He seems to fit the profile of a modern manager: smart enough guy who's also smart enough to know he can only do as he's told. Nah. Definitely not the way Moose rolls at all. CS85
Looks like the Nats hired Dave Martinez, formerly of the Cubs. Quote "You are nothing more than a small cancer on this message board. BBTV
The Phillies hired Gabe Kapler to be their manager, even though he's only managed or coached for one whole season, a long time ago, at some super low level. But, he loves analytics and healthy eating, so there's that. EDIT: apparently this is what he looks like. Guess none of the players will be getting away with excuses for not working out. BBTV
I don’t get how a guy without managing or even coaching experience gets a job as a manager at the highest level. He has a background in player player development and analytics - doesn’t that qualify him for front office roles rather than on field? i guess he’ll have to have a very experienced bench coach, though the word on the street is that it could end up being their AAA manager, so that doesn’t help much. RichO
Seems to me if you have a young team what you want is a manager with a background in player development, who has the understanding of analytics it takes to manage a lineup. The rest is dealing with personalities. From his pre-Dodger front office writing he's willing to try out different ideas. Of non-retreads known to baseball fans, if you can't have Alex Cora, you want Kapler or Dave Martinez.
BBTV
Based on that photo the Phillies hired John Cena to manage the team. LMU
Alright, as promised in the postseason thread, my 2018 Dodger roster prospectus. Ethier - If he doesn't retire they'll buy him out at $2.5M. The $17.5M vesting option is a non-starter. Gonzalez - I hate to say it, but I hope he retires. His replacement is here and with his antics of ditching the team for Italy then sneaking back only to be told to leave again he's a distraction at this point. Granderson - Peace out. Darvish - He choked himself out of a contract. Kazmir - If he's healthy try to get something out of him. Otherwise hopefully he joins A-Gon instructing fantasy camps. Forsythe - His playoff performance earned him an option pickup. Watson - Can let him walk with other options. So, what do we have? Rotation: Kershaw Hill Wood #4 and #5 - Plenty of wiggle room here. McCarthy's still on the hook for $11.5M. You also have Ryu, Kazmir (if healthy), Maeda (see below), and the rookies. Ideally, Buehler gets the #5 spot. Also ideally? They put together a package and bring in a replacement for Darvish (Throw one of Stewart/Stripling and some minor leaguers). Or maybe throw money at Lance Lynn? Bullpen: 9th - Jansen 8th - Morrow (PAY HIM!) 7th - Maeda Lefty Specialists - Cingrani, Avilan Mop-up: Baez Long relief: McCarthy? Ryu? Lineup: Catcher: Barnes/Farmer. Throw Grandal in a trade package. 1B: Bellinger. A-Gon maybe as a backup if he doesn't retire. Forsythe can spot start. 2B: Forsythe. Taylor/Hernandez can cover as well. SS: Seager. Hernandez/Culberson (if they re-sign him) can plug in there as well. 3B: Turner. Spot starts by Taylor, Forsythe, etc. CF: Pederson/Taylor platoon with Taylor shifting to LF/IF? LF: Taylor/Hernandez/potential trade or FA (JD Martinez?) RF: Puig I get that they're trying to cut payroll but with most of the obscene contracts coming off of the books next year and the year after they can stand to make a couple high-profile signings.
