Exactly. The thought that Anaheim is a "medium" sized market is ludicrous.

Especially when you consider that the medium-market Anaheim baseball team shares a network with the LOS ANGELES Kings and the Ducks share a network with the LOS ANGELES Clippers.

Here's the thing about the Angels that most people down there won't admit. There's a BIG a difference between being in a "Medium sized market" and just flat out being a second-rate organization. The Angels are definitely the second one. They'll never touch the Dodgers, no matter what they're called.

He'll need it based on the last two decades of major Angels FA signings.

Vaughn

Hamilton

Matthews, Jr.

Pujols

Torii Hunter is the lone exception. You also forgot Vernon Wells and C.J. Wilson.

I'm very excited about Ohtani coming to the Angels. With Upton re-signing and now this, it's been a pretty good offseason so far. It makes it even sweeter that they beat out the Dodgers and the Mariners to get him. Suck on that, Jerry Dipoto.

There's no question that the Angels have had nothing to show for all of their big free agent signings these last 7-8 years and have somehow managed to field a mediocre team year after year despite having the best player in baseball.  But In all fairness, the Angels have finished 7th in average attendance in back-to-back seasons, and I think they've averaged at least 2 million fans per season for 15 seasons in a row.  I wouldn't really call that second-rate. Also, they have something the Dodgers haven't had since the late 80's, and that would be a World Series title.

Judge. Stanton.

(Not official, but I'm already terrified)

If anybody was unconvinced that baseball needs a salary cap before, I think it's pretty much unanimous now.

I was about to say this. It’s so stupid to hear Cashman say just the other day that it was important for them to get under the $200 million mark for next season, then goes out and does this, just cause they can. Cashman must have been watching the college coaching search, and wanted to give it a shot to see what it’s like to give people the run around

As for Stanton... I’m disappointed with this. Not as much as i would have had he went to the Cardinals, but I’m still disappointed. He definitely wanted to win championship, and this is the place

Now watch Judge come crashing back down to earth and Stanton get popped for roids.

As a Mariner fan, you can bite me... small market my ass. The guy didn't want to be in the shadow of what Ichiro did in Seattle. That's why he said no... well, that's my opinion anyway.

Good luck in Anaheim, he'll need it.

Middle of the Yankees' lineup:

Aaron Judge

Giancarlo Stanton

Gary Sanchez

Didi Gregorius

Greg Bird

Homers galore.

This is probably Cashman's biggest heist ever. And this is a guy who has traded for reigning Cy Young Award winner Roger Clemens and reigning AL MVP Alex Rodriguez, as well as Bobby Abreu, Nick Swisher, Curtis Granderson, Sonny Gray, etc., all in fairly lopsided deals. The 28 year old reigning NL MVP, plus $30MM in salary relief, in exchange for Starlin Castro, a mid-level prospect, and a fairly obscure 18 year old minor leaguer. Holy crap.

And FWIW, there's still a really good chance that the Yankees will get under the luxury tax threshold in either 2018 or 2019. They'll have Stanton and Gleyber Torres (at ML-minimum) for about the same amount that they paid Castro and Holliday in 2017. They also have lots of money coming off the books after 2018 - Gardner ($11.5MM), Headley ($13MM), Sabathia if he gets resigned, Chris Carter. So the Yankees can easily re-set the luxury tax still, since so much of their roster is filled with pre-arbitration and pre-FA guys. These aren't the days of the $200MM+ payroll Yankees with tons of aging free agent acquisitions.

He also didn't want to be part of team that needed to start a Cubs/Astros-style rebuild several years ago.

A quick recap: Jeter bought the Marlins using mostly other people’s money, completely gutted them, pushed out a bunch of longtime employees, and traded their once-in-a-Generation player to the Yankees.
