Needschat
The new Arena League team in Albany won't be nicknamed the Firebirds. The team's "Name The Team" contest is down to four: Phoenix, Empire, Machine, and Fire. http://albanyafl.com/news/story/?id=13868 Oh what could have been.... Dynasty
Empire. There are many creative opportunities for an identity with a name like that, plus Albany is the capital of the Empire state.
TBGKon
Should be Firebirds..... .....but since it wont be, Empire would be best one of the rest.
DCarp1231
Is the AFL slowly rebuilding itself? Eh, probably not, but it's nice to see them give it a shot.

I think they understand it's better to keep teams within driving distance of each other to keep costs down. I like Phoenix, especially since you could bring back the firebird logo as a fauxback uniform.

If the ownership didn't want Firebirds to be the name, they should have stated it before all the voting began. Honestly, I think these names were chosen by the group BEFORE, because we all know 'Birds was most popular and NO ONE would think of Machine. Oh what could have been.... True, but if the Phoenix wins I'm totally claiming myself as the person who named the team. "I always wanted to be somebody, but now I realize I should have been more specific." Sport
Fun fact: around 2004 I was looking for sports logos to use (steal) for my fictional football league. Mainly poking around logoserver.com, which is still active, amazingly. I really liked the Albany Conquest's logo package and name. That snooping eventually led me to these forums. Burmy
They say they can't be the Firebirds because of "trademark issues"...but doesn't the AFL own all the old team names & logos?

It appears that Gridiron Enterprises, the original Arena League people, still have the 1998 trademark. Hmmmm. Oh what could have been....
neo_prankster
I can understand wanting to create something new, but doesn't the name Firebirds have a lot of history in Albany? I still kinda dig that early helmet they had. The Fictional Story of Austus
Discrim
I figure it'll be Phoenix or Fire, given those would be the closest they could get to Firebirds. A strong mind gets high off success, a weak mind gets high off bull
