MLB Changes 2017

I feel like I know the answer to this but would it be possible for MLB to still make and promote the special event caps and sell them to the fans and give some of the proceeds to whatever the charities are just like they are now but NOT make the teams wear them on the field? Because I think the caps are wonderful as fashion caps and it's cool to have a couple for myself and to see people wearing them... I just don't care to see my team wearing it on the field. I also think the caps are improving too as far as looking better than previous years so I'm all for the caps being for the fans and to raise some money because I feel like more and more people will be buying them. But I guess of course the players wearing them is the ultimate in free advertising and is what probably leads to the most sales of the caps. Basically the players wearing those caps makes that the equivalent of the players now wearing ads. The entire weekend every team was wearing a free advertisement for the memorial day caps.

New Era pays a pretty nickel to MLB (the MLB/Baseball/the Majors/The Show) to be the exclusive on-field hat manufacturer.  Not sure it's really "free advertising".

My bet is with costs of on-field hats increasing, the impulsive buyers are thinning out.  Most people who buy specialty on-fields are collectors and fans who like the design (or have ties to the military or cause).

Smart is believing half of what you hear. Genius is knowing which half.

This season the design for Memorial Day cap is awesome, one of the best since 2015. But the fact that is made in China makes me not buy it at retail price. Once they hit clearance I'll grab it for $10 or at Ross

I picked up one of the 4th of July caps yesterday because I had an item I needed to exchange (it was past the refund date). It's China made which is never great, but I actually really like it. The SE caps they did this season are the best ones they've put out in YEARS. Even the fit is pretty good for a Chino.

I thought the Memorial Day uniforms were well done for the most part. I wouldn't mind owing one of hats.

Well a silver lining was all the white vs. gray matchups.

Overall, though I thought they were kinda drab...which beats the hell out of overdone and star-spangled, I guess.  But my real beef is with the whole idea and making it three days.

The Mariners are throwing back to their inaugural season (1977) on June 24th to further celebrate their 40th anniversary. They're hosting the Astros that night, so here's what the two teams will be wearing:IMG_4652.thumb.JPG.ee027a34966278ad4ff8f86ed8f43c2f.JPG

The A's are doing a early 2000 themed day for July 1 (with a Tejada and Zito bobblehead). Watching the broadcast last night, I heard broadcasters say that the team will wear their black jerseys from that time.

That's both horrible and great. Horrible that we have to see those ugly jerseys again but kinda awesome as a one time throwback to an ugly jersey almost like purposely saying "look at this garbage, can you believe we actually wore these things?"

That is a great throwback matchup that never happened!

To no one's surprise, I'm generally not a fan of the late 70s-early 80s baseball aesthetic - pullovers and sansabelts do not belong anywhere near a baseball field, and I find most powder blue uniforms utterly objectionable to look at.

However, that Mariners jersey is an absolute beauty, and is probably the best pullover jersey in Major League history. I think part of it is that, like the Jays' original duds, they weren't trying to shoehorn an older identity onto a 70's pullover template. The wordmark, logo, and colors all fit a late 70's uniform perfectly, while not straying from the well-established baseball aesthetic of an arched wordmark and front number on the lower left.

I am with you.  Sansabelts and pullovers are terrible.

I don't know about the "best pullover jersey in Major League history" but it is nice.  I know the current look is how the team is recognized and it's a nice enough look, but I wish the Mariners would have kept this basic look...it would have been great to see evolve into the late 1980s / early 1990s when uniforms were becoming more traditional again.

I was actually just thinking that myself - I'd really like to see how that jersey would look on a modern template, with a button down jersey and sleeve piping. I tend to think it would look very good.

I generally like the Mariners' overall current identity, but I think this could've wound up evolving into a great identity. I wish we got to see how it would've looked (and evolved) had the Mariners kept this basic template.

I'll go with the 1980s home Brewers as favorite pullover.  I don't love the BiG, but that was a sharp jersey.

I'm really not a fan of pullovers at all, but I will admit that the inaugural Mariners set was fantastic as far as the concept was concerned. I don't know that I have a favorite pullover, but that one comes close. 70's Twins as well.
