Yes, for 13 teams(to be 14 after tonight), the dream of the Lawrence F. O'Brien Trophy being in their hands is just that, a dream. Please to be discussing your next-season prospects here.

the nets don't have a draft pick and they're not a major player for any big time free agents. hell, we're not even a potential landing spot for "fringe" all-stars.

we'd be lucky to win 30 games in the 2018-19 season and it's very demoralizing to watch my favorite team in my favorite sport be not only bad, but totally and completely irrelevant in every measurable way.

now someone else, go!

But look on the bright side, you now own all your draft picks!

I've been reading some fun conjecture about a Kawhi-for-Simmons swap (with the assumption the Sixers also land LeBron and maybe Paul George too). To do that, you'd need to remove a bunch of the Sixers' core:

Fultz might never be anything, but Saric seems like the perfect Pop player.

Coangelo and Brett Brown both said that they need a big FA to get over the top, and all the speculation has turned to George over Lebron (a lot of the fan base doesn't want Lebron, though team management has said that while they appreciate the desire to build organically, they want to win now.)

They said that (forgive spelling) they would need to "renounce" Ilyasovic, Beleneli, Reddick, and / or Amir Johnson to get past the $25M needed to get a top guy.

There's a lot of talk among the fan base about Leonard, but they're not trading Simmons after one season.  That's silly. I don't know anything about Leonard (never even heard of him until recently) but there's speculation that there's other ways to get him here.  Not sure if he's a FA (guessing not if we're talking about trade) or if there's packages that don't involve Simmons that could be done.

They said that Embiid needs to be in better condition, to which I say screw-you.  They controlled his workouts and put massive restrictions on him.  They refused to let him play back-to-backs for most of the season.  A freak injury and concussion forced him to miss weeks without being able to train, so of course he wasn't in peak condition when he returned for the playoffs.  Obviously increasing conditioning is a good thing, but they really threw him under the bus and basically called him fat and lazy.

They both also threw Fultz under the bus, which is kind of harsh for a freaking teenager.

Nobody is acting like this is a team built around a star that has only played the equivalent of one season (Embiid), a 20-year-old rookie (Simmons), and a baby-faced 19-year-old who probably should never have been counted on in year one.  It's far from a debacle, it's just that they weren't supposed to win 50 games this year so everyone went nuts and it turned into "title or bust".

Brett Brown:

Quote

On growing the roster “organically” vs. adding a superstar free agent, the dichotomy in the fan base of how to proceed:

  • starting with fans, they have showed a consistent resilience, conflicted at times, but my feel is that there’s been an acceptance of growing it organically, “we all live with the pain of what we went through.”
  • if that portion of fan base is still prepared to take that notion and think it equals a championship, it’s “noble, but I don’t agree with it.”
  • another high level free agent is required and we have the ability to attract one
  • when the time is right, “we need help” to win a championship

There's a lot of honesty expressed by both in this story:

The best use of LeBron is pairing him with shooters. Simmons is not that, and who knows about Fultz. I don't think LeBron and Simmons work together; I also don't think you trade 10 years of Simmons for 2 years of LeBron. But who knows.

And I agree that Kawhi is a big unknown. When he played, he was a top five (three?) player. But him taking off 2017-18 and avoiding the Spurs seems really weird. He doesn't need to be everyone's best buddy, but I don't know who any franchise can trust him now.

Spurs fans in San Antonio are disappointed in this news: The Silver Dancers are no more. Replaced by a Co-Ed hype team. You would expect a move like this in Detroit or San Francisco, but deep in the Heart o' Texas?

I’m gonna be absolutely SHOCKED if Lebron doesn’t stay in Cleveland for at least one more season. Not only does leaving a team that just made their FOURTH straight finals not make a lot of sense, who else out there is really a better option, even long term? The Lakers, maybe. But that’s a pretty big maybe. Philadelphia? It’s an odd fit for what they’re doing, and I still don’t think they’d be better than Golden State. The Warriors? That’d Be HILARIOUS, but no. Houston? That would suck, I don’t think It’d work, and it would also be an odd fit.

Maybe the Celtics!

The only thing that makes sense for James aside from the Cavs are the Lakers. Just because it’s the Lakers. A premier team.

It’ll be an amazing feather in his cap if he can revive that team and lead them to another title or two.

Would be hilarious, especially with Kyrie there.  I don't even know cap-wise how that would even work.

I mean, Shaq of all people ended up in green, so....

Those later Shaq years were pretty sad. He played with LeBron on the Cavs and it seems like that should have meant more to all parties, but it was mostly forgotten.

James is a free agent.  He could take a dollar to play anywhere next year (he won't), so he can do whatever he wants.

If I could make anything happen, it would be to somehow get LeBron, Kawhi and Paul George together. That would require the Lakers dumping Ingram, Randle, Kuzma, the corpse of Luol Deng and probably Lonzo, but that would certainly be something to see.

I'm not a LaBrony so no. I don't want him anywhere on Celtics.

Raptor fans would jump all over it though.

He's obviously going to the 76ers anyway. Or some other East team.

I don't see him going out West where his toughest competition wouldn't just be in The Finals.

But it he went to the West, then all he'd have to do is make the finals.  Since the winner of the East would be cakewalk and all, right?

I don't think his goal each season is to make the Finals, so what difference would it make to him if he loses to the Warriors in the Western Finals or the NBA Finals?

There are no obvious destination for him this offseason, which makes it all the more intriguing.  Would he sign a one year deal and do it all over again next summer when free agency is more open?

If his goal isn't to make The Finals he would have either retired or jumped out West. There really isn't anything else for him at this point.

Even he knows he has a stranglehold on The East and going through the West would be a much tougher challenge.

Maybe he will do the rest the league a favor and finally retire. :censored: it, go play baseball or something.
