I thought this passage from that article was interesting:

Teams try to avoid wearing jerseys that are the same shade as huge portions of the court; players become harder to spot as they traverse the paint. (David Stern, the league's former commissioner, threw a fit when he flipped to a Rockets game in the mid-1990s and struggled to spot players wearing blue jerseys flitting through the blue portions of Houston's infamous floor from that regrettable design era.)

It might explain why Bucks didn't use Mecca court with their City jerseys.

Here's a shot of the Sonics playing on that 1995 Rockets court and you can see how rough it is even if the picture quality isn't that great but it just adds to the point that the NBA didn't want teams getting lost in the colors of the court. Nowadays in the era of HDTV it's more clear who is on the court so you get things like the Warriors wearing yellow at home and Rockets wearing red.

The thing that bugs me about the current Lakers set is that they just don’t look like the Lakers to me. The two purple jerseys diverge WAY too far from the traditional Lakers set for my liking, which is annoying. But even the home gold set still just looks off to me. I can’t quite put my finger on what it is, but it’s distracting.

Actually, this whole Lebron on the Lakers thing still feels like bizarro world to me in general. The new uniform set just emphasizes it a lot more. Not sure I’m going to get used to this one any time soon.

For me, it's the yellow stripes that is throwing everything off.  If it were white/purple/white, it would be fine.  It would be the Lakers.

The Magic alternate has grown on me after hating it at first.  The hideous road purple with the black side panels still confuses the hell out me, though.

This is the part that just messes with me so bad. It’s like they wanted to go back to that look, but add their own touch to it. I hate that Nike (Really, ALL sports brands) always insists on doing :censored: like that.

That 95 Rockets look is way better than now

I think they could have a really cool navy/red/silver set without the hideous gradient pinstripes and clunky number font.

The courts were great, the logo was cartoony but decent (the cartoon rocket is still cool enough to put on the current City shorts)...but the unis just didn't do it for me.

Smart is believing half of what you hear. Genius is knowing which half.

The logo's more interesting to me and the numbers have depth.  I guess this goes in the unpopular opinions thread.  The stripes can go.

Too, too cartoony. The beveling was too extreme and the jerseys too much, especially after wearing the same conservative look for over 20 years. The only component I liked from the logo was the rocket, even if it was too cartoony.

I had some of the same issues with the Pistons, Hawks and Sonics. I’m a homer Jazz fan, so I give them an exemption. 😂

The Spurs and Bulls are going silver vs. white tonight in San Antonio, which is less than ideal contrast to say the least:

According to LockerVision the Bulls were scheduled to be in black tonight, so I’m not sure why the Bulls ended up in white instead.

What a shame for a game between two teams with great historical identities/brands like the Celtics and Pistons to end up being a black vs. gray matchup (for the second time this season, I believe.) The Celtics have done a pretty good job (other than the black jersey) of maintaining their brand in the Nike era, but the Pistons have let theirs go to hell outside the classic home and road..

It has felt like the pistons barely wear their whites and royal blues anymore, which is a shame because both the statement and city jersey suck.

Unpopular opinion: I kinda like the Detroit greys?

My biggest gripe with them is the thick blue shoulder piping which doesn't match their regular home and away jersey and my feeling that they shouldn't be the "statement" jersey (which seems to essentially be equivalent with alternate jerseys of yesteryear in Nike speak) over the red alternates they used to use, which were a much better fit in their identity.

I liked the adidas verison more because the navy and white gave the uniform more contrast.

I can see that, but I like the current greys mostly because I like how it handles the side stripe red/blue trim better than the home jersey's stripes. And I guess I like the blue text with red trim too. Wouldn't hate a return of the reds, though. And no more "Motor City" ever.
