Report: Nike to Take Over MLB Uniforms in 2020

Sports Business Daily reporting that Nike will in fact land MLB's on-field uniform rights starting in 2020, swooping in after Under Armour's financial problems tanked the original MLB/UA deal:

No word yet on whether the swoosh would appear on the front of MLB uniforms (as was the plan with UA's logo). But either way, if true, this is gigantic news.

I thought when I first read this, I thought it was an April Fools joke, then I realize it's not April 1st.  Anyway that is great news only down part about it is they might go like the NBA and go too much color vs color or have visiting teams wearing the home white jerseys.  I hope it doesn't go that way.

I wouldn't be surprised at an NFL type deal.

On the sleeves, but two logos.

I think the right chest would be seen more than the right sleeve though and placing the logo there allows for more space on the sleeves as well. Too bad adidas wouldn't move in. Traditional baseball uniforms are one thing adidas does better than Nike, at least when they place them on the current templates.

That's why I'm sure that we'll see it.  If Under Armour was able to negotiate the better position for their logo, why do we think Nike won't be able to?

Pretty sure I remember reading Nike wanted their logo on the front of the NFL jerseys when they negotiated the most recent deal, but the league held firm.

I haven’t seen it reported anywhere yet, but from the sounds of it, Nike may try to go after not only the uniform/equipment contract, but the headwear contract as well. That’s one of the reasons why they didn’t push harder for a deal over UA to begin with. That would be absolutely ENORMOUS. MLB is basically the backbone of New Era’s operation, and if they lose that, the entire hat industry could change pretty dramatically. And normally I wouldn’t worry too much about it considering New Era has been entrenched with MLB for close to a century and a half, but this is Nike We’re talking about. They have the money to pull this off if they want. MLB has had similar contract issues and complications with NE just like UA and Majestic have.

Why doesn't Nike have the NFL hat contract then?

God I hope not. New Era makes the best hats in the world. Would hate to see Nike take over the hat game

I don't like the idea of the manufacturer's logo being on the front of the jersey, but at least Nike's logo is less obtrusive than UA's. So that's one good thing. There was probably some radically different new designs coming anyway, whether UA or Nike, so that doesn't make much difference to me.

Well, 25% of New Era hats are the best hats. The other 75% of New Era hats are poorly sewn, off-centered, poorly-sized crap that you have to return.

The projected sales margins for hats between the two leagues is a big reason why. Nike didn’t see it as worth the fight because NFL hats didn’t sell terribly well anyway. Things have changed pretty significantly since the switch to NE, though.

Also I’m not saying it’s a guarantee, im just saying that, if I had to guess, don’t be surprised if Nike goes as far as even trying to acquire NE in the next few years to make that happen.

What are the projected sales margins for hats in each league? If Nike could make a substantial profit from NFL hats, wouldn't it be easier to take over that segment?  And what has changed in the hat market since 2012?

I think we can count on that.

Yeah...if UA was going to get the front of the jersey, I don't think Nike would be getting less at this point.

If they did go to the sleeve, I'd be ecstatic.  But the best thing about this whole UA/Nike mess is that we got one more year before the change.

Disclaimer: If this comment is about an NBA uniform from 2017-2018 or later, do not constitute a lack of acknowledgement of the corporate logo to mean anything other than "the corporate logo is terrible and makes the uniform significantly worse."
