IHL 2017

A few years back I did an IHL what-if concept, and I decided to do it a little differently this time. The IHL will be taking the place of the ECHL, but at the same level as the AHL like it was when it existed. There will be 30 teams to coincide with the 30 NHL teams. Each team will have a home and away uniform, third, throwback, NHL affiliate uniform, and special event uniform.

Teams - NHL Affiliations

San Antonio Dragons - Anaheim

Phoenix Roadrunners - Arizona

Dayton Gems - Boston

Saginaw Generals - Buffalo

Salt Lake Golden Eagles - Calgary

Indianapolis Checkers/Ice- Carolina

Grand Rapids Owls - Chicago

Toledo Goaldiggers - Columbus

Denver Grizzlies - Colorado

Houston Aeros - Dallas

Detroit Vipers - Detroit

Lansing Lancers - Edmonton

Orlando Solar Bears - Florida

Long Beach Ice Dogs - Los Angeles

Kalamazoo Wings - Minnesota

Quebec Rafales - Montreal

Cincinnati Cyclones - Nashville

Flint Spirits - New Jersey

Port Huron Flags - New York Islanders

Albany Choppers - New York Rangers

Sarnia Sailors - Ottawa

Fort Wayne Komets - Philadelphia

Muskegon Lumberjacks - Pittsburgh

Peoria Rivermen - St. Louis

San Francisco Spiders - San Jose

Atlanta Knights - Tampa Bay

Windsor Bulldogs - Toronto

Las Vegas Thunder - Vancouver

Des Moines Capitols - Washington

Kansas City Blades - Winnipeg

Up first are the San Antonio Dragons. For their design, I came up with a modern logo to replace the cartoony logo they wore in the IHL.

The main logo was inspired by this logo...

The home and away uniforms for the dragons are traditional yet modern in design with the striping based on the main logo.

The third uniform brings red forward from just an accent color:

The throwbacks are based on their 1996-97 uniforms:

Their NHL Affiliate Night features the Ducks' colors with the Mighty Duck logo as a shoulder patch:

Since San Antonio has a few major military bases, they will be wearing special uniforms for Military Appreciation Night:

Nice start to this series. Just a few things I'd like to mention:

1. Some of these affiliations don't make sense to me.

2. The new logo looks like a bird to my eyes, not a Dragon.

3. I like the use of red on the alt and which it was on the home and away striping too.

4. The affiliate jerseys isn't needed. I'd just add a Ducks patch or something to all the jerseys.

Jerseys are pretty cool. I really hope you end up doing Indianapolis Ice over Checkers.

If there's any C&C I could give, it would be to change "SAN ANTONIO" in the logo to white as it gets lost being green.

Why no Milwaukee team?

The Milwaukee Admirals, Grand Rapids Griffins, and Chicago Wolves will not be part of this since they are in the AHL

Great start, did you create some of these city-mascot combos or are they all IHL 90s names?

These were all IHL franchises at some point.

I'm leaning towards the Ice.

Up next are the Phoenix Roadrunners, the IHL affiliates of the Arizona Coyotes. Much like the Dragons, I developed a less cartoonish logo set that fits in the 21st century.

For their uniforms, I used a traditional Hopi (local Native tribe) pattern in a non-conventional sleeve and hem stripe to create a modern look.

Cool stuff.  The only thing I don't really like is the rounded strokes on the new logo.   (This is both a critique and a technical question.)  I don't know of a way to have the strokes match the sharper points using Photoshop, outside of doing it manually.  Anyone?

Design answer: I've never liked the way they wear those patches in the AHL, so this is a way to have the NHL tie-in without becoming NHL clones. All of the teams will be vastly different than their NHL affiliates.

Personal answer: just an excuse to make more jerseys and work on my skills.

Up next are the Dayton Gems, the IHL affiliate of the Boston Bruins. For this look, I went with a simple geometric logo that is both uncomplicated and modern.

For their uniforms, I decided to go with a modern style with a wordmark like their original uniforms.
