Changes to Titans uniforms in 2018 are 'not minor'

If the Titans are going with navy helmets, then it's time for the Texans to switch to white helmets. Maybe the two franchise can negotiate a deal to allow the Oilers identity/history to return to Houston. I don't think fans in either city would have a huge problem with that. If the Pelicans and Hornets were able to pull it off a few years ago, the NFL is certainly capable of doing it now.

Really? The Texans have a far more solid brand and brand presence than the Bobcats ever did. This isn't a case where "the fans will only accept the franchise if it has the old name" like it was in Charlotte. The Texans have won more playoff games than the Bobcats, have been around for longer (16 years, compared to the Bobcats' 10), and have a firmer identity, with one uniform design that's gone mostly unchanged since inception. Compare that to the "musical chairs" nature of the Bobcats' uniforms, where they could never settle on a single look. People have accepted and embraced the Texans, and changing them back to the Oilers for nostalgia's sake would hurt that. Besides, we don't need people dicking around with the NFL records again, especially in a post-facto nature.

Let the Oilers die and stay dead.

I'll give you this, a white helmet would both look good for the team and enable a faux-Oilers throwback. That'd be neat.

Sir, I wouldn't have an Oilers helmet with my personal logo on it if I didn't think you were severely mistaken. If anything, I'm going to act like the whiny :censored: I've wanted to be on these boards by kicking and screaming about how Columbia blue should replace the navy in the Texans set, at the very least.

The Oilers identity is so much better than the Texans it's not even a competition. That said, I agree that Texans has been relevant long enough that a name switch wouldn't be necessary. It will never happen anyway, the Adams family are very stubborn about keeping that history.

I'd say it's the other way around. Sure, the Texans may have a boring color scheme, but they make up for it with a dynamic logo that ties together state iconography. They also have an excellent minimalist uniform design, with the USC-style shoulder stripes and the colored collar. I like it more than the Oilers' design, which just does not resonate with me at all.

P.S. The NFL retired the name "Oilers" upon the Titans' rebranding, so the Texans can't use it and the Titans can't switch back to it. Move on guys, and don't ask for more record book dickery.

Honestly, if the Texans would just swap navy for powder blue, that could work. Maybe toss in a white helmet to make it a bit more Oilersy.

In a vacuum, the Texans identity is, while maybe a bit safe, pretty solid for a team from Houston, Texas. But in a world where the Oilers existed before the texans? That identity is bland, boring, and downright forgettable.

I would go so far as to say that the only thing that is stronger about the Oilers identity than the Texans is the unique color, Luv Ya Blue. Other than that, the Texans identity is very clean, modern yet timeless in a league where many teams are stuck with looks that are modern yet dated. The Oilers identity is just old and isn't worth dredging up when everybody has fully accepted the look that J.J. Watt has nearly made iconic at this point.

Also, who the hell's idea was it that the Titans changing their helmet color meant that there was some convoluted coordinated switcharoo of helmets and color schemes going down behind the scenes between the Texans and Titans? Its not that deep, folks.

Is there really a clamoring for the Oilers identity in Houston? Texans fans seem to enjoy the current team and its identity.

Also, these colors go hand in hand with the identity. Changing it to columbia/powder blue wouldn't make any sense.

I understand your point...on the flipside, Luv Ya Blue and red had nothing to with oil, and many teams have colors that have nothing to do with the actual identity. Sometimes colors transcend the identity.

I edited this a thousand times. I recognize that I need a time out :peace:

Both? You need to remember that those of us who care enough to seek this forum out and sign up? We're in the minority. We're the weirdos. We all went "what a shame the Cavs had to win in black t-shirts" but to everyone else? Yes. That look helped redefine the Cavs' brand.

Seems the Cavs' C on a black background became a huge part of their identity after the Cavs won the title in that look.

That it simply exists doesn't make it a success. Revisit this identity in five years... the all-important title notwithstanding, conditions are similar to BUF in '06: a team riding the waves of success introducing a (somewhat) critically panned uniform. We'll see if it survives without Lebron. Regardless, I wasn't referring to the color scheme or logo:

Lebron did more to (figuratively & literally) destroy sleeve unis league-wide than winning a title did to save them. Nobody is petitioning to bring back "victory sleeves," but speaking of petitions...

I mean I think it could stand up to scrutiny. My only point with the merch sales was that it proved that the general Sabres fandom wasn't so against the Slug. That one year boom after it was introduced could have been enough to make it stick had they won the Cup.

I mean Buffalo and Cleveland are very much alike. Northern Rustbelt town, a "blue collar" identity, and tons of heartbreak when it comes to sports. The Sabres winning in the Slug would have associated that uniform set with the city's ultimate "redemption." Much like the C on a black background became that for Cleveland and the Cavs.

Within a month of their unveiling (& pre-Twitter boom), 25,000 fans signed an anti-slug petition. BUF acquiesced with throwbacks for 1/3 of their home games. This all happened before the 06/07 season. Five of the top 10 jerseys that year were Sabres, all of whom earned All-Stars bids (half the starting lineup was Sabres that year). Like @Cosmic said, the wheels fell off when Briere & Drury left. Without the "novelty of new," the loss of star players, & no bandwagon, the slug was salted - one of the shortest-lived rebrands in sports history. The actual fan base panned the slug before, during, and after its use.

I think some site members overvalue uni designs and ignore the full picture. You couldn't have picked a tougher target for a theory that hinges on “it didn't happen, but you cant prove it wouldn't have.” No wonder Dan Parker isn't banned ;)

And sometimes it don't. This would be like the Ravens going blue and white to look... Coltsy.

If the Colts had significantly shifted their color palette when they moved to Indy...and if the new team was "Baltimore Marylanders"...you'd probably have some fans saying "Yeah, I wouldn't mind having blue and white in Baltimore again". Plus the Oilers were in Houston 13 years after the Colts moved, so there is still some recency bias.

Did these become iconic or did people say “what a shame they won a title in those?”

I wouldn't say it's iconic but it's going to be remembered forever because it was apart of the greatest NBA Finals in history. Once they won, that jersey became a legend for the city and the state. It's just how it goes, kinda like how Nick Foles is forever going to be seen as a football god to the city of Philadelphia.

Nobody liked sleeves in the NBA, but when you do what Cleveland did, it doesn't even matter anymore. If I were a Cavs fan I probably would've went out and bought a Lebron Finals jersey myself. Perception is a strange thing.

Also, Tennesse Titans. This thread is about the Tennessee Titans.

I had actually mocked this up last night --

You could just make their helmets white so that one of these looks could be an alternate.
