Portland Pioneers Alliteration, has a local connection, and there is a historical precedence: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pioneer_Base_Ball_Club_(Oregon) Portland Pioneers is an awesome name as well. And I can already see the team retaking this team photo with the exact same hairdos!
Gothamite
That would be good, were it not for the aforementioned local college problem. Back in the 1990s and early 2000s, the last time we thought Portland might get an MLB club, “Herons” was often kicked around. The Great Blue Heron is Portland’s official bird. http://audubonportland.org/news/great-blue-heron-week-june-1-june-12 Good fit with baseball’s bird theme, emblematic of the city and reflective of the local culture. uk-owns-iu
I was always been set on Pioneers until I heard about the legal issues. I hate that because I'd like to see a brown & yellow team in Portland. I know the Oregon Trail video game had a bunch of color schemes but nothing says the Oregon Trail better than those colors and it would be a unique and traditional scheme for MLB. Only down side is it might be redundant with the Trail Blazers. Maybe go with Wagons or Settlers to get around the legal issue. Moving on, yeah I'm warming up to Cascades. Every team from Portland to Seattle has considered that name so I've always seen it as too generic but I think it could be a good brand. Another idea would be the Portland Ports. Portland getting a team and decking them out in brown and yellow while the Padres conduct their 15th focus group would be pretty fitting.
PDSMLO
Portland Sticks: - unique - the name capitalizes on that early form of baseball -- stickball - much of the US considers the Northwest to be "out in the sticks" - a new stadium will be built using some very big sticks that will be sticking together in the form CLT (cross-laminated timber) - Oregon is full of big sticks and would be full of Portland Sticks fans - of course the team would carry "big sticks" - our team and fans would always "stick it out" and "stick in there" until the end - the team would always "stick it to" our opponents I think this will be a name that sticks. PDSMLO
Portland Totems: - unique - the totem pole originated in the Pacific Northwest - pays homage to early inhabitants of the region - a wide range of potential logos from which to select and design - totem poles could be displayed in and around a new wooden stadium - Northwest Coast art could be nicely incorporated into the stadium design for a team named the Totems Befitting of a wooden stadium built in the Pacific Northwest, I propose that it be called: The [insert corporate sponsor's name] Lodge. http://www.koin.com/news/mlb-in-portland-wood-stadium-may-be-game-changer_20171130085834477/870122757 https://ballparkdigest.com/2017/07/20/how-to-lure-mlb-to-portland-an-all-wood-ballpark/ http://portlandtribune.com/but/239-news/368256-250036-wood-products-ninth-inning-comeback

AceHawk447
Props to Gothamite for bringing up the heron. I'm warming up to that as a team name, and I'd agree the plumage of the bird (as in the accompanying image) would lend well to team colors. I'd pair that blue with a deep forest green or—wait for it—port.
