colortv Posted September 27, 2017 Share Posted September 27, 2017 The Phoenix metro is now the 12th largest in the country(meaning they represent a market larger than all but 11 teams in the NFL) and the city of Phoenix itself is now the 5th most populous. Generally teams seemed to be named after states where the largest metropolis isn't all that big. There's nothing wrong with trying to reach out and identify with an entire region (one that has its own customs, history, feel to it) Not everyone will agree with me but to me you don't absolutely have to play within the city limits of a city to claim you represent it. It almost sounds like a minor league baseball team, but it is easier than saying "Massachusetts Patriots" or "Foxborough Patriots". I do hope one day they revert back to Boston Patriots. As far as the Cardinals, keep it as Arizona. "The Seattle Seahawks take on the Phoenix Cardinals at University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Arizona." Sounds a bit college-y. It's not better, it's just familiar. And if it is the right way then they should be the Glendale Cardinals. Any time I see one of those NFL fandom maps the Patriots always completely cover New England...so it appears that they actually do represent six states. It's not silly if it's true. I'm surprised the Thunder are not simply "Oklahoma" since it's not like Tulsa is going to be getting an NBA team (and that would improve their road jersey). But, those teams also played in those cities at one point in their history and moved within the metropolitan area, whereas the Cardinals never played in Phoenix. They very briefly tried "Bay State Patriots", but quickly abandoned it because the initials for "Bay State" described the quality of the team. I've always said they could've solved all of their problems by originally naming the team the Phoenix Snakes or something similar. I get that the Arizona Diamondback rattlesnake is a thing, but its still SO clunky. They looked Cheesy when they first came out by putting Diamond over the word Backs, but they've made it SO much worse with this D Backs nonsense. I don't care how long and arduous it is to say the full name Arizona Diamondbacks or Even just Diamondbacks. It's a MILLION times better than D Backs.
