Denver Nuggets New Logos Details, NBA Trademarks Wordmark

May 18, 2018 - 16:38 PM

Back in March, I reported about new information I received concerning the Denver Nuggets and Memphis Grizzlies adjust their colour schemes along with some logo changes for the 2018-19 season. Now, just a couple days ago, a further piece of evidence […]

The Nuggets simply do not know what they want to be.

They really don’t. And I honestly don’t think they have ever known what they wanted to be. Going back to their beginnings, it’s one tweak after another pretty much every year.

I would love to know the number of years where the Nuggets didn’t make any changes to their look. I bet it’s in the single digits.

Growing up in the 90s, this the color scheme I associate with Mutombo, McDyess, LaPhanso Ellis, and Abdul-Rauf, so I prefer this to the current blue color scheme, as the NBA already has plenty of blue. It’s just too bad the Cavs have sort of taken these colors (minus the new black) and made it theirs, but there’s room for more than one team to use gold, wine, and navy.

Everyone brings up the Cavs, but I think the bigger issue here is that the Pelicans are already using basically the same color scheme too. Three navy, red and gold teams seems excessive.

Right, I forgot about the Pelicans, but then again their red is a brighter red, where the Cavs is more burgundy/wine.

If the Nuggets change their color scheme, and there’s nobody around to care (other than @Cujo), does it make a difference?

*Raises hand*

I care but I'm not a huge fan of this color change. I was born in '94 and all I ever associated with those colors are bad teams with a boring drab color scheme. I think the new logo and word marks are clearly upgrades over last season's which is good. I'm also excited to see how they are planning to incorporate the skyline into an alternate logo and why royal blue is present.

I wonder how a sky blue/royal red/yellow look would have been? Think Oilers but replace much of the white with yellow.

And one of them uses yellow while the other uses gold.

I'd have put the Nuggets in Avs colors or gone with the black/ice blue combo they did on a recent alternate. Maybe that could be a color scheme they could truly own, which has been a problem for them over the years.

Yeah the navy/red/gold color scheme is one that could really work for the Nuggets. It has a very Old West/Colorado feel, but they should have just stuck with it when they originally wore it. Now it kind of encroaches on the Cavs and Pelicans territory, which is too bad because it could be a really strong look for Denver.

In terms of the main colors between the three teams that will share this color scheme, they are still different in their own ways I feel like

The Cavs like to emphasize: Wine > Navy/Black > Gold

The Nuggets would be : Navy > Gold > Red

The Pelicans are Navy > Red > Gold

Although they share the colors (and slightly different shades), at least they will (hopefully) be different in their own ways still once we see the Nuggets set for this. Since the Cavs have swapped black into the slot that navy used to hold in the alternate, this should be fine for now. Of course the Cavs will prolly introduce a Navy city edition jersey for next year to ruin this though

The old one had *actual* gold (well, kind of bronze-ish gold IIRC) rather than yellow.

I see this as an attempt to cash in on the increasing popularity of Colorado's (admittedly beautiful) state flag. I have no issue with that - but they need to either use the colors as they are on the flag instead of darkening them, or use a metric buttload of yellow, because otherwise it'll be too drab just like the '90s version. (It would've been great if it hadn't been so drab though. It was an interesting direction for sure.)

But, yeah, they should take the plunge and go full Colorado colors (dark royal blue/regular red/yellow) rather than darkened versions, and use just a pinch of baby blue trim as a nod to their longtime use of the color. They won't, but they should.
