MLB Changes 2017

I'm starting to warm up to matte helmets, but if teams like the Rangers (or maybe the Reds) go that route then they gotta do something about the drop shadow. As someone pointed out, it looks awkward as hell.

IIRC, they had to ditch the gigantic baseball since it could have been confused by hitters for a baseball being thrown by a pitcher. It was in a similar enough position to a ball thrown by an RHP, when looking from home plate, that it could've caused issues.

Thank you.  Thank you very much.  That's been an unsolved mystery for me for the last nine years.  I noticed it immediately upon the park's completion, but wasn't a regular in the MLB thread at the time and didn't think until this moment to ask you guys.  XD

The Rays had at least 4 different sock styles today.

Brad Miller wore traditional navy stirrups, Chris Archer wore plain navy Stance socks, Mallex Smith had Stance socks with the normal Rays striping pattern plus the TB logo, and Corey Dickerson had the similar socks with the sunburst logo.

I'm gonna look at the positive here.  I noticed the Stance logo on Aaron Judge's socks as well.  (Side note, glad to see a number in high socks yesterday.  A-Rod may have been a garbage person, but I'll always give him props for wearing his socks high.  Him and Gardner kept it going for years.)  After all the worries about crazy stripe patterns, the team was wearing just simple navy with the logo in white.  And those faux stirrups look great.  Love to see those used a lot across the majors.  The striped ones are pretty good too, although the TB looks a little much.  It would be great, if they could just pick one.

It kinda shows why there are different logos.  Different logos work in different applications.  This is a thicker version of the print logo because a version with the same proportions as the usual one would look extremely slight illegible from far distances.

The print logo is for identification absent of any other context and applications that are larger than those on the uniform (pillars, signs, field).

The colour of the "A's" on the cap is the only difference between that year's set and what they wear now, right?

I hope hope hope that this kicks off a movement for the return of this beautiful uniform.  But on the road I want the 1989-1991 version, after it had matured to grey.

Dee Gordon is wearing some very weird black socks for the Marlins. Black with three orange stripes that progressively get bigger as they go up his calf.

Here they are:

Those Dodgers socks are laughably bad. The others are decent, and there are some repeat designs with the Angels and White Sox sharing the same striping pattern. Cleveland's are nice.

They didn't. Here are some more of the team-specific socks:

I honestly don't think it's possible to not make purple look blue. It's just the lighting that seems to always be the issue.

I did notice a difference by the way, but yeah, it was hardly a difference.

The helmet logo is the print logo.  Its most outstanding (not in a good way) feature is the Y whose bottom doesn't extend to below the bottoms of the legs of the N.  That logo serves no purpose, and looks bad in all applications.

The jersey logo looks best on the helmet, as shown above with the Jackson and Munson pictures.

There was also another helmet logo, characterised by an N whose diagonal stroke had a little curve in it.  The best exemplar of this is the coolest-looking player of all time, the Mighty Mustachioed Mediterranean Marvel himself,  Mr. Richard Aldo Cerone:

And disliking one of the Yankees logos seems dumb to me anyway. They are all almost the same, it's just those slight differences between all of that are awesome.

Yes, I get that the helmet logo was changed a couple years ago to the print logo.  I'm okay with the idea of having multiple versions of the "NY" logo, just not that one particular version.

And wait - why is it dumb to dislike one version of the logo, if that one version is poorly-executed and reflects bad choices?  It's the slight differences that separate the great logos from the awful.  The cap and jersey versions are great, and the print is awful because of all the ways in which it is different.

I was listening to the Mets broadcast at work this afternoon and after discussing the Padres young lineup, the announcers made some negative comments about the Padres not wearing brown.  I just found that interesting as I have long been on the wagon for San Diego bringing back the brown.

Now I am watching the Dodgers-Padres game at home and I can't help but think that San Diego's away uniforms look too similar to those of the Dodgers in the bright SoCal sun.

Curse you.  Curse you to your very heart.  I was excited, but you got me actually thinking reasonably around this.  Why throw back to that?  It is just the same uniform, but with the old cap.  There's also a Jackie Robinson patch if they want to go that far.

However, there was also the old green alt they recently got rid of for a green version of the yellow alt, which specifically at the time bore the sunny elephant.

oakland-athletics-jose-canseco-hit-by-re

And, I've also noticed the presence of another old alt that we haven't seen in years.  Is this a lighting thing, or is this their old black alt?

On the subject of the A's, apparently they made the front page of Wikipedia.  I've never heard this fun fact before.  Is this true?

Meanwhile, I'm more focused on the claim that the Astros are throwing back to 77.  That's a weird year.  They finished 3rd that year, and while it IS the Tequila Sunrise uniforms, it wasn't the first year for them and they wore the exact same thing at home in 1980 when they went to the World Series.  I posit that they're not doing something special themselves  They're wearing them on the road while their opponent celebrates a 40th anniversary of something.  Their home and road were the same that year (although we'll see if MLB allows them to wear white on the road).

That month they're on the road against the Rangers, Royals, Athletics, and Mariners.  Given that the Athletics' throwbacks were mentioned already, I assume not them.  I can't find any specific importance in that year for the Rangers.  The Royals went to the ALCS for the second year, and the Mariners are celebrating their 40th anniversary this year.  So I assume they're going to be wearing Tequila Sunrise on the road against one of these two, if not both...

Given the trident's use in Spring Training and the anniversary, I can see the Mariners regularly trotting out their inaugural uniforms for a dozen or so dates this year.  I'm betting they're wearing the powder blues agains the Astros' white aways one day.  Whatever the outcome, though, I think we win.

For a team with such a rough history, they've got a lot of good looks.  I think they're perfect as is, but one cannot argue that these don't just plain look good.  Whether scarlet or burgundy...  It's like the Pirates vests, the Rangers' red/blue accessories, or the Padres' dozen looks pre-2000.  They'd look great either way, so it's hard to pin down a definitive look.

Never mind that, I feel like people are ignoring the idiocy of the Red Sox wearing navy socks and the White Sox continuing to wear black socks.

Well, it's right next to the black White Sox socks, so...

Nevertheless, I'm assuming these are one option of many and as official as the Marlins' orange cap.

They all suck, except cleveland's. I like those. The cardinals stripes don't look right, and why the hell are the RED SOX' socks freaking blue ?!?!?!? That goes for the White Sox too. I hate the stance socks with a fiery passion.

I tried sleuthing this out the same way I did the Astros, then realized I'm an idiot.  They won the pennant that year.  That being said, if they can get the visiting team to play along, there are a few options of what we can see.  The Pirates could wear the gold alts they already have in rotation, so that would be a great pick.  Otherwise, we may see any of these...
