B-Rich Posted January 16, 2017 Share Posted January 16, 2017 Thoughts on the move and branding... First of all, the move of this (or any) NFL team to Las Vegas to me just seems/feels wrong. I get that it is a growing area, burgeoning metropolis, yada yada, but for goodness sake they were JUST awarded an NHL hockey team and became a "major league city". Charlotte was the big up-and coming metro area in the late 1980s, was awarded the Hornets in 1987 (who began play in 1988). After the NFL saw their success at the gate and among fans, they couldn't wait to get in there, awarding the Panthers franchise in 1993 to begin play in 1995. At least there was a "gap" in between. The current situation seems to be Las Vegas entering the big time all at once... probably not so good for the NHL either-- NFL stealing their thunder and all. To me the Raiders should be in California, where they have spent the last 56 years. Either Oakland or LA, either one is good. But another thing that slightly bugs me is the Raider's nautical pirate imagery being shipped off to the desert. It worked great in Oakland, which is on San Francisco Bay, and to some degree Los Angeles, which is on the Pacific Ocean. The California coast even has a brief history of its own pirates/raiders and even had noted corsair/privateer Sir Francis Drake land there. So in my mind, it fits, just like Buccaneers fits in perfectly with Tampa Bay (and had fit in perfectly with New Orleans in the ABA). Now, the name "Raider" can have just about anything to interpret it and have just about anything visually attached to it-- a pirate, a Viking, a cavalry raider on horseback, a knight, an Indian warrior, or even Texas Tech's weird looking Zorro character (that always seemed stupid to me; he's a Red Raider, yet he-- and Texas Tech half of the time-- is always dressed primarily in BLACK). But the NFL Raiders have a now-iconic image of what is obviously a pirate, with an eye-patch and crossed pirate swords. They'll never change that. To me, that doesn't translate to the casinos and desert of Las Vegas. Now, some of you may say, "well, what about the Pittsburgh Pirates-- they are nowhere near the sea coast". We all know that nickname came up YEARS ago organically as an insult-- the club was accused of "pirating" a player by the then-Philadelphia Athletics. The Pittsburgh team kind of liked the nickname which was eventually adopted as Pittsburgh's official team nickname. I guess if it comes to it, I can try and convince myself that the logo icon is now a rugged desert cavalry raider who lost an eye in battle many years ago. And for some reason, like his pirate predecessor, he's wearing a football helmet. It is what it is. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

The "Raiders" brand is not intimately tied to Oakland just as it wasn't tied to Los Angeles before it or Oakland before that. If they did want to change something though I wouldn't mind seeing an accent of gold added to the majority silver/black. Aside from neon, my mind's eye sees LV colors as black, gold, silver. While aesthetically that's not a terrible idea. I just don't see them doing it. But that would require New Orleans to make their secondary color white instead of black, and their tertiary color black, in my version of the NFL. You have a better chance of getting hit by a meteor then seeing anything ever change with the Oakland/Los Angelas/Oakland/Las Vegas Raiduzz and their "look". Not that they really need to but they are stuck with the past, whether good or bad. Remember these are the Davis's we are talking about. Total clowns running a franchise. I always thought that it was a city in the middle of a desert and mostly made up of tourists. First, from a football point of view, I always thought they were afraid to have a team in Vegas because of sports betting and second, I can think of 4 or 5 other cities that hockey would flourish in. crosfam Posted January 16, 2017 Share Posted January 16, 2017 A very Unique business model - with vacation packages for fans (often the visiting team) to have a Vegas weekend with game tickets. Casino owned luxury boxes for high rollers. This will supplement a local fan base. The Raiders are enough of a national brand that no uni changes are needed (or wanted) at all. I think an alt look with silver numbers is a fine 3rd jersey. I would like to see it paired with alternate white pants with black and silver trim. And most fans that understand that, know that the Raiders moving from LA back to Oakland wasn't a good idea. The NFL was against it, but Davis was using it as leverage to get a new venue in LA, and though Oakland would bend over backwards once he returned. They didn't. And the fanbase in Oakland just isn't strong enough. But, the Chargers move was like the Browns or Oilers moving. Or the Rams moving from LA to STL. It's 'only about money' in the worst way. You can feel bad for St. Louis fans (and I do), but even the Rams 'stole' the team from LA. If the Ravens moved to San Antonio ten years from now, nobody would REALLY feel that bad about Baltimore fans getting shafted after the moral gymnastics needed to excuse rooting for the displaced Browns franchise. If any league could "work" in Las Vegas, it'd be the NFL, since its business model is predicated on every game being an "event". Now hockey? ROFLMAO. Pauly Posted January 17, 2017 Share Posted January 17, 2017 Best option for Mark Davis was to suck up his pride and work out a deal to stay in the bay area by being a tenant in Santa Clara with the 49ers.Moving to Vegas means a relocation fee to the NFL and while the Raiders have a great brand which needs no rebrand the Raiders aren't exactly flush with cash. BBTV Posted January 17, 2017 Share Posted January 17, 2017 It will work in Las Vegas despite the market size and the fact that a sizeable portion of those 2M metro-residents are not in the financial class that can afford NFL gamedays. It's just a shame that such an important team is essentially going to be playing road games every week, even when at home. The halftime shows will be great though!
