Historical location markers/plaques (sports related)

Recommended Posts

I'm a history buff, and there's something special about standing in the exact spot where something once stood or where something special happened. Also extra cool when you have to go on a bit of a hunt to find it.

Feel free to post any, or just ones you've visited personally. These are ones that I've visited myself-

Inside Moerlein Lager House, Cincinnati.

I couldn't for the life of me find the ones in the parking garage, but this was cool.

Heinz Field parking lot- This one has to be one of my favorites due to the fact that it shows exactly where his foot landed.

There's two yellow seats in Right Field at Tropicana Field. One is for Boggs' 3000th hit and the second is for the first home run as a team, also Boggs

Happened to sit right by this seat the first time i ever went to a game there, back in 2003.

It is what it is.

The Sabres' original arena was built over the terminus of the Erie Canal during the Depression. Now that the arena is gone and the canal is sort of back, there's a marker where center ice used to be when the canal is turned into an outdoor rink in the winter.

That guy has a really closed stance.  :P

Seriously, you would think they could have him facing the right direction.

I was in Milwaukee for the NCAA Tournament back in March, and thought this marker was pretty interesting when I walked by it:

Not my photo.

The sign is only about a 10-minute walk away from my apartment. I walk by this sign at least once a week. It's across the street from the Milwaukee County Historical Society's headquarters and Pere Marquette Park.

I love the idea of this thread! Anyway, here are the ones that I have.

First professional football game plaque located just outside of Heinz Field:

Sweet! I really enjoyed Milwaukee, despite the snow. The bars (Brass Alley, Safe House, the names of the others are, uh, hazy) were fun. Ended up at a random neighborhood dive bar out by the airport one evening, definitely not something you find a lot of in the south.

Speaking of Milwaukee, this is one of my favorites.  It commemorates old Borchert Field, home to the minor league Milwaukee Brewers (not to mention the NFL's Milwaukee Badgers and the first Milwaukee home of the Packers).

Unfortunately, the very ground where Borchert Field stood is gone; they bulldozed and excavated about twenty feet down to build an interstate.

You can see all the cross-streets are now elevated above the road.

So the historical marker is two blocks east of where the ballpark stood, in Rose Park.

I am a little disappointed that a few of these markers are in the vicinity of historical locations ("a few blocks NW of here", "near this site").  "George Washington slept somewhere near here" misses the point of what makes a place historic.

It's better than nothing, but yeah I know what you mean.

In Montreal, the site where Victoria Skating Rink (site of the first professional indoor hockey game) once stood, is now a parking garage. It would be very easy to mark it with a plaque, but the plaque is instead inside the Bell Centre, a few blocks away.
