Very aware that they are controlled by Comcast, thank you.

All I'm saying is that you really shouldn't accuse the Leafs or their parent company of being this evil monolith when your team is owned by freakin' Comcast.

As are 99% of the Big Four teams.

Shouldn't that make it worse? If we're penalizing teams for the degree to which their parent companies are monolithic corporate overlords then the Flyers/Comcast has MLSE/the Leafs beat!

The sheer dominance of Bell and Rogers over any other competition for cable service in Canada is what I think irks me the most. I think that was the point I was trying to make.

That's fine, and incredibly fair. I won't disagree with you there.

My point is that Comcast is just as bad in the States. Ask American Comcast users for Comcast-centric horror stories. If we just look at things in terms of teams, their parent companies, the relationship those companies have with the NHL, and dominance in the cable industry? The Flyers are the American Maple Leafs.

I'm fine if you're a Leafs fan who's been actually watching them since the 60s or 70s (explains the Boomers). Anyone in my age bracket or younger is simply delusional and feeding the corps that will happily take their money to give them an inferior product based on nostalgia.

So I'm a sucker as a Leafs fan because I was born in 1987? Sorry, that doesn't fly. I was born and raised in Kitchener-Waterloo. It's practically a suburb of the GTA. I think I have just as much of a right to call myself a Leafs fan free from harassment as anyone else does.

"Delusional"? No, I know the team sucks. I'm well aware. They're still the team I grew up rooting for though.

Philly's at least been to the Finals several times since their last Cup win. Several times. Toronto hasn't even made it past the third round - EVER.

That's nifty. How many Cups have the Flyers won since you jumped on their bandwagon? I say that because the Leafs could win the East, get swept in the Cup Finals, and it ultimately wouldn't matter. The drought would continue. It's the Cup or bust.

Technically they're not owned by comcast.

1. Doesn't fly, eh? Neither do leaves.
You're a sucker for going with the flow "just because" it's the closest team to you, and has always been. I was born in 1987 as well.
Actually, just turned 29 on Feb. 3.

2. I don't think you should have joined a sports forum if you expected to be free from harassment for rooting for team X.
I actually used to root for the Leafs as well, right up until 2003-04, when they were defeated (by Philadelphia). And then the lockout of 04-05 happened, and I decided I didn't owe the Leafs a dime. I switched to a team that I thought was going to be a winner (as well as one that had Northern Ontario players on it).

3. Well, that (fan-ship) can change over time. There's no reason to let something stay just because it's always been.
The way I see it, fans don't really owe their allegiance to any one team (at least, Big 4), given that 99% of them are corporate-owned playthings that their billionaire owners can move at any point. You could change your allegiance at any point if you were tired of suffering. I'm surprised that Browns Nation or Cubs Nation still have fans given their histories of futility.

4. Well, if you want to measure success or failure of a team based solely on whether or not they win the league title, it's a disappointment for 29/30 teams every season. That's no way to live, as a sports fan.

Your major flaw in this reasoning is that you've assumed that I've just gone "well Leafs are closer herp-derp." It started out as a local thing, and in time it grew into a true fandom. Through the ups of the Sundin/Roberts/Tucker years through the scuttling and rebuild after rebuild. I've see the team come within a few games of reaching the Stanley Cup Finals as well as finish in the league basement.

Going "hey the Sens could be good for a while, I think I'll root for them!" would just be cheap. Ultimately EVERY reason given for rooting for any one team is silly. Even your "northern Ontario Flyers players" justification. It's no more or less sound then the Leafs being local to me. Still though? I think once you cast your lot in with a team then you ought to be loyal.

Is writing off every season that doesn't end with a championship a failure any way to live as a fan? Maybe not. Neither is hopping from team to team because you think the one you're rooting for currently will stop being good.

I knew Canadians were more liberal, but you guys sell pot cookies right in supermarkets?  This might explain the milk in bags...

Dumb question...

Is the new logo permanent or is it just for the 100th season? The wording of some of the press releases made it seem like it might be just for next yr.

Stop giving me false hope!

I was wondering the same thing at first. But after reading more recent replies on this thread, it turned into just wishful thinking that the Ballard Leaf was just taking a year long sabbatical. RIP, Ballard Leaf. Some of us will miss you dearly.

Would have found this perfectly acceptable. Oh well.

It is certainly acceptable but still nowhere near as good as what was unveiled on Tuesday.

And props to Magnus for achieving the impossible by making me glad the Blackhawks won in 2010...

what the #$*# are you talking about?

Jesus you people are idiots incapable of rational thought.

Wait, he said pot leaf.  I know what a pot leaf looks like.  I will just compare any leaf to one now.  Never mind the similarities I will just assume he meant all maple leafs are pot leafs and never give that up.

This times a million.

I'm a fan of the New York Jets and Rangers. Neither franchise is all that great historically (though the Rangers have won a Stanley Cup and 2 conference titles in my lifetime). I have some huge issues with both teams' ownership groups.

Am I a sucker for being a fan of those teams? Am I a sucker for having invested years and years into the Jets and never having even seen them sniff the Super Bowl? Is a Leafs fan a sucker for loving the local team in spite of them having had a rough go of it for most of the expansion era? Not a bit. It's part and parcel of loving a team, which is rarely ever for rational reasons (how often is any love out of truly rational reasons?). Every team goes through downturns and struggles (some more than others). Every fanbase has different definitions and expectations of success. Every franchise has some business-related ugliness behind it. It's the price you pay for an emotional connection to a team, and to have a sense of joy when they actually do succeed.

I get that, but it still looks more like a pot leaf than a maple leaf.  Especially for an illustration.

And there it is, everyone. The moment I became a Leafs fan.

When i was a kid and watched one of my first hockey games on TV, i thought the commentator said "Toronto Make Believes"...... only later when i saw the jersey  in close up , i noticed the logo said Maple Leafs

Guess you can apply that story to this discussion, you can use your imagination and "believe" the leaf to be anything you want it to be.
