Seattle NHL Brand Discussion

If red and black are the primary colors for this Seattle team, it's obvious what the nickname will be...

Lol OITGDNHL would they basically assure their brand new team sits bottom of the interest barrell by going with red and black, which is associated MUCH more with Seattle’s primary rival city of Portland.

This league is so dumb.

Blazers are red and black

Cougars are red and silver

49ers are red and gold

The Mariners don't really have rivals because they stink, but the Angels are red and red

Red is not a color for Seattle sports. I can't imagine it will stand.

Red and black could simply be the colours the group chose for all the promo material and not the actual team colours.  I doubt they have gotten that far just yet, especially since the name could potential influence the colours.  However, I could see why they might want to go with red and black, to not only stick out among the other pro teams in Seattle, but the Canucks as well.  That being said, it would be pretty stupid to come out with something looking like the New Jersey Devils.

I'd be really disappointed if they went with a red and black color scheme as the avenue for a mainly green team is wide open.

The Stars and Wild would kinda disagree...

These are the 13 names the Oak View Group have registered:

Rainiers, Kraken, Evergreens, Seals, Emeralds, Sea Lions, Sockeyes, Whales, Eagles, Totems, Cougars, Firebirds, Renegades

A Seattle Times poll had Sockeyes on top, with a total of 164,144 votes casted.  Totems and Metros were next.

I think red is a good choice to include in the colour scheme and even as the primary colour. But they need green as at least the secondary colour. Some variant of red seems almost necessary with the most likely of names such as Sockeyes, Totems, and Mets.

As mentioned before, they would stand out among the rest of Seattle's teams by being the only ones to have red. A darker shade would be preferable.

i admit Kraken would be unique, but to me it just feels so minor league.

It’s suit the NHL perfectly then!

Green, red, white, and black would have been nice, but the Wild are kind of reclaiming red after faking out just being a green and beige team (at least whenever they played the Blackhawks).

I’m gonna say it again, anything other than green and gold will be a big disappointment to me. It looks good, It fits Seattle, nobody wears it now that the stars have rebranded, it’s unique within the current Seattle sports landscape, and they can do up the arena in those colours to tie in with the sonics, who they are obviously hoping will return soon. It’s a perfect opportunity that they’ll probably waste.

Seals, Sea Lions and Kraken just feel too much like AAA Minor League Baseball to me.  Eagles is a nice nod to the Seahawks, but at the same time it makes you think NFL and, well, Philly.  And Cougars seems a bit odd with both the Preds and Panthers already using big cat imagery.

I think I like Emeralds the best.

Side note - the local MiLB team here in Eugene is the Ems and they have some cool sasquatch / bigfoot branding to go with that name.
