That’s like saying all jerseys are just different shirt designs... they’re all pretty much the same, right? It’s a genre of trophy, but that doesn’t mean they’re all the same. The Stanley Cup silhouette that they came up with in the 50s is a classic. If the Cup looked like this below, I don’t think it would be nearly as beloved:

No. All of them are trophies, but not all of them are cups. Hence, your shirt comparison is not valid. Neither did I say that they are all the same.

The O’Brien trophy is not unique; a bigger league in the same country does the same idea better. The base of the Lombardi trophy is shaped to meet the football and provides a good, solid connection. The O’Brien trophy’s basketball looks like it’s supposed to be tangent to the base, but it’s hard to build real things like that. It has an awkward little squib holding up the ball.

That's already going into deep trophy design specifics, which I'm not a specialist in. That "little squib" holding the ball definitely looks aesthetically fine and appropriate to me. And it is a unique design with a basketball on a basketball hoop.

The Lombardi trophy, on the other hand, doesn't do anything for me.

How about that old NFL on NBC intro with the over-the-top phallic symbolism of the Lombardi Trophy penetrating the ground glansular-football-first and triumphantly rising up to brass fanfares? That's gotta do something for someone...

Honestly, I've always disliked the O'Brien Trophy. Its oversized base is ugly and awkward to hold, and it really does kind of resemble a trash can. The Lombardi Trophy has a similar concept, but executes it so much better. It's a very natural shape, whereas the O'Brien Trophy just is not natural at all. The NBA would've been better off using an actual cup crowned with a basketball at the top, rather than this weird basketball-on-the-rim-that's-about-to-fall-off design.

The Commissioner's Trophy is just... meh. Not great, not bad, not distinctive, not really recognizable outside of fairly dedicated baseball fans. Perhaps the polar opposite of the Stanley Cup in that regard.

How do you determine prestige?

In terms of importance to a player's legacy, The Finals matter more than any other championship. In terms of meaningfulness to a team/city, I don't see how we could argue that the Super Bowl isn't the end all in American sports. In terms of historical value, the cup might be the one with the most "prestige." In terms of name value just for the contest itself, The Finals is the most generic for sure.

As for the NBA comments, I think people blow the NBA based on the way they handle their personnel and manage the game itself compared to other leagues. The changes they made to the All-Star game were great, and I supported their decision to move the game from Charlotte in wake of that anti-LGBT bill. When it comes to design, there are LOTS of complaints that have been made for good reason. The loss of The Finals logo is a travesty. Nike's first year has meant a lot of muddled identities and chaotic uniform choices. And :censored:ing ads on jerseys UGH.

EDIT: Big Four Trophy Rankings

Lombardi: simple, elegant, can be grasped in one hand triumphantly

O'Brien: easily the worst name but a cool-ass golden penis

Commissioner's: love the look of it personally, but it doesn't really invoke baseball nor is it fun to hold

Stanley Cup: it's cool and historic but ugly to me (TO BE FAIR, it's awesome to pick up a giant trophy like that over your head... ok maybe I'm not sure on my rankings...)

ALSO, very much miss the crystal football from the BCS days, the Playoff trophy is kinda wack in comparison.

Can we talk about this? Talk about a travesty. The crystal ball was an awesome design, and the Playoff trophy is just dumb. If they wanted to keep the removeable aspect of the trophy they should’ve made that piece much smaller.

I had this idea of riffing off the Playoff logo by having the gold cone be the base and the and the center be the removeable crystal ball. So from the top down it looks the same (like the Playoff logo), but the the middle comes out instead of the whole thing.

While I appreciate the boldness of the O’Brien trophy, it’s simply not a good or practical trophy design. The best trophies can be either be raised by one hand (Lombardi, World Cup) or need two hands to be held, whether it be by the body (Stanley Cup) or handles (Champions League). The O’Brien has the shape and proportions that make it impractical to raise with one hand, but usually it’s held by keeping an arm wrapped around it and leaning it against your body like it’s a particularly bulky package. I’d replace it with a slightly bigger version of the current Bill Russell trophy.

The Commisioners trophy has similar problems, exacerbated by the fact that it doesn’t even have an interesting shape and just looks like a giant pincushion.

Something like the BIG3 championship trophy? Having a tough time picturing your description.

The net is a little “off” IMO, the base is not quite right, but that’s a pretty nice trophy.

I think the O'Brien trophy photographs well and I like that it's off-center. Also, of the two greatest trophy presentation photos of all time, the O'Brien is in one of them:

The is the other:

Didn't have anything in particular in mind, but just an actual traditional cup-style trophy (like the Premier League trophy or the European Cup), but with a basketball on top. Would be a way to display a basketball without some hokey basket design.

This. The O'Brien trophy has been made way too iconic by Michael Jordan and then Kobe & Shaq to be suddenly replaced with something else.

I had a similar idea, and had posted this in another thread from a few years ago --

The idea was to be using the current trophy as a pedestal for the real trophy. The ball would be removable, so you aren't carrying around and hoisting this awkward thing --

It could look something like this --

I'm sure someone could make it look better and more cohesive, but you get the idea.

I loved the way it would glow under the lights. Nothing better!

That’s exactly what I was thinking. Only I would sink the ball into the cone so it looks just like the logo. The way you have it makes it hover above, but it’s basically what I was thinking. Great minds think alike I guess.

That would make this trophy one of the best in sports by far.

It looks worse than a trash can.

When I visited Paterson, New Jersey, I found to my great surprise that they have really nicely designed trash cans.
