Also very amused that they signed a free agent named R. Nash.

You won't be when the Jackets make the playoffs and Riley Nash is running around with no idea how to hockey.

Just making the playoffs is a fun season for me! When will you people learn?

No, that's robbing Peter to pay Pierre. The market has done nothing wrong, the team is just a gong show. Also, their TV deal is worth like $30 million a year, you don't move those teams.

To think this team was one goal from repping the East last year.(Of course it is kinda like a repeat of Boucher's first coaching job with the Lightning in 2011)

Awesome.

Unrelated, the thread title still sucks.

Ducks announce they will retire Paul Kariya's No. 9 on Oct. 21 and Scott Niedermayer's No. 27 on Feb. 17.

And there was much rejoicing.

Wasn't a fan of Kariya going to the Hall, but he certainly deserves a retired number in Anaheim. Long overdue.

Based on his numbers as they were, I agree. If it wasn't for Selanne going in last year plus the recent "short-career-clause" additions of Lindros and Bure, he probably wasn't going in. He had a lot of external things going for him last cycle.

However, I'll also say, if it wasn't for him going into the Hall and him being pulled out from his self-imposed hockey darkness, we'd probably still be waiting on that number retirement. It all works out.

We're only in July. But the Lose for Hughes sweepstakes have already officially began here in Habsland.

Good luck to you. We need another elite pair of brothers out here on the West Coast to fill the void left by the Sedins.

Good News for Blackhawks Fans: They got rid of Marian Hossa's contract.

Bad News for Blackhawks Fans: Marcus Kruger is on your team again.

Why is that bad news? Kruger was an outstanding shutdown center when he was healthy. He was terrible with the Hurricanes because they didn't know how to use him in a "fling bad shots and pray" system, and was probably hurt. If the Hawks can actually score goals with their top three lines, Kruger is a useful piece on the fourth, though I'll allow for the possibility that here in the Golden Knights Era, no one can afford a pure defensive specialist at 4C or anywhere and that every line absolutely has to be Fast Dudes Doin' Stuff.

Here's Lambert not knowing his stuff again:

The issue for the Jets isn’t so much the salary cap as it is the fact that they’re a budget team. They have a small venue in a small market and have traditionally shied away from really approaching the cap ceiling. Last year they were more than $5 million short of it, and the season before that their obligations were about $6.5 million short. So the question becomes not only if the Jets will be able to keep those guys, but if they have the stomach to push that close to the cap ceiling (likely over $80 million at the very least) to do it. They have never exceeded $70 million in cap obligations, and though they probably will this year, one wonders if there’s a natural stopping point south of whatever the cap’s upper limit is.

One doesn't have to wonder at all. The Jets have the wealthiest ownership in the league and their small venue and small market overachieve into middle-market status. I'm sure their TSN money dwarfs the TV deals in Dallas, St. Louis, Nashville, et al. The line from Chipman has always been that they're not going to throw money away but will have the green light to spend to the cap when they're playing for a Cup. They're doing that now and we should expect them to spend to the cap.
