But yeah, for me, the Carolina Hurricanes are generally a dead zone of my hockey knowledge. I think I know less about that franchise and its fanbase than any other in the league. There's Rod Brind'Amour, Eric Staal, Cam Ward, that 2006 Cup Run... and... um... Ray Whitney? Brett Hedican? EDIT: Oh, hell! They got swept by the Red Wings in that other Cup Final, right? Huh...

And as someone that kind of chronicles their life in relation to hockey seasons, I honestly can't remember what I did during the 2004-05 lockout. It was my freshman year of high school, but the rest is a blank spot.

The 02 team had Ron Francis and Arturs Irbe and I think Brind'Amour was on that team. I can remember wanting so badly to see a Toronto-Detroit SCF and instead we got an all red intersquad scrimmage with a team nobody cared about getting rolled by that monster Red Wings team. The Hurricanes shockingly won game 1 and then got swept from there.

In 04-05 I was playing hockey for my high school, but the only hockey coverage I paid attention to was what I read in the hockey news. I don't think I watched a single game anywhere. It was so weird seeing pictures of all the guys in AHL uniforms or wearing the billboard uniforms in the European leagues. In the summer and fall of 05 I distinctly remember not being that excited for the NHL to come back. It probably took until around the middle of the 06-07 season for me to jump fully back in.

Mark Recchi played there. (He also played for the Thrashers.)

Justin Williams began his Game 7 Magic with Carolina.

Andrew Ladd won a Cup there.

Doug Weight played there, too.

I guess I've had to pay attention to them a little more "Keep your friends close and your enemies closer.".  They had a really nice run in the 2009 playoffs...took out the Devils and Bruins in 7 before being dog-tired against Pittsburgh.  For a while, they were just 'there'...not quite in perennial playoff contention, but never being the worst team in the league.  (Sounds familiar.)

Not sure on this Fred Poulin guy's credibility, but apparently Peter Karmanos is meeting again with Quebec interests:

And Karmanos would stay on as a minority owner:

There may be some truth to these, but at this point I'd say the announcement is just a bit too ambitious.

I think this has been said before, but in hindsight I feel like when the Canes moved out of Hartford, they went from playing in a mediocre market to a subpar one. (Well, after a couple of seasons in a terrible market.)

Yes, that is accurate. Hartford is no paradise, but at least their television deal covered the entirety of New England, which in today's RSN world would make them a fairly decent commodity. But Raleigh, I mean, who cares.

oh that's right. I think I remember they hurriedly threw together some "sportsy" on-air graphics and logos to get away from the OLN leaf logo.

2005-2007 was like that episode of Futurama when everyone on the planet keeps blacking out and waking up at a later time and nobody knows what's happened during the black outs. A legitimately bad team went to game 7 of the finals, May be the least remarkable Stanley Cup winner ever won the Stanley Cup, the Buffalo Sabres were really good but started wearing the ultra weird Buffaslug uniforms, Ovechkin was doing awesome things but seemed like a crazy person, I thought Nikolai Zherdev was going to work.

Allow me to make this about me. Columbus was Karmanos' first choice in relocating the Whalers: http://www.nytimes.com/1997/04/13/nyregion/splitsville-for-hartford-and-the-whalers.html?pagewanted=all

But our arena situation was even worse than Raleigh/Durham's at the time. I think they were going to renovate and add seats to the fairgrounds where the Columbus Chill played for a temporary arena until the city could figure out a permanent building. The fairgrounds were an ancient and tiny arena used mostly for livestock shows until minor league hockey came along. It was perfect for the "Slap Shot" Chill, but even with upgrades and additional seating it would've been the most embarrassing arena for an NHL team to call home even just as a temporary venue. Worse than the Sharks in the Cow Palace or the Senators in the Civic Centre.

Wow... (allow me to make this about us)... the Ohio State fairgrounds "coliseum"? Great memories. A lot of fans like to refer to certain arenas as "barns"... this place literally was a barn.

Back when I was just a little kid we went all the time to see the Columbus Owls.  Guaranteed 3 to 4 fight every night.  Good times.

Ok... sorry for the hijack... carry on.

Carolina did start the trend that caught like fire due to their Cup run....ice girls.  Women wearing little-to-no clothing while twirling around and tossing shirts and helping with ice maintenance.....

Yep!

Best picture I could find:

For my era it was the Columbus Chill. The Chill games were always rowdy and had tons of wacky promotions and giveaways. I proudly wear my Chill tshirt whenever I can.

I thought it was the Islanders who started the ice girls, which now teams can't have anymore because lesbians get upset.

They may very well have, but it wasn't really a thing (or thingees) until TV kept showing the Storm Squad girls throughout the playoffs when Carolina won the Cup.

Hurricanes got rocked 5-1 last night by the Jackets. Probably looking way too much into this, but I wonder if they found out something we don't know. The Thrashers play took a serious downturn after they learned they were moving.

IF there's going to be an announcement next week, it would almost certainly be a Friday afternoon story.  It's after their last home game, and it would let the story get stale over the weekend.

Doubtful.  Those Thrashers, just like these Hurricanes, just didn't have a talented-enough roster.

I've never understood this logic.  Why would players quit on the season due to possible relocation?  They're still playing for their jobs next season, whether it's for their current team or any other team in the league.  Same with the coaching staffs and the front office (at least, the wing of the front office that deals with personnel).  It's not like they're all losing their jobs, no matter what.  Certainly doesn't benefit them if they dog the rest of the season.

Way more often than not, teams that are part of relocation discussions (or are relocating)...part of that equation is because the team isn't playing well and hasn't for a little while.

You know, getting the Hurricanes out of Raleigh-Durham would open up some corporate dollars for Major League Baseball. I think most people there would make that trade. Just gotta hope Karmanos doesn't use the money from the sale to buy the baseball team, hire Brandon Inge as his general manager, and start another war with Mike Ilitch.
