2018 NBA Post Season

Serious question:

Why are the NBA playoffs "pre bracketed"?

By this I mean why in the second round is the highest seed not matched up with the lowest seed? This year, assuming it plays out as it appears it will, you will have Houston  (#1 seed) playing the 4 or 5 seed, while #2 seed Golden State will play the lowest remaining seed, #6 New Orleans.

Seems like the #1 seed (or highest remaining seed) should have all the advantage, and should play the lowest remaining seed.  That's the way it works in the NFL.

Is it ease of scheduling? Is this how it is done in other sports with more than one level of "best of" series playoffs?

Really curious about that.

It is what it is.

I didn't know that.  In principal you're right, but that's just how tournaments work - bracket made in advance.  I guess since they're trying to crown a league champion and not simply a tournament champion like NCAA does, it would be OK and even make more sense to do the reseed.  Make it as hard as possible for the worse teams to just get lucky and win a tourny.

Sorry, the NBA isn't going to quietly sit back and let the last PNW market get murdered in the name of raking in lots of cash by not trying for 5 years.

Then that market will never sniff a elite player and never win a title.  Sucks for the owners that are probably sick of first or second round exits every season that they can't undertake a process to acquire as many top picks as possible given that the odds are that they won't all pan out.

I harp on the "process" a lot, sometimes to a comical degree, but in all seriousness I think it's the only way for the majority of teams.  The NBA is the absolute worst when it comes to the CBA, has more unattractive franchises than the other leagues, and has a crappy feeder system (NCAA) that only produces 1 true star every few years, and they're rarely good right away.  Hell even the Sixers had to make trades for European guys in hopes that they'd eventually come over some time (fortunately the main one did.)

Am I being too hard on the NCAA one-and-done players in the draft?  I admit I hardly ever watch basketball anymore, but only really quit like 5 years ago (coincidentally right before, but not because of, the Process) and I don't see how anything would have changed.

The Blazers whiffed on two generational players: Jordan in favor of Bowie and Durant in favor of Oden. It's really hard to come back from that. The 2008/09 Blazers could have had Aldrige, Roy and Durant at the same time. What could have been.

Lance Stephenson headlock suplexes Jeff Green to the floor and Chris Webber spends find minutes talking about a flagrant on Green. What a weird exchange.

Tonight was about the same as Friday, except this time Cleveland didn't completely collapse. Only mostly.

It's crazy to think how good the Cavs would be if they were getting anything at all from TT.

He probably thinks Stephenson didn't travel either.

Almost exactly what the Clippers did, and every basketball fan on the planet was yelling that that was a failure and they needed to blow it up. Guess the Blazers have to trade Lillard and blow it up too, then.

In all honesty, they should at least trade one of Lillard/McCollum. Their team is poorly constructed, built around two scoring guards who can't defend. Making matters worse, they gave so much money to scrubs like Evan Turner and Meyers Leonard, it's now practically impossible for them to make incremental improvements around the core.

Ten straight playoff losses, including getting swept in the first round when they had homecourt advantage, says the status quo isn't working for them. They're a team that should consider making drastic moves.

I am enjoying the heck out of the Celtics/Bucks series. Feels like Boston would be taking care of things if they weren't so hopelessly injured (never mind Kyrie, even Smart would be a huge upgrade over giving minutes to Shane Larkin) but that doesn't matter, this is the series we've got and it's wild. It's great to see the Boston young guys stepping up despite the lack of experience here, and Milwaukee's getting contributions from all over the place to say nothing of their block party D. If someone gets the Bucks a halfway decent coach next year I feel like they could really make a whole lot of noise.

It really does amaze me how scrappy this Celtics team is.

Brown, Tatum, Horford all have career highs this series.

In the long run it could end up being a great thing for them as it gives all these young guys that confidence & experience they wouldn’t have if Kyrie & Hayward were playing.

Bucks have also also shown they could be a threat in the near future if they add 1 or 2 more pieces.

It looks like the Bradley Center still has some life left in it after a couple of fun games this past weekend. I'm feeling the #Bucksin6 movement for this series. The team is definitely gelling at the right time.

I've said it before, but arena crowds wearing matching t-shirts always looks so dorky to me.

The same color would be fine if the fanbase were so coordinated, but this deal of wearing 100% identical t-shirts you got off the back of a chair is incredibly silly.

Getting chippy in Utah tonight. One of the best parts of the playoffs is when teams get sick of each other and want to start fighting.

Also, when Mitt f'n Romney is giving Westbrook a hard time: https://streamable.com/xu8tl

Utah and New Orleans are probably the most fun parts of these playoffs.

I haven’t seen a third quarter like the Rockets gave us tonight since the Warriors last did it.

No joke though, holy crap. It’ll be a shame if it doesn’t happen because Dubs Rockets is gonna be SO FUN.

On the scheduling point, the NBA really does like to start second-round series between teams that won easily before a seven-game first-round series is finished.

Game 1 of Golden State / New Orleans could happen before a game 7 in the East would.
