Before I look locally, what's going on in Denver today?

I flipped through channels and saw Rapids/Atlanta Utd. on Univision and there was a VERY SMALL crowd.   The side the camera shoots at was virtually empty.

The Rapids suck and don't draw well in the first place. Probably not much more to it, honestly.

Peter B. Freund and Craig Unger - owners of both the United Soccer League expansion franchise Memphis FC 901 and the Pacific Coast League champion Memphis Redbirds Triple A baseball team - have purchased an English professional soccer club.

Through Victoria Road Football Club, LLC, Freund and Unger - along with American goalkeeper Tim Howard - have acquired the majority of ownership shares in Dagenham & Redbridge FC, an East London-based professional soccer club that competes in England's fifth-tier National League.

Joining Freund, Unger, and Howard in the Victoria Road Football Club consortium are Dan Schwab, Michael Schwab, Amy Silfen, and Mark Butler.

Down 1-0 at halftime FC Cincinnati scored twice in the second half to win their 8th straight match, unbeaten in 19 straight (since May 26th) and have clinched the USL Eastern Conference title tonight at Penn FC. They have a chance to clinch the USL Supporters Shield as the overall regular season champion next Wednesday at Richmond.

USL announces new branding and three-tiered structure modeled after the Football League in England: USL Championship, USL League 1, USL League 2 (the former PDL).

Details here: https://www.uslsoccer.com/news_article/show/953025

So to simplify...

Current USL = USL Championship

New USL D3 = USL League 1

Current PDL = USL League 2

....and holy crap do the pro/rel trolls come out in social media about this.

I'm guessing the sleeve patches will slightly change but I don't see it being the logos shown here.

I know USL gets a bad wrap among the purists for being "in bed" with MLS, but they are slowly but surely positioning themselves for an opportunity to break away from MLS and establish their own working system in the US....which would leave MLS out in the cold and looking foolish.

I don't have a horse in the great pro/rel race, but this is the most painful Europandering in American soccer yet.

That’s a long way off, but maybe not as long as you’d imagine. It’s already a better brand of soccer than MLS if you ask me.

I wish nothing but success to the USL; and I really like its new naming convention. But it will never, ever surpass MLS.  Nor should it try to.

The appropriate role for the USL is to complement MLS: to provide a proving ground for teams — and for fanbases — that are trying to get accepted by MLS; and also to be a place for MLS B teams to play.  And I suspect that the people running the USL know this.

The idea that USL is a better product than MLS seems rooted more in contrarianism than in fact. USL is a valuable product, but can't ever compete financially with MLS. And it really shouldn't.

In 20-40 years there may be a pathway to pro/relationship among the four American soccer leagues, and that seems like a reasonable goal. But that's about as close you can get to the idea of USL surpassing MLS.

I agree completely. The MLS has done a lot to grow the game and its fan culture in the U.S., but I'd argue that leagues like USL play an even bigger role. It's remarkable to me that a league that includes large metros like Indianapolis, Charlotte and Pittsburgh also includes smaller metro areas Bethlehem and Harrisburg, Pa.; the Rio Grande Valley of Texas; Reno, Fresno and Tulsa. Those are markets MLS can't reach on its own.

True, and MLS shouldn't be reaching those markets on its own.  That's not what they do.  But soccer wouldn't be viable in those smaller markets without MLS paving the way.  I remember the implosion of the original (real) NASL, and it did incalculable damage to American soccer all up and down the leagues.

I don't want to minimize the contribution of the USL, showing that lower-league soccer can have a viable business model.  And their geographic reach is larger, scattered across three leagues, so their role will continue to be invaluable.  Soccer needs local clubs in small- to mid-size cities just as much as it needs large marquee clubs in major markets.  But people wouldn't be investing Bethlehem, Reno, or Tulsa if MLS hadn't stabilized the sport in our country.
