SCROLL DOWN SLIGHTLY FOR TEMPLATE LIST

Dear members of CCSLC,

Hi. I am here to make a request to the esteemed members of CCSLC. It is a simple request, and will help people(at least me) out. I find many times that when a new template, logo, uniform, etc. (especially template) is made and posted, and I want to try it out, it is posted in .AI format. No I am not a professional, so I cannot afford Illustrator, so I use Inkscape. However, I would love to be able to view these documents, and finding out that they are in .ai can be very disappointing. therefore, all I am asking is that if you use AI and are about to save your work in .AI format, please think twice and save in .SVG format so it is universally viewable and editable, most importantly in the free program Inkscape. As far as I know Illustrator can save in .SVG format, and there are no advantages to .AI over .SVG besides that it is Illustrator's default format(correct me if I'm wrong). Or even save as both if possible. I hope that this request will be taken kindly, because that's what it is, and that it helps out CCSLC as a whole. Thank you.

Regards,

Your fellow Earthling,

gingerbreadmann

EDIT: I was thinking that maybe we could get maybe a SVG template library going? If there are any of you with Illustrator that want to convert any .AI's from the Templates thread AND the Templates requests thread or if you have any really good templates in .ai, what would be awesome. If you were going to do this, I would ask that you use Mediafire.com to host the files, even over your own sites because there is no expiration dates on Mediafire(and you never know when a site might go away), and it will keep it uniform. So if anyone would be interested to help out here, as you can see we have some support, please post to signify your interest. You don't have to convert anything yet, but if you really want to then please use Mediafire for now until this gets organized. Thanks to anyone willing to help out.

GBM

(P.S. I have a SVG Revolution Helmet Template that I will probably put up, so that would be a start)

Question, will all SVG files exported from Illustrator actually open in programs like Inkscape? I don't actually have it since I have Illustrator, however I have encountered problem opening SVG files in CS2 that were created in CS3.

To give you an example the following file was exported from Illustrator CS3:

Edge.png

The SVG file can be downloaded here:

Edge Template SVG File (zip)

Can someone confirm that the file is both useable and has the proper structure with layers etc?

Much obliged.

The file will NOT open in Illustrator CS2. It's weird, too. It doesn't even say anything I'd expect like, "This file cannot be opened because it was created in a newer version of Illustrator da dada da da." It just doesn't do anything at all when I try to open it. Looks like .svg isn't your end all/be all universal vector format, folks. It's a crappy format with crappy export capabilities. The headaches that come from playing with .svgs probably hurt a lot more than saving up $300 for Illustrator.

I still don't have a website, but I have a dribbble now! http://dribbble.com/andyharry

It won't open in AI CS2 because it was created in AI CS3, I found that out today. There is a section of code in the actual file (if you open it in a text editor you will find it labeled ForeignObject I think) removing everything in that tag will let you open it in CS2....however...

To make things easier I decided to post all of the templates from HockeyWidgets.com (my site) in all three versions of AI, PSD, and SVG.

All 7 jersey styles can be found here for those who have contacted me about them:

THANK YOU. I love that site and I have emailed you a few times about it. I'm so glad this is having an impact, especially on such a great site.

Thanks again, hopefully this will become a trend!

Not a problem, I hope that the templates work out for people who don't have access to Adobe's stuff. I know what it's like trying to work around not having Illustrator and Photoshop. (And how expensive they are...)

I'd be interested in knowing whether or not the actual layers work out OK with SVG, otherwise I may have to install X11 and get Inkscape and readjust things.

Wouldn't it be easier to save it in .eps format?

[Croatia National Team Manager Slavan] Bilic then went on to explain how Croatia's success can partially be put down to his progressive man-management techniques. "Sometimes I lie in the bed with my players. I go to the room of Vedran Corluka and Luka Modric when I see they have a problem and I lie in bed with them and we talk for 10 minutes." Maybe Capello could try getting through to his players this way too? Although how far he'd get with Joe Cole jumping up and down on the mattress and Rooney demanding to be read his favourite page from The Very Hungry Caterpillar is open to question. --The Guardian's Fiver, 08 September 2008
