Alternative History MLB Double Knit Era Series by Carolingian Steamroller (FINALIZED DESIGNS ALL 31)

Padres today.

For color scheme I went with the navy blue and copper scheme I worked out as part of my last series. The thesis being that copper is close to both brown and orange and as such could actually invoke both the brown and blue eras of Padres history.

The uniforms are broadly inspired by Japan's uniform in the last WBC with metallic trim alongside pinstripes. I couldn't decide whether pinstripes should also be included in the away or alternate uniform so I've provided everything for comparison.

C&C as always. Enjoy!

This is one of my favorite concepts in this series yet! Glad you decided to buck the trend with a less conventional color scheme, and that you used San Diego's current wordmarks, which I think are actually pretty great. I'm a big fan of the pinstriped options, especially the all-navy one. Nice job!

Arizona Diamondbacks today:

This was tough. I wanted to do something geometric so I figured out a diamond pattern based on equilateral triangles in a pattern that created a successive diamond pattern like the back of a Western diamondback rattlesnake. For colors I've opted for a blending of classic purple with modern turquoise with a hint of gold/sand.

For the road uniform I've opted for sand with a turquoise alternate. I've also thrown in a purple softball jersey with sand lettering. I've gone with collars the same color as the jersey like the old Atlanta Braves since the wide diamond pattern offers plenty of detail.

C&C as always! Enjoy!

The Padres look really nice! I love the navy & copper scheme, and its implementation. I prefer the non-pinstriped options myself, other than the home. They look cleaner to me.

And, wow! The Diamondbacks are crazy! I find myself liking how the scheme looks, as well as the pattern. My only concern with that would be how visible it is from long distances, since it's so intricately detailed.

Great work with these two teams!

We reach the end with the San Francisco Giants!

I love the elegance of the '70s Giants script, something that was wiped away by the overly generic '80s design. Here I've adapted an away script from the same style and opted for the late '70s "SF." For the waistband, I took the sock stripes and translated them which makes it look like a doubled up version of the classic three-stripe soutache. In figuring out the collar, I took the traditional piping but added a notch, reminiscent of some recent AS Roma designs. The look I was going for was a traditional collar, with the top button rakishly undone.

I hope you've enjoyed this series as much as I've enjoyed designing it. Let me know you comments on the series on the whole and any further thoughts.

Enjoy!

I like it! I've always loved the cursive script logo, and I like how you've handled the collar/sleeve/waistband striping in a way that preserves the OG Giants' character. I didn't think I'd like a cursive "San Francisco" script, but it looks really good! My one recommendation would be to make the "F" look more like a traditional cursive "F," but that's a minor nitpick. Well done!

This whole series has been really impressive. While some may not be to my taste (i.e. Diamondbacks, Mariners, and Marlins), I still appreciate the craftsmanship that went into it. Your Astros concept is one of the few times I've found myself liking the slab-serif font, the Yankees were a fun break from tradition, and the Rays/Nationals were good modern takes on the 1970's aesthetic. I look forward to seeing what you'll do next!

Wow! The D-Backs certainly turned out interesting. I'm glad you went with their original color scheme but dropped the black. Since that shade of turquoise is so bright, I think you should make the sand more of a dark cream color, a la @FinsUp1214's excellent D-Backs concept. And on the all-turquoise alt, I wonder if the snakeskin pattern on the sleeves and waistband would work better if you replaced the turquoise portion with sand so it contrasts with the rest of the uniform. I'm also kind of surprised you didn't carry the pattern over to the socks.

The Giants look excellent, but I agree with @SFGiants58 that a more traditional "F" might help on the road jersey. Other than that, perfection!

Congrats on finishing a very unique and creative series. Will you be doing updates for any of the teams?

I'll tinker further with the DBack but for now here is the road with @FinsUp1214's shade of cream. Thanks for all the comments on this series! I shall be doing an outtake and outlaw post in the near future.

Personally I liked the oddly shaped "F" since it reminded me of the "G" on the home script but I'll tinker with it and see if I can come up with something more cursive.

Thank you for the kind words on the series. If I'm being honest, a lot of the concepts on the series aren't to my personal tastes either. The idea of this being a speculative series often took precedent over what I personally would like to see the team wear. The Marlins are a classic example. I like a restrained look for them but I thought they would go in a more radical direction if pullovers were still in play. Additionally, I was religiously following two other outstanding MLB redesign threads (yours and @MJD7's) and wanted to let those outstanding designs stand on their on own no matter how much I really wanted to mimic them. The Angels were a good example. Both your and MJD7's designs were as close to perfect in terms of color balance as it could get so I tried out red/metallic gold.

I've looked at this tread occasionally, and I just want to say I love the creativity you've put into these designs. The unique-ness of these looks, and the over the top design aspect on some of these are really darn fun, rockies and marlins especially, and these seem realistic for like a TATC type of thing, but like as a pullover promotional. Also, just curious, but why no NOB? If i remember correctly, teams had NOB's on their pullovers, so is it just like a constraint or did you just decide to not put them on? Either way, this is one of my few favorites series on here now and keep up the good work, my man. :)

I like that road script for the Giants, but the "F" in "Francisco" looks a bit strange. It looks like a lowercase letter instead of an uppercase one. If you straighten up the top of it and get rid of the curvature, it should look right.

Trying out a straighter "F" with a little cursive feel.

Thanks very much! Regarding the NOB, its a combination of two factors: 1. I personally prefer the NNOB look since I can enlarge the number and move it a little higher up and 2. a little laziness.

Outtakes and Outlaws

A bunch of stuff that didn't make the cut here. A few early takes on the Astros, another A's alt, Angels in alternative colors, a sublimated DBacks, traditional Blue Jays, Seahawks-style Mariners, an early maroon and silver Twins, single pinstripe Yankees, solid gold Rockies.

Let me know what your favorites sets or divisions were! We had fun ranking them in my last thread. Enjoy!

I think you wound up making the right choices, although I have to admit the Mariners concept with Seahawks colors is very sharp.

Favorite concepts by division:

NL Central: Pirates (with Milwaukee a close second)

AL Central: White Sox
NL East: Nationals

AL East: Blue Jays

NL West: Padres
AL West: Astros

If you're going to be doing tweaks, here's what I'd like to see:

Marlins: I think you could stand to experiment with the striping a little further.

Red Sox: A different hat option for the Patriots Day uniform. Maybe a red cap with navy "B?"

Rangers: How about a red home alt so that you don't have two alternates of the same color?

Rockies: As @MJD7 suggested, add a yellow outline between the blue and the red on the numbers of the white jersey.

Dodgers: Red front numbers on the blue alt for consistency throughout the set.

D-Backs: See my above comments.
