When Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver currently have MLS teans, they're already in on any deal.

But who else is brought in? Hamilton, Ontario and Winnipeg? Mexico will still dominate unless they all decide that the purse strings are now loosened for MLS teams. That means LA and New York will dominate while the Midwest teams either mortgage the future or just decide that mid-table is a lofty goal. Canadian teams will be even further down, except for probably Toronto.

Could a combined league mean that Mexican TV revenue filters its way north? I could see it kind of working, but mostly to the benefit of owners. This isn't a Wales/England EPL thing. I think there are cultural factors that would make this a tough sell to the respective country fan bases.

Also, I don't think Americans could handle the advertising aesthetics of Liga MX. Yuck.

Soccer is such a hard sell in this country as it is, and right now they’re doing a REALLY good job of keeping the momentum going and building interest. Fixing what’s not broken by bringing in MX teams would be downright moronic. It basically guarantees a five year stretch where MLS teams will get absolutely destroyed by Mexican teams. Nobody wants to watch a league wide rebuild. Also, having worked several friendlies vs LMX teams, I can tell you that’s a FANTASTIC way to scare away new/casual fans from games.

The idea of going out on a Saturday night to watch a team like Pachuca or Chivas kill my MLS team while I have to deal with the crush of their rowdy insane fans and get called a puto all night sounds about as much fun as drilling wood screws into my feet.

It's not sport, it's now a TV show for Garber and those he works for. DG is right.

Liga MX is the more popular in terms of attendance and TV ratings.  They need TV revenues to drive their future.  Any such merger would be the revenue boost MLS needs and could likely take them out of antitrust peril

Yeah but does that do anything to boost the actual product rather than just line that the pockets of a bunch of rich :censored:s?

I mean, if that’s how MLS works that’s how it works. It’s basically the same way the other 4 more popular sports leagues operate. But if so, they REALLY need to quit blowing smoke up everyone’s :censored:s about how they’re “So different!” And are so desperate to “grow the game”.  It’s the same scam everyone else is pulling.

I’m sure the money would make a solution like that palatable to Garber and the owners. Problem is, it’s good for literally NOBODY else. It’s done in such bad faith that it’ll cause soccer to stagnate right where it’s always been among our collective consciousness. A joke of a game that is only popular with brown people and Europeans. AND we still suck at it.

I would hope that their overall mission isn’t completely derailed by a cheap quick cashgrab like merging with Liga MX. I’m probably being too naive, though.

If they did a type of expanded Champions League that coincided with the MLS season I could get in to that. I'm more afraid it'll feel like this is their way of doing promotion and relegation, but confining it to MLS, Liga MX & Ascenso and the Canadian Premier League.

ESPN,Univision and FS1 are currently overpaying for US/MLS rights through SUM. US failed to make Russia 2018 and MLS ratings aren't what they expected. A better TV product also attracts better US based advertisers and  sponsors. The current MLS TV deal goes through 2022 and while it's bound to increase, because they nearly always do, based on the ratings during these first 3.5 seasons, it isn't going to increase appreciatively even with Miami, Nashville and Cincinnati in the league. MLS kinda needs LigaMX for TV legitimacy.

Greater TV money would allow for in increase in  both GAM and TAM (or whatever it might be called in 2026) and even academies.

More revenue beings in better talent.

Better talent = Better league.

It is really hard to imagine that, even in eight years, Liga MX will want to adhere to TAM GAM thank you MAM roster building rules, or for that matter that MLS will let go of its micromanaged structure and even have the ability (let alone the desire) to fully open the pursestrings.

Lansing, Michigan will be playing host to a USL League One team beginning next year. The team will apparently be named Lansing Ignite

Lansing Soccer Club LLC - owned and operated by the same group as the Lansing Lugnuts minor league baseball franchise - has entered into a five-year deal with the City of Lansing to play home matches at Cooley Law School Stadium.

Jeremy Sampson, owner of the amateur Lansing United men's and women's soccer clubs that respectively compete in the Premier Development League and United Women's Soccer, has joined the Ignite management team. As a result, the Lansing United men's squad will be ceasing operation with the launch of Lansing Ignite. Sampson will continue to own and operate the Lansing United women's team.

The Columbus Crew may have just been saved. Jimmy Haslam may be involved in keeping the team in Columbus. Also hearing Austin might not get off the ground until at least 2021, as UT Austin apparently wants nothing to do with Precourt and Austin FC

Saw an interesting couple of tweets......

Sounds like Precourt is selling the Crew!

Jimmy Haslam had explored moving Browns training camp to Columbus in the past. I wonder if this could be connected? Maybe some sort of soccer/football complex for both teams to use. While keeping the Crew in Columbus and trying to grow the Browns fanbase in the area? Probably a reach, but something that could make sense from a business standpoint.

Sounds like Austin is getting a team still too.

Yeah Austin still would be getting a team but they likely wont start right away. At this point I think its more like who will start play first Austin or Miami?

It sounds like the best possible deal for all involved. Congrats Crew fans. I'm happy for them.

Next step is for Columbus to upgrade that stadium. At least install some proper seats!
