assed

Concept: ridiculous

Toilers, seriously? Whatever you're on, STOP! With design feedback comes concept feedback.

Don't like criticism? YOU may F-off!

He said he would appreciate design feedback and told us to critique away. He wants criticism. Constructive....which obviously you did not contribute to at all.

Was there any need for this?

^exactly. And in response to earlier. I actually like it(concept wise), although living in edmonton I get why everyone hates it. I tried the same idea earlier(albeit more poorly executed than this one - if you can believe it) and got torn to shreds but mostly on concept, which isn't all that helpful when you aren't looking for concept critique. But yes, on some level, it is a troll. Lol billc, I have absolutely no problem with criticism whatsoever, and generally I'm actually pretty open to concept critique as well, but I had a feeling coming in this would happen so I thought I would just warn people not to bother. As far as design critique, thats what makes this site glorious. I can't count the number of times I've started out with a halfassed idea and ended up with something no one would have imagined. You can check my Hamilton soccer club thread(which the supporters group has adopted as their main logo now as proof) to see how far they can come.

This one sucks now, and like the concept or not, by the time it's done, troll or not. It'll look good.

oh, and curtly eat a bag of @#$%'s :D haters

What's the point of making an account if all you're going to do is being an ***hole. I may have chosen to not comment because but at least I wasn't a jerk about it. Honestly, criticism isn't saying something looks like **** it's saying what can be improved. By saying its "ridiculous" you're not helping. So please "F-off!" and learn how to interact with people, you conceited, spoiled brat. Thank you.

Design-wise; @officeglenn pretty much nailed it. It has potential.

Thanks for those who offered design critique, one question/inquiry for you guys. If I am trying to subtly try to use the outlines look like native american art, how would you guys think I might go about doing this. Not sure if I'll end up going with that but I wanted to see if it was possible. Cheers :)
