I had a "concept" a few years ago of standardized NCAA team abbreviations as a way to avoid that. It wasn't perfect, but it was... something, for sure. Football was a perrinal loser back then (9 wins in previous four seasons). Today, they've got a $132M budget, which is a 30% increase from 2010-11. The fact that two Northwoods League clubs already play in Southeast Wisconsin and now the American Association is coming to Milwaukee County is proof enough that there's a market in the Milwaukee area for lower levels, but still highly competitive baseball. The Panthers don't draw partially because it's still practically winter in the northern states when the college baseball season begins, but mostly because the UWM athletic department is too unstable and incompetent to market anything. Either way, I would imagine being able to offer the Miller Park experience at a significantly lower cost could easily satiate a niche we already know exists. Previously located in San Antonio, Texas, the team will operate in a new downtown Amarillo, Texas ballpark beginning next April. The Padres' PDC with the yet-to-be-named Amarillo club is set to run through the 2020 Texas League season. The Normal ownership specifically cited the desire to move to a business model where they do not have to pay their players. The Frontier League now stands at 10 teams. The Baby Cakes open the 2019 season TONIGHT, and I have not seen ONE WORD of advertising or anything about it, NOT ONE. No radio ads, no TV ads, no billboards, nada. About the only thing out there is their Facebook page. Looks like franchise owner, Lou Schwechheimer, is cutting his advertising budget in preparation for the move to Wichita. He's already made the money he's going to make with new name merch sales; next year or the year afterwards (they are contractually obligated to play here next season) he gets to do it all over again. According to a statement made by GM Cookie Rojas at the last Louisiana Stadium and Exposition District board meeting, the Baby Cakes averaged about 3,500 actual attendance/5,000 paid attendance last year, which jibes with the 3,837 average figure put out by Baseball America. This put them in 29th place put of 30 AAA teams in terms of attendance, ahead of the Gwinnett Stripers. And as Baseball America pointed out: "The biggest drop, however, belonged to the New Orleans Baby Cakes, who lost 97,269 overall and dropped their average attendance by 1,727 fans per game. This was despite losing (by rainout) four fewer games in 2018 than they did in 2017. Using their average attendance of 3,827 from this year, those four rainouts cost New Orleans 15,308 fans, which still leaves a drop of roughly 82,000 fans for the season. Part of this is certainly attributable to the sheen wearing off of the Baby Cakes name, which is in its second year." Also, it's not looking good for a quick turnaround for baseball at the AA level. There had been talk of moving a Southern League AA franchise to take the place of the Baby Cakes. But in February, the president of the AA Southern League said New Orleans is outside of the league's "footprint", (even though franchises currently exist in Jackson, Biloxi, Mobile, and Pensacola). Members of the Louisiana Stadium and Exposition District said that the commission had spoken to NOLA Gold rugby and several soccer minor leagues about locating a team at Zephyr Field. Something else must be going on that they just don't want to say or they just don't want to relocate an existing Southern League team. Also the San Antonio Missions make their AAA PCL debut tomorrow.
