upperV03 Posted June 1, 2017 Author Share Posted June 1, 2017 A good amount of midweek action to report on this week, with the two Canadian Championship semifinal second leg matches, as well as four league games. Let's take a look at the Canadian Championship matches first. Montreal vs. Vancouver: Keeper kits: light blue (Montreal) vs. red (Vancouver) Refs: yellow Toronto vs. Ottawa: Keeper kits: light blue (Toronto) vs. black (Ottawa) Refs: yellow Montreal/Vancouver featured the same kit matchup as the first leg match last week, as well as when they squared off in league play earlier in the season. It looked just as good the third time around, and the keeper and ref kits provided nice splashes of color. Toronto vs. Ottawa again looked somewhat like an intrasquad scrimmage, especially with both teams having dark sleeves and gradient socks. It wasn't necessarily a bad looking matchup, just not all that exciting. Now let's take a look at the four league games that occurred. Columbus vs. Seattle: Keeper kits: green (Columbus) vs. red (Seattle) Refs: light blue NYCFC vs. New England: Keeper kits: black (NYCFC) vs. green (New England) Refs: yellow Orlando vs. DCU: Keeper kits: black (Orlando) vs. green (DCU) Refs: yellow Houston vs. RSL: Keeper kits: green (Houston) vs. black (RSL) Refs: yellow As @Gothamite and @Digby both already mentioned, NYCFC/New England was definitely a good looking matchup. It also offered somewhat of a preview for what this season's Hudson River Derby matches should look like (except NYRB obviously don't have the halved shirts). Other than that, I can't say I was a huge fan of the other three matchups, and it was dissapointing to see all the monochrome white. DCU didn't have a choice, and RSL didn't really either, but Seattle could've easily decided against wearing their white secondaries. If there was a game to wear their third kits, this would've been it. There was sufficient contrast between the two kits already, but Seattle's navy and light blue (cyan) third kit would've looked much better against Columbus' yellow IMO. Also, with regards to RSL, some navy shorts (with yellow stripes) would do their away kit wonders, and would've made the matchup against Houston significantly more attractive. If I was in charge of such things, they'd return to navy shorts with their primary kit, and they'd use them with the away kit as well, especially when going up against a team with white shorts. And technically all eight of Saturday's games featured at least one white kit element since New England and Colorado both have white shorts for their primaries. From Friday and Saturday's games, the only one I'd say was a subpar kit matchup was FCD/RSL just because of how bland and uninspired RSL's secondary is, and because FCD's current primary doesn't look quite as good when it's paired with red shorts (though I appreciate that they wear them against teams with white or light colored shorts). From those same games, I'd say Colorado/Columbus was my favorite, with Montreal/NYRB not too far behind. The others all looked fairly nice and/or inoffensive as well. I will say I was a bit surprised to see NYCFC in the navy shorts against Philly in their secondaries, and I probably would've preferred a repeat of the kit matchup from the first time the two clubs played eachother this season. Also, I'm definitely glad that both SKC and Minnesota elected to wear their secondaries since any other kit matchup in that game would've been problematic. And SKC already wears their secondaries at home a few times a season so it's not a huge deal for them to have to change when they're the home team. As far as Sunday's two games go, it was nice to see two color on color matchups after all the white on Friday and Saturday. Having said that, I'm not sure why Houston elected to go with their secondaries since their primaries contrast just fine with Seattle's green and blue, and they already had that same matchup earlier in the season (aside from Seattle's shorts and socks being swapped). I actually thought it was still a pretty nice looking matchup though, so I didn't really mind Houston being in black instead of orange. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I somewhat understand why they didn't wear their red shorts against Chicago's all red kit. Just think they coulda/shoulda wore their primary black shorts with the gray jerseys and socks instead. That would look horrible IMO since black and gold don't appear at all in their secondary kit. I agree that the white shorts aren't nearly as good as the red, and really I think the second shorts option should be light gray instead of white, but wearing the black shorts from the home kit would create a terribly mismatched uniform as a whole. I just really loved the balance between the two kits, with SKC's light blue/white/light blue against Montreal's royal/black/royal. Aside from that, I thought Portland/Dallas was fairly nice, and I assume the reason Dallas didn't wear their primaries was to avoid the green/red colorblind issue that usually plagues that matchup, including earlier this season in Dallas (though the league doesn't usually seem to care all that much about that). One interesting thing from that matchup is that Dallas wore white shorts with their new secondary for the first time. I'm conflicted on the white shorts; on one hand they made the gradient on the shirt appear more free-flowing, but the overall balance of the kit felt off without the blue shorts. Regardless, I at least