There's Rod Brind'Amour, Eric Staal, Cam Ward, that 2006 Cup Run... and... um... Ray Whitney? Brett Hedican? EDIT: Oh, hell! They got swept by the Red Wings in that other Cup Final, right? Huh... And as someone that kind of chronicles their life in relation to hockey seasons, I honestly can't remember what I did during the 2004-05 lockout. It was my freshman year of high school, but the rest is a blank spot. The 02 team had Ron Francis and Arturs Irbe and I think Brind'Amour was on that team. I can remember wanting so badly to see a Toronto-Detroit SCF and instead we got an all red intersquad scrimmage with a team nobody cared about getting rolled by that monster Red Wings team. The Hurricanes shockingly won game 1 and then got swept from there. In 04-05 I was playing hockey for my high school, but the only hockey coverage I paid attention to was what I read in the hockey news. I don't think I watched a single game anywhere. It was so weird seeing pictures of all the guys in AHL uniforms or wearing the billboard uniforms in the European leagues. In the summer and fall of 05 I distinctly remember not being that excited for the NHL to come back. It probably took until around the middle of the 06-07 season for me to jump fully back in. Andrew Ladd won a Cup there. Doug Weight played there, too. I guess I've had to pay attention to them a little more "Keep your friends close and your enemies closer.". They had a really nice run in the 2009 playoffs...took out the Devils and Bruins in 7 before being dog-tired against Pittsburgh. For a while, they were just 'there'...not quite in perennial playoff contention, but never being the worst team in the league. (Sounds familiar.) Hartford is no paradise, but at least their television deal covered the entirety of New England, which in today's RSN world would make them a fairly decent commodity. It was perfect for the "Slap Shot" Chill, but even with upgrades and additional seating it would've been the most embarrassing arena for an NHL team to call home even just as a temporary venue. Worse than the Sharks in the Cow Palace or the Senators in the Civic Centre. Wow... (allow me to make this about us)... the Ohio State fairgrounds "coliseum"? Great memories. A lot of fans like to refer to certain arenas as "barns"... this place literally was a barn. Back when I was just a little kid we went all the time to see the Columbus Owls. Those Thrashers, just like these Hurricanes, just didn't have a talented-enough roster. I've never understood this logic. Why would players quit on the season due to possible relocation? They're still playing for their jobs next season, whether it's for their current team or any other team in the league. Same with the coaching staffs and the front office (at least, the wing of the front office that deals with personnel). It's not like they're all losing their jobs, no matter what. Certainly doesn't benefit them if they dog the rest of the season. Way more often than not, teams that are part of relocation discussions (or are relocating)...part of that equation is because the team isn't playing well and hasn't for a little while. I think most people there would make that trade.
