Villanova is a smaller school, only has one recent title, and only two final four appearances in the past 33 years.

Come on, bro - get some perspective here. They're not Duke, Kansas, UNC, Kentucky, et al.

They JUST won a title, and have been in the upper echelon of college basketball for as long as I can remember. They’re not exactly Boise State.

I hope Penny does well, but I'm old enough to have seen those old Tiger teams.  Even with Memphis "All Star" teams, they always fall apart or only get to a Final Four by cheating. He'll sell tickets, but they won't get to Final Fours which that fanbases expects. They are Louisville wannabes.

I don't, but I hate the Memphis Tigers. But even looking at it objectively (-ish), I can't understand how they can be so excited about him.

They're a premier basketball program. Maybe not Duke, North Carolina, or Kentucky level, but whatever the closest thing is to that. Seems silly to call them a small program, but maybe Vet is just doing a reverse jinx thing.

At the moment, they are in the upper echelon with the blue bloods. Before Jay Wright, when Steve Lappas was head coach, they were mostly a bubble/NIT team. They may not have the rich history as a program like Duke or Kentucky, but they are most likely on their way.

It is a small school program by any definition of the term.  Do you see Villanova merch in stores nationally like you do all of those other programs that were mentioned?  Is there hate for Xavier or Butler, who I assume would be in relatively similar class?  Again, 2 final fours in 33 years isn't even close to what these "always there" teams are, and it's really only been the past what - 10 years that they've been in the championship mix at all?

I don't know most of the players anymore (the only time I really paid attention was the Randy Foye, Allen Ray era) but they don't have the same kind of assbags that Duke always seems to have, nor the entitlement that NC has.

I think it's just "I hate who's good and think that sports are better when the deck is completely randomized."

"The views expressed here are mine and do not reflect the official opinion of my employer or the organization through which the Internet was accessed."

Since 04-05, they've made the tournament all but one season, and are a consistent favorite to go deep into the tournament. They also just missed out on winning five-straight regular season titles in one of the best conferences in basketball. They may not be Duke, Kentucky, or North Carolina, but if we used that metric to determine who the big programs are, we'd only have the three.

I like seeing small teams make big runs, especially in a season when mid-majors seemingly got the shaft on at-large bids, but I'm not going sit around and pout if we get a Final Four of Kentucky, North Carolina, Kansas, and Michigan State or something.

I have little-to-know interest in NCAA basketball until (if) Villanova makes the actual championship game, but yeah if there was one super-tiny "sister of the poor" school in there against the big guys, I probably would tune in and root for them, so I get that.  I guess my perspective is different since I don't really have a team and don't follow as closely other than the finals, so I don't see teams like Villanova as the "bad guys" but I guess I can kindasorta see how some might, though they literally aren't bad guys like some of the others are.

Another thing is that they don't have one-and-done players like most of the major programs, so there's at least some continuity from year-to-year.

I'm not sure if Nova is up there with Duke, UNC, Kentucky, and Kansas in terms of reputation.  They are still prestigious, but I think they share a slightly lower tier with the likes of UConn, Georgetown, Syracuse, and Ohio State; usually good but not completely unthinkable if they aren't.

This is correct, but add Michigan State to the second tier.

With the Bulls and Blackhawks being as crappy as they are this year, there's maximum attention on Loyola. I'm not a big college sports guy but this is a fun little side project for us.

♫ oh yeah, board goes on, long after the thrill of postin' is gone ♫

I have a feeling this has a Duke title written all over it, and I think it’ll be over Loyola. It reminds me a lot of Duke/Butler and I think it’s going to end the same way.

Not that I want that, cause I don’t, but I really think it’s inevitably leading to it.

Villanova- A power house school but not like UNC or Duke. Want them to win because I have them winning in my bracket.

Kansas- A power house but usually falls short in the Final Four.

Loyola Chicago- The Cinderella. The little guy. Would be awesome to see them win.

Michigan- As someone from Ohio, I dont give a damn for the whole state of Michigan.

Agree with all of these. Especially with the last one.

My personal preference of Not Grayson Allen is going to win the title, so that's great!

Normally I don't root against a player, but Grayson Allen makes it pretty easy. He's like Laettner's whiny little cousin who punches you in the back while you're fighting someone else, then runs away when you turn around to find him.

Chris Mack is leaving Xavier for Louisville.

This really wasn't a secret that he was their candidate of focus, especially since his wife is grew up there.

The issue was going to be how interested he was going to be when there are questions regarding the Brian Bowen recruitment/payment are still to be ruled on.
