I'm still pissed they never paired that orange helmet with the white or orange jerseys. What a dumb idea it was pairing that with the black jersey.

WhenI had first glanced at this picture, I had no idea that was Donnie Baseball. That moustache would have helped though.

I had the exact same reaction.  The MS Paint mustache made him go from unknown generic white guy to Don Freakin' Mattingly.  One of the most distinct looks in baseball.

He's one of the few guys that can pull off a mustache like that without looking like total pedophile.  It's a very short list.

You're right that Mattingly needs the mustache in order to be recognisable.

But you're wrong to suggest that it's a short list of men who look good in a mustache. Having a mustache is the natural state for a man. While everyone's mustache cannot be as beautiful as mine, almost every man looks better with a mustache.

Yeah - BEARD is literally the natural state. Mustache is a vain alteration to nature’s design. Of course so is being clean shaven, but whatever.

Just busting balls. Tom Selleck and John Oats FTW.

To not have elected to wear those uniforms in games against the Rockies is a strange choice indeed.

That would have been a nice touch but the Padres did exist in 93 so it's not awkward to do it against them especially if the Padres end up wearing throwbacks as well. A really strange choice would have been to do 1993 throwbacks against the Rays or Diamondbacks. Actually, thinking about the Padres vs Marlins in a "celebration of 1993" it would be a great weekend for them to honor Trevor Hoffman in some way.

Do Marlins fans feel any special affinity or rivalry with the Rockies?  I know they came into the league together, but that doesn't necessarily resonate.

The Marlins could have dragged out the throwbacks against the Dodgers, their first opponents back in 1993 (the Padres were the second).

Yeah I'm kind of surprised the Marlins didn't choose to wear the throwbacks against the Dodgers; in 2013, the Rockies and Mets wore throwbacks to celebrate Opening Day '93 (even going so far as having the Rockies wear road uniforms at Coors Field, as their first game was at Shea in '93).

No real rivalry or affinity between the Marlins and the Rockies, though.

edit: I realize the Mets have a great home uniform, but the underline really looks good, IMO.

Smart is believing half of what you hear. Genius is knowing which half.

Nope. None. I personally have always "kept an eye on" the Rockies because both teams started together but there is zero connection between the two as far as the fan bases are concerne whether it's as a rivalry or as some brotherly connection.

Edit: The Rockies wore road throwbacks at home? That's both awesome and weird.

It's strange, but does happen.  In 2013 the Twins wore road St. Paul Saints throwbacks at Target Field.  It was supposed to be a home-and-home series with the Brewers, but Milwaukee felt that they were doing too many events like that and decided not to host their half of it after all.

To be fair, Target Field is in Minneapolis. It kind of makes sense for the team to wear the road jersey of the St. Paul Saints while playing in Minneapolis. :P

It’s still silly, but a little less silly when considering the nature of the Twin Cities and the historical Millers-Saints rivalry.

I think he meant the type of moustache Mattingly sports.  The Hogan is always a sign of manliness and virility.

Phillies camp doesn’t open until tomorrow, but Rhys Hoskins was out there yesterday signing autographs...in last year’s BP/ST cap. I guess the truck with the new caps hasn’t arrived yet

I live near Clearwater and the Threshers posted that the truck arrived over the weekend, but it was probably just older stock the facility had around before full camp starts.

I used to go out and catch the first few Spring straining practices of the year when I lived in Arizona and every year they wore the previous years gear until just before the first game. Seems pretty normal to me.