liked the color matchup between the Timbers' green and gold and Dallas' blue and white. Lastly, Chicago/Atlanta was another matchup that could easily have been mistaken for an instrasquad scrimmage if someone didn't know any better. DCU vs. Christos FC: Keeper kits: light blue (DCU) vs. yellow (Christos) Refs: red Colorado vs. OKC: Keeper kits: black (Colorado) vs. tan (OKC) Refs: yellow Seattle vs. Portland: Keeper kits: light blue (Seattle) vs. green (Portland) Refs: yellow Lime green was the theme yesterday, with Christos and OKC both sporting it in some capacity. Oddly enough, the Sounders, who are obviously famous for their lime (they call it "rave") green kits, opted to wear their secondaries to prevent what would've been a lime green trifecta. For whatever reason the Sounders have had a tendency to wear their secondary or third kits when playing at Starfire in recent seasons, so I wasn't necessarily surprised when they trotted out in white. In fact, I was actually kind of glad because it created a different kit matchup from the one we had just a few weeks ago. It was a pretty nice looking game, and I'm excited for when the two clubs square off in Portland in a few weeks time because we should get the Timbers in their green and gold primaries against the Sounders in their secondaries, creating somewhat of a retro looking matchup. Aside from that game, I thought Colorado/OKC had a nice contrast of colors, while the kit matchup in DCU/Christos wasn't nearly as memorable as the game itself due to the amateur side's basic kits (though I suppose that just added to the uniqueness of an amateur team making it far enough to square off against an MLS opponent). But anyways, tonight's games should bring some interesting looking matchups, so I'm looking forward to seeing it all and then recapping it here tomorrow. I absolutely loved how Cincinnati/Columbus looked, and I was really surprised to see the Crew come out in yellow/black/yellow. I'm not sure why they elected to go with black shorts but it's a really terrific look for them and just added to the intrigue of that matchup. I hope to see the Crew in that look more often, and I actually wouldn't be opposed to them trying black/yellow/black as well. Aside from that, I also really liked how the other aforementioned matchups looked. Orlando/Miami was extremely bright and colorful, while Atlanta/Charleston and St. Louis/Chicago were both a bit more restrained. I'm pretty sure Charleston has a white third kit so I'm not sure why Atlanta wore their secondaries, but it actually made for a more colorful and visually interesting matchup. Yesterday also saw the first Hudson River Derby of the season, and I'm gonna go out on a limb and say it was the best looking edition of the rivalry yet. It's a shame the Red Bulls' new primary doesn't have the red sleeves that their last one had because that would've made the matchup even more appealing. From that same game, it was interesting that both the refs and NYCFC's keepers were in green. Seems like that should've been avoided. Anyways, the last thing I'll point out is that there were a couple of matchups that could've easily been mistaken for regular MLS clashes. North Carolina/Houston looked a lot like Philadelphia/Houston, and LA/Orange County looked eerily similar to LA/DCU. Not that it really matters, just thought it was interesting. And then you have the Red Bulls' primary which is a mix between the two. Monochrome in general was actually somewhat of a theme for the weekend's games since every game except for NYCFC/Seattle featured at least one team in a mono-colored kit, and six of the matchups featured both teams in them. Of the five games that didn't feature both teams in mono-colored kits, I'd have to say Atlanta/Columbus, Colorado/Portland, and NYCFC/Seattle (in that order) were my favorites, mainly due to the unique color matchups. NYCFC/Seattle would've been a more balanced and appealing matchup had Seattle been in their standard blue shorts and green socks, but they almost always refrain from wearing that combo on the road. I expected the Timbers to wear their secondaries, but I was surprised to see the Loons do the same since they were at home and had yet to do that before Wednesday night. Had Minnesota worn their primaries it would've been a more appealing matchup overall. And Colorado/LA would've been a more appealing matchup had the Galaxy worn the navy shorts from their secondaries to break up all that white. They've done that a couple times in Colorado in the past, including last season, so I was disappointed they didn't do it again this time around. Other than those two games, I thought Montreal/Toronto looked really nice, and Seattle/Orlando wasn't far behind. DCU/Atlanta wasn't bad, it just wasn't really all that noteworthy. I find that awkward because A.) MLS wasn't even around then, B.) there are indeed Canadian clubs in MLS and just throwing maple leaves on the pattern is bizarre, and C.) while WC94 did have games at Soldier Field, I don't even think the USA played in any of them. So basically this feels more like a retro reference as meme, rather than meaningful tribute. In a vacuum it does look pretty good though (and seems somewhat inevitable given Adidas's new obsession with faux heather printing.) It's almost unfair how nearly all US cities lack strong municipal iconography, and then Chicago has a surplus of it. But also not surprising from what's arguably the most architecturally distinguished city in the country.
