That’s what we heard last time.

The very first XFL broadcasts did outperform NBC's expectations, but that was it. People tuned in once for the spectacle, found very unappealing games and then tuned out. And that was when the XFL was new. Now, it's going to be the same product again, with no clear signs the actual on-field talent will be any better. So why would I want to watch?

Yea and last time a hell of alot more people were watching WWF.

Now? This week's raw got the lowest rating EVER since the show began in 1993.

I'm sure vince is not worried one bit now that he has access to that sweet saudi cash...I'm really starting to question wwe's true motivations and think that mcmahon and his ilk only align themselves with patriotism and pro USA stances when they stand to profit off it. Maybe we are all getting played for fools here?

I know we're not suppose to get political and stuff here or whatever but it's very well known that Vince is a republican and his patriotism is serious. He allegedly rewrote this weeks episode of Raw because of the passing of George H.W. in order to "lift the fans spirits" or something which is hilarious cause the show didn't lift any spirits and sucked like most WWE shows have this year.

As far as the XFL goes, I actually do believe Vince will distance himself from any controversy, wrestling and general edginess. I think he really wants this to be a straight up shot at football. The last experience clearly bruised his ego and now he's out to get it right.

Should have came up with a new league name, Xtreme is so late 90’s early 2000ish.

Well it’s been covered how the X never stood for “Xtreme” anyway, but besides that? The first XFL may have failed but it failed in such a spectacular way that it’s become a pop culture novelty. People who were never even alive during the first XFL’s run know what it is. They did a 30 for 30 on it.

So going with fhe XFL name is actually smart. Not only will people call any league associated with Vince McMahon the XFL anyway but the name has built-in recognition. It’s like Crystal Pepsi or New Coke. Something so unique and off-the-wall that even though it failed? It remained relevant in the pop culture consciousness for decades after it failed.

People will check the new XFL out at least once for that reason.

He seems to be doing a lot to separate this new XFL from wrestling, so I  don't think they're counting on wrestling fans watching it simply because of the association.  Technically it's owned by a separate entity, so it's not even like there's "natural" crossover opportunities like last time when they had the wrestling announcers pretend to know what a post pattern was.

Sorry, I don’t buy it. Technically owned by a sperate entity, sure, but everyone knows the XFL is the Vince McMahon league, and Vince=WWE.

Will the WWE shill for the XFL like it did the first time? Probably not, but it wouldn’t shock me if it did. Even if it doesn’t though? Enough people will link the two.

I'm sure this seemed like a great idea a year or so ago when the NBA hyperpartisans/embedded p.r. agents of the media class were writing all this stuff about how the NFL was dying and the NBA was primed to pass it, but it seems like enough people forgave the NFL since then and don't need another football league to give them what the NFL wasn't.

Pretty much. NFL ratings have rebounded.

Announcing a rival football league because the NFL experienced an abnormal dip in ratings for a year or two seems pretty stupid a year on from the announcement.

That can’t be it though, because I have assurances that Vince is a genius.

The thing I’m not really getting is the markets. I get St. Louis, but why would you want to try to embed yourself in so many markets that already have NFL teams? That seems like a pretty steep climb right from the get go. The one thing I think the original XFL sort of got right was aiming for smaller markets like Orlando and Birmingham. I can’t really see markets like Dallas and Seattle, which are already super crowded as it is, getting behind this.

I’m sure this has all been mentioned here before, but this league intreagues me about as much as the left over Chilis takeout I have in the fridge from two weeks ago. I’m kinda in the dark on this whole thing. Do they have any rationale behind why they think that’s going to stick?

Also, the fact that half of these teams are playing in NFL stadiums shows me how much of a threat the NFL finds this whole venture.

While McMahon, as a conservative, may actually be peeved at the NFL for how it handles the national anthem issue, there is clearly a profit motive here.  McMahon believes (maybe right, maybe wrong) that many NFL fans are also conservatives, Trump supporters, etc. and that they will be attracted to a league that takes a stand, that plays on nostalgia for a "traditional" brand of football and that plays up the jingoistic "Patriotic" card.  I am sure that to a point he has that right, but then his choices of cities make even less sense.

They make no sense from a media standpoint.  Placing teams in cities that already are packed with major league franchises (all 4 sports) is already a questionable move, but if his target audience is more conservative, 'Murica types, he would be far better off looking at Birmingham, Orlando, Texas or other Red-State locations.  Putting teams in LA, NY, Seattle, DC makes no sense if you want to attract that demographic and then you add on top that no TV station in any of those markets has time to cover XFL games because of all the other teams they need to cover, and I don't see this as a recipe for a successful league.

And last time he believed that many NFL fans thought the NFL was the “No Fun League” and they would be attracted to a league with fewer rules, bigger hits, and less regulation over player behavior.

He was laughably, demonstrably, wrong last time.  And given all his bizarre choices this time there’s no reason to believe his guesses are any closer to the mark now.

They'll "link" the two, for a minute, till they don't see any WWE references anywhere.  Also, apparently Vince won't even have any facetime and is delegating most - if not all - of this to Luck (I think that's his name).

If the wanted to do crossovers, obviously he has the power to make the WWE talent do it, but it's a little more complicated since they'd have to sign... something with Apollo rather than simply have their WWE deal altered or had a promotional appearance added.

I've heard from my sources xfl brass is targeting this guy for their core demo.

XFL Commissioner Oliver Luck on Tuesday gave a timeline for when the league will release branding details:

Quote

"We’ll have our team colors, our team names, our team logos in January, February, March of next year."

Hopefully he's smart enough not to. Part of what took the XFL 1.0 down, among others, is that the WWF at the time tie ins lent it an air of farce and illegitimacy.

It was Week 4 where the ratings were below expectation. The funny thing is, even the 1.5 'record low primetime ratings' which were barely worse than the worst Stanley Cup finals aired on primetime network TV, would now be sought after, because LIVE sports means live viewers, and less likely to skip commercials a la DVR, etc. It's one of the reasons sports property rights fees are skyrocketing. They're the only thing on TV guaranteed to draw a live audience. And that's where the money is today.

broadcast rights were skyrocketing 10 years ago but that bubble burst much like all other inflated assets over the last 20 years...espn is losing their asses on the nba and there are more examples of regional sure bets (lakers, dodgers etc.) that have been financial disasters than I have time for.

For some reason the powers that be neglected to factor in that endless price increases for service combined with lack of compelling content at said price will drive consumers to opt out of paying for cable, sports packages or both.

The rumors and leaks on 2020 XFL team names has begun and if some of these are true it means either MCMahon has lost it and dragged Oliver Luck with him or the entire XFL is designed to be a tax write off.

Tampa Bay Mystery Ships?

Seattle Subterranean?

Dallas Greats?

Houston Launchers?

This has to be a diversion, right?  The XFL cannot possibly be serious with this.

You yourself said it's just "rumors and leaks", but there's not even a source cited, so I'm not sure there's anything worth getting worked up about.

The Dallas Greats should be able to use Green Bay's G logo, because I've been told that's what it stands for.
