True, but it's looking as though Newport in northern Kentucky is their preferred spot.

They also haven't revealed how much public money they're looking for.  They've been touting their $250M "investment" in Cincinnati, but are apparently including the $150M expansion in that number.  Which really ought to be a deal-breaker.

To that point. If its an investment in Cincinnati then the stadium needs to be in Cincinnati, OH and not on Newport, KY.

After Paul Brown Stadium I have huge doubts about this city ever giving public dollars to a sports facility again. That's gotta be why they're exploring Newport, KY* at all.

*for those that don't know Cincinnati, Newport is directly across the river from downtown. As the crow flies the stadium would be as close if not closer to the center of downtown Cincinnati as the OTR site and much closer than the Oakley site. It's a fine location, but people really get hung up on teams playing in states different from their namesake (See: Giants, Jets, New York).

I saw this as well. Just about to post it. They mentioned possible sites in Over The Rhine (just Northwest of Downtown Cincy), Oakley (just Northeast of Downtown Cincy) and Newport, KY (just across the river from Downtown Cincy). Pretty ambitious.

My preference is OTR, then Oakley, then Newport. OTR would be great because the area has become the coolest part of the city and then the streetcar becomes useful for Banks parking rather than a glorified carnival ride. From a gameday experience standpoint it'd be the best location too. The marches to the match would rival any other supporters group in MLS.

It's all hinges on getting a bid to the MLS and where they're getting the money from. If they don't get the bid these renderings will go in the "Unrealized Stadium Concepts" thread. There's no way they're going to build a 200 million dollar SSS for a USL team. My prediction is that despite the strong support Cincinnati has given this team the MLS will decide it's just not large enough a market, especially when compared to some other candidates, to necessitate a team.

As far as the renderings go, it's a little too modern for my tastes, but looks really cool. I don't think that design would fit well in OTR. The worst part about the dumb casino is that it sticks out like a big stupid sore thumb and that stadium would do the same in Over the Rhine. I want brick!

Kentucky has a long history of stupidly giving out public money.  But if they're asking for it, I hope their bid doesn't win.  There are plenty of potential ownership groups who are willing to pay for their own teams instead of asking taxpayers to subsidize them.

As for Charlotte, Mecklenburg County, who approved to their share of the project, has deferred to place money into a capital budget until August as they await the city's next move.

And as for Sunday's USMNT overnight ratings, Univision had 4.5M viewers and FS1 has 2.3M. NBC had just over 7M for Game 6.

Atlanta United plays their first tournament game tomorrow.  Now my logic says this will be a good opportunity to get the backup goalkeeper some work, the reserves some game action, rest some guys, and get some previously injured guys (namely Josef Martinez) back into game form.  Charleston is going to be all-in against the big leagues.

Me too, except the part where Seattle had to play Portland in early rounds again. The Sounders B-side won, but could we have played some beer league team?

FC Cincinnati just beat the Columbus Crew. Tell me what that means. Thanks.

It means that MLS clubs don't always take the Cup as seriously as lower-level clubs do, resting their starters so as not to drop league points.

Or maybe it means that Cincy was just better tonight.

Either way, Cincy will advance in the tournament and Columbus is out.

Either way, Cincinnati showed up. That crowd was 95% Cincy fans. 30,000 people. That's a big-time showing because there are other markets bidding for MLS entry who are playing MLS sides at home and not drawing nearly as many. North Carolina FC hosted Houston Dynamo tonight and I'd be surprised if they had 4,000 people. They are bidding for MLS.

I believe Cincinnati sealed itself as one of the two teams to get the expansion nod. That rivalry with Columbus could become something else.

Also, Atlanta is down 1-0 after waiting for 2.5 hours following a severe weather delay.

A few fun facts: the match is at Kennesaw State.

Charleston, the team winning, is actually Atlanta's USL affiliate. They've played in an Open Cup final before.

Pretty solid showing this round for 2nd tier pro soccer in the US Open Cup. Miami crushed Orlando, Cincinnati beat Colombus, and some team from Sacramento is bending Real Salt Lake over and giving them the absolute business ?

As an avid hater of RSL, this brings me much joy.

Suck it, Charleston.

I just got home a few minutes ago.  That lightning storm was something else.  Definitely wasn't expecting to do a kickoff on West Coast time.

I've heard that MLS teams typically don't play their US Open Cup games at their home stadium, but at a smaller stadium that's in town.

Thats true, at least for early rounds.  Open Cup games tend to draw smaller crowds than league games, so clubs cap costs.  In return, some clubs give away tickets to season ticket holders or sell them at reduced prices.

The NY/NYC match last night was at Red Bull Arena, but attendance was awful. In no small part because the Red Bulls were charging up to $65 a ticket.
