Las Vegas NHL Expansion

If you consider the fact that there is a limousine service in Vegas called "Desert Knights" and they use a Knight chess piece as the logo, it must be silver or gold for the NHL.

That could be a relatively easy fix. The limo service gets a little free advertising, or a contract to provide service to the organization. For something like that, it would be a bad idea for the limo company to pass up on letting the team use the name.

Still, depending on how the company's IP has been set up/protected, they could potentially block it.

The team has commitments (3 years or more) for 16,000 season tickets. Regardless of on-ice performance, and even if the team has some no-shows, they've kind of guaranteed fiscal solvency for at least the next 5 years. If this endeavor does fail, and they certainly have an uphill battle, I don't see a move happening for 15 years, based on their sales and early sponsor info.

Ugh, aside from the location and naming debacle, between the privately funded arena and the financial preparation, this has been a relatively well done process. I have to give them that, at least.

It's a good start...and if Adidas nails the look/logo/colours, the muddled naming process will be quickly forgotten.

While we wait...and wait...and wait...I thought that I'd take a crack at predicting what the uniforms might look like, based on Bill Foley's recent comments, and apparent uni trends from Adidas that we have seen during the WCoH.

Mr Foley has mentioned the following...
-a reference to "Red Rock", hinting at the addition of red to gold, black, and silver
-he's acknowledged the development of a unique sweater material that looks like a steel mesh.
-he's keen on the double-worded "Knights" name, but earlier stated a dislike of "Silver Knights"
-a vision of an "Excalibur"-like sword being pulled from a rock (Red Rock) in an opening ceremony.

From Adidas...
-minimal striping- more like blocks of colour on uniforms
-no waist or pants striping
-colours in logos don't necessarily need to match uniform stripe colours (NA23)
-I'm expecting an inter-twining letter logo. (seems to be popular with Adidas staff)
-high shoulder line with high arm numbers
-straight waist hem

So... I'm expecting that the name will be "Desert Knights". (The "Desert" will be dropped most of the time) Colours will be red, gold, black and silver.
I think we'll see a silver helmet that would be unique in the NHL. In keeping with the recent trend, "BATTLE BORN" (from the state flag) may be embroidered on the inside collar...

Each logo will contain all of the colours. I think we'll get a letter logo, as well as a logo with a reference to the sword-in-the-redstone, to go along with the primary. (I just re-coloured a couple of my previous logos for demonstration purposes). Striping will be minimal, with the predominant sweater colour of silver (the new "steel mesh" material). No red striping but spots of red in the logos on the chest, shoulder and pant leg.

I see you took my "Battle Born" idea. Nice !

These Look fantastic, my only grievance is this is nothing what Bill Foley Described. He said it would be a steel mesh with the red rock color coming through from behind the mesh which this is nothing like that, but still a great concept regardless.

Hi Jet. His words were "...steel mesh with another colour underneath the steel mesh...".

You're right, I think that colour will be the "red rock" he refers to. How much the under colour pokes through remains to be seen. I'm thinking that it will still have a mainly silver look, perhaps like a chain mail. I tied to render a "chain mail" sweater a while back, in an old topic...

Here's the same unis with a different "Silver Knights" logo set...

"Steel mesh with red rock coming through" has the potential to be terrible.  The old Predators mustard alts and the pre-Edge Atlanta baby blue alts tried the looser mesh on top of a solid look, too. The Predators jerseys were more of a yellow up close, but with the blue underneath they looked darker from a distance.  They were also hotter and heavier than other jerseys due to the double layering.

Gray with something like the Diamondbacks' Sedona Red underneath could look like a rosy red or a rust color from a distance depending on the shade of gray on top.

Can they just be called the "Rats" already?

Casino's already refer to people that play slots habitually as Slot Rats and it has a nice tie to the Rat-Pack.

Let it be done.

Thanks Oso. I wonder if there'll be some heraldry-style logos in the package. The "Knights" theme certainly allows for that.

Reporter: Is that a scoop of pudding on the shield?

Foley: No, it's a turd, from the original Belgian, where faux-lee means to crap on good ideas.

If it ends up looking like rust then it might be perfect to be honest. The red rocks in Summerlin that orange-ish red rust color.

I really like the chain mail look. Fits perfectly with the hockey sweater shape/look.

Apparently, the league may open up Vegas to start making deals on June 1st, almost three weeks before their draft.

Desert Knights is...actually fairly alright, I guess.  It's going to get mocked as the Dessert Knights but it's a play on words, isn't as boring as Silver or Golden, and may still hold opportunities for unique branding.

They're just going to end up looking like the Ducks, but whatever.
