Playing great in Europe really isn't saying much, especially when he went from being pretty awful in the NBA to instantly playing good in turkey for only 2 years.

Right, which is why I'm hesitant to be totally on board. But I do hope he contributes and the signing is worth it.

I have to find silver linings somewhere right now! :P

What? The NBA guarantees contracts. It provides the best opportunity for players to find endorsements. It's by far the most socially progressive league (as socially progressive a pro sports league can be.)

The NFL is murdering its players. The NCAA is exploiting its players. MLB has dumb unwritten rules.

The NBA isn't perfect, but "the worst" is the the worst opinion.

I'm talking from a CBA / ability to build a team perspective.  You're going to tell me that they have a great CBA, when teams were trading for Jamal Mashburn despite him never being able to play again?  When expiring contracts are worth more than the humans attached to them?  When there's a million goofy loopholes to sign players and legally circumvent the cap?

I'm pro player, so hey I'm glad they're getting all they can, even if philosophically it sickens me that pro sports in general generates what it does, but cities have generations of fans that haven't seen winning basketball.

I think we look at the league and the success of the teams from a club perspective.  "Well, the sixers are run by idiots so they don't deserve to win".  Don't fans deserve to at least occasionally get to have fun watching winning basketball?  They shouldn't be punished because their team's GM isn't the best in the world, or they didn't draft a superstar in the middle of the first round when teams usually draft guys from the former yugoslavia who may never even cross the ocean, or because their team is forced to spend years acquiring expiring contracts and paying idiots big bucks just because they have to just to have a shot at signing a good player in three years.

I like rules that allow teams to keep their great players once they get them, and I like giving them more money to spend rather than something like a "franchise tag", which usually hurts the player.  But dammit it's the fans that suffer for all this nonsense, and rail on the Sixers carpetbagger owner (who owns the Devils too) all you want (it's certainly fair), but the system should be as such that all fans get to have fun, even if not every year.

"Mid-level exception".  "Bird rights".  "Super max".  "Early Bird Exception".  Give me a Fing break.

At the very least, institute some rule that would essentially act liek a minimum age rule, so like 3-years post high-school graduation, so at least you're drafting physically mature players and have a better sense for how they'll develop, and also make it so that if a foreign player wants to be drafted, he has to declare and be committed to playing in the states THAT YEAR.  This drafting of guys in the first round knowing that they may never play for you is stupid.

I knew I would get this comment but in 2017 I'll take what I can get.

Yes, 2017, a year of corporate behemoths co-opting social justice gestures for profit. A kid splits a package of Reese's Peanut Butter Cups between his two gay dads as the v/o says "there really is no wrong way to eat a Reese's." Everything's okay now.

Well no, everything is not okay. That's the point. Cynicism isn't working either.

Here, I'm going to tell you a secret.  The only difference between Philadelphia and Boston is that the Celtics have an organizational culture that values winning and the Sixers don't.  Here's hoping somebody offers Simmons or Embiid a stupid poison pill contract in their first RFA year and blows up the Process dead in its tracks.

No, the only difference is that Billy King was dumb enough to let the Celtics outsource their tanking to Brooklyn instead of doing it themselves.

Durant to the Warriors was a glitch in the system. And Durant taking significantly less to re-sign in Golden State is another glitch. But even with that, Houston might end up CP3, Harden and Melo. OKC is better in 2017 than they were last year. Boston is stacked. Cleveland still has LeBron. San Antonio is San Antonio.

And still none of them will have a chance against the Warriors. The salary cap boom is over, and there's no one available in the forseeable future that will move the needle for any other team. So yeah, I'd say there's an existential problem there.

The same way you sell the NFL product to the fans of historically :censored: fire franchises.  The same way you sell the MLB product to the historically moribund and butt lost.  This isn't a uniquely NBA problem (nor is the Hawks being unable to keep :censored: together two years removed from a season that was truly greater than the sum of their constituent parts.)

EDIT:  No, seriously your complaining seems to be along the lines of "Atlanta should have been insulated from the consequences of choosing Dwight Howard over Al Horford or trading Jeff Teague and Kyle Korver" and no, that's entirely on the Hawks.

So, bottom line....you aren't able to sell the 2017-18 NBA product to me from any angle, correct?  I see a lot of words but an inability to, well, answer the question directly...which is your general M.O.

Not really sure why the Hawks were brought up, other than you don't really know how to answer a simple question.  While it's nice to see the local team do well, they are the team I pay attention to the least.  They sunk themselves when they decided to let go of Ferry and had the relatively inexperienced head coach take on a second role as GM.

Just going over what NBA fans and media are saying, there's more excitement over where LeBron and Greek Freak may end up 12 months from now than about the 82 game season and 2 months of playoffs before that.  You're supposed to be enjoying the on-court product a lot more than the speculation of future roster moves.

Tell me how it's a good thing that there's only 2 serious championship contenders, 4 that might be able to sneak in should something horrific happen to one of the 2 serious contenders, and 24 teams that just get a certificate of participation.

Why is it so hard to admit that the current NBA product stinks?

I think we've learned that the most important thing NBA teams can do is draft well, nurture young talent, and lock them into deals as early as they can.

No, the most important thing NBA teams can do...if their goal is to win a championship....is acquire a player that's either a superstar or a once-a-generation player, team them up with a couple of other stars, and hope your stars out-perform the other superteams.

If your goal is to just win a round or two in the playoffs, then drafting well and nurturing talent is more that style.

Apparently the Pacers offered Paul George for Klay and the Warriors said no.

Klay is a better fit for the Warriors team, so that makes sense, but it also shows the Pacers are nuts.

If that's a move they would have considered, Kevin Love would have been a better trade. He can't shoot as well, but he can pass and rebound. (Though I bet the Cavs would take Klay for Love straight up.)

Klay for Love was a trade the Warriors actually rejected...in the summer of 2014.

So I have no idea what the Raptors are doing......

1. We trade away Carroll along with a 1st & 2nd in a salary dump move, only to waive the player we got back (Justin Hamilton).

2. We trade away Cory Joseph for nothing & sign C.J. Miles. This deal was originally a Sign & Trade, now it isn't.... meaning we no longer have the MLE we had to sign another player because we used it on him.

So we traded away a guy that was crippling us cap wise only to have anywhere from 3 to 4 million under the hard cap to spend on another guy if we do trade for someone else. So yeah. How is this helping us out cap wise?
