XFL 2020 Season

Both the AAF and the XFL want to take advantage of the spread of legalised sports betting.  So presenting a show instead of a legitimate competition is the last thing they are going to do.

The Simpsons once had a gag about Krusty making a huge bet against the Harlem Globetrotters.  (He figured the Washington Generals were due.)

The only way you can make scripted football is with the officials, and executed in WWE ways.

team A throws Hail Mary touchdown pass as time expires - team A wins!

wait - official Bob Smith just threw a penalty flag, and the play must be re-done - it doesn't make sense; it was a phantom call!

team A snaps the ball and the pass is batted down, team B wins!

official Bob Smith is - my god, no!  he's removed his XFL referee uniform to reveal a team B shirt!  what a traitor!

etc

NFL has already done that one to an extent.  Damn, that was back in 2012?

Things you could do with a worked football league (other than everything the NFL does since Vet says that's rigged anyway).

  • A masked player. Nobody knows their real name. Could later be revealed to be a coach's long lost son or somebody's brother or something. Or if a player is suspended they return with a mask or even like a fake mustache to fool the refs. Lots of possibilities.
  • Referee distractions. Maybe somebody's running down the sideline and a coach trips the referee following, opening the ball carrier up to an illegal horse collar tackle.
  • Mystery opponents.
  • Really goofy looking tackles. Football footage from every football movie ever is 85% wacky tackles that usually don't happen even once per game.
  • People can still complain about too much offense. These young guys need to slow it down and stop making so many plays.
  • On-field betrayals. Imagine the Packers running a play from their own goal line, they snap it to Rodgers who immediately chucks the ball out of the endzone for a safety throws up the double bird to the rest of the team and leaves. He returns from the locker room having now joined the Lions. You could have something similar where the offensive linemen get tired of the QB and just stand by as he gets destroyed by the defense.
  • Remember when Hue Jackson forced a player to play more in preseason as punishment? How about a similarly horrible/incompetent coach that forces a star player to play both sides of the ball?
  • A bad and/or evil commissioner that undermines their own product. You know, just fake stuff that would never happen in real sports.

Vince McMahon is a very interesting character. When it comes to the business of wrestling, I'm going to listen to every word he has to say. I'll be taking notes while whispering to myself, "this is friggin genius!"

If im having a conversation with someone about anything else and Vince chimes in, I'm going to yell at him. "SHUT UP, THE ADULTS ARE TALKING!" It doesn't matter if we are talking football leagues or ham sandwich construction. Outside of wrestling, Vince is an idiot.

The funny thing is the original XFL was an attempt to give football back to red blooded muricans. They advertised that there was no halo rule on punts, the players were working class saps like us, and made the game seem more dangerous because even back then some people felt like it was getting too soft. It didn't work because people turned off by the NFL either don't watch football altogether or they watch the massive minor league already in place (NCAA). He learned nothing.

Even so, it's frustrating to see spring leagues fall apart despite all the evidence of the NCAA being so crooked.

I will watch any league, any sport with a loser leaves town match where the losing team is immediately contracted.

Only for the team to come back the next week wearing masks.

The best wrestling concept that could be carried over to SPORTS is the “money in the bank” briefcase.

Patriots win a hard-fought Super Bowl, then while the confetti is falling, Doug Pederson shows up out of nowhere to hand the referee the briefcase and then a well-rested SBLIICPE destroys a tired Patriots team (in a game that goes until 3 AM) and becomes the <Fink> NEWWWWW Super Bowl Champion</Fink>

FWIW, Oliver Luck spoke with KMOX in St. Louis and he mentions TV.

The Luck interview starts at about 20:00 mark to the 30:00 mark

Spoiler

Yes, because it IS St. Louis, the KMOX host sarcastically had to a dig at a certain NFL free agent who reached a recent settlement with the NFL.  Plus a question on how to 'raise your kids' too.  Typical St. Louis and it seemed entirely scripted, especially with the last caller question.

Within the radio hit, Luck said:

Quote

“Two of the four games will be broadcast over-the-air, terrestrial, major carriers, and the remaining two games will be broadcast over cable, but fully distributed cable sports brands people will recognize.”

“We’ve got a cadence going of about one Head Coach announcement per week and we will get all our markets done by the end in March. At some point, probably in April, we will be able to launch the team names, team colors, identity and logos.”

Luck also talked about the player pool but did not mention how the AAF impacts those numbers. He did mention they will NOT be subject to the NFL eligibility rules and with Luck's NCAA experience, he thinks they can weed out the younger player not ready for the professional level.

Shout out to the caller that made sure to let everybody know he still cares about people standing for the anthem. There's always somebody.

I expect nothing less from St. Louis.

At least it would be a watchable game.

As if there aren't those people in every city in the country.

There are people like that in New York, San Francisco, Portland, etc. Some guy wants to be a smartass (read: dumbass) and brings up the whole kneeling issue well after its relevancy has expired. At this point, kneeling might as well be like Gamergate in that it gets brought up long after it's dead and buried plus attracts unsavory people looking to take your money by appealing to your anger.

Pep Hamilton and Jim Zorn have officially been named the head coaches/general managers of XFL franchises in, respectively, Washington D.C. and Seattle.

Pep Hamilton named head coach and general manager of XFL's D.C. franchise

Seahawks legend Jim Zorn named coach and GM of Seattle's XFL franchise

Also, during an interview on Washington's 106.7 "The Fan", Oliver Luck had the following to say about quarterback salaries in the XFL:

"Well, we're gonna offer quarterbacks more money than anybody else (in the league)."

"We can offer quarterbacks as much - you know, during the course of the first year - as $400,000... $500,000... $600,000."

"That kind of money can compete with a kid who's on a practice squad, or who's making the minimum in the NFL."

The XFL has a budget to offer high-profile players commitment bonuses, potentially worth hundreds of thousands of dollars, if they are willing to give up playing in the 2019 NFL season, The Action Network has learned.

The new league, which begins in February 2020, is not looking to offer 2019 NFL draft-eligible players deals until after the actual draft, but executives have told agents at this week’s NFL Draft Combine in Indianapolis that they are willing to spend money to induce first-year players to skip the 2019 NFL season and begin preparing for the XFL.

XFL executives will be presenting to agents on Thursday in Indianapolis to give an overview of the opportunities.

The XFL plans to have an active roster of 45 players. There will be four salary levels.

  • Tier I Player: One slot per team (most of the time will be a QB). Will make at least $250,000 per season.
  • Tier II Player: Three slots per team
  • Tier III Player: 23 slots per team
  • Tier IV Player: 18 slots per team
