Minnesota Amateur Hockey League - 1957 Playoffs; Second Round

Why are they in the Lake Superior League though? Not disagreeing with your decision, just wondering why you decided to do that.

I put them there for a couple of reasons.

1. I'm kind of trying to keep cities that are mining towns in the Iron Range League and leaving towns like Grand Rapids, which is a lumber based city, in other leagues.

2. Grand Rapids is in an awkward location where it really isn't close to any other bigger cities, it is about an hour or more to every larger city.

3. Duluth and Grand Rapids have a bit of a rivalry in High School hockey so I thought having the two in the same league here would make sense.

I'm glad you like them, and I wish you guys good luck in the playoffs.

1936 Playoffs

There is a slight change to the playoff format. The top overall team now is on the same half of the bracket as the wildcard bracket. The second and third seeds are no win the same half. This just gets rid of the "advantage" of being the third seed.

Knockout Round:

  • The Saints defeat Minneapolis and advance.
  • In the wildcard bracket, the Victorias easily win and advance.
  • The Flames, in their first playoff appearance since 1928, upset the Hounds.
  • Le Bleus beat the newcomers from Grand Rapids and advance.

Second Round:

  • The defending champs blow out the Saints, sweeping them.
  • Two Harbors wins a close series against the Victorias.
  • Eveleth prevents the Flames from another upset, winning the series 2-1.
  • In a HUGE rivalry series between the Duluth Hornets and Voyageurs, the Hornets came out on top, but they will be shorthanded due to injuries from the physical series.

Semi Finals:

  • In another playoff meeting between the Mavs and Woves, South St. Paul came out on top to advance to the finals.
  • In a great, close, series, the Reds squeezed past Duluth and advanced to get back into the finals.

Will the Mavericks go back to back? Or will the Reds dynasty continue?

The Greyhounds somehow find a way to choke during the playoffs.

It seems like the Greyhounds and Minneapolis have a habit of choking, and the Lakers and Flames seem to overachieve in the playoffs.

1936 Kellogg Cup Finals

Game 1: The Mavericks out shoot the Reds 34-20 and win the game 2-0.

Game 2: South St. Paul winger Terry Trkla nets a hat trick as the Mavericks win game 2, 3-1.

Game 3: The Mavericks continue to bury the Reds as they dominate them physically as well as on the score sheet, winning handily and taking a 3-0 series lead.

Game 4: With their backs to the wall, the Reds are able to squeeze out a W before heading back to South St. Paul.

Game 5: The Reds switched up their game plan, going all out attack, actually bringing one defenseman into the offensive zone to be a fourth forward while on the attack. It payed off as Eveleth took the game with a 3-0 victory.

Game 6: Eveleth looked to do exactly what they did in game 5 as it worked like a charm, but the Mavericks had learned. The Mavs exposed the flaws in this ultra attacking styhle of play, scoring two in the first period on the counter attack. They simply went into a defensive shell, diving in front of any shots, only allowing 17 shots while blocking 34 in the last two periods. Despite allowing one goal, the Mavericks held on to win their second straight Kellogg Cup!

Way to go, Mavs!

I wonder if some of the teams already have fight songs or victory songs.

It's an interesting thought. If some of you guys have any ideas for songs or anything for the teams you support feel free to share them!

I eventually plan on some teams "adopting" well known songs either relating to the team name, where the team is, as a goal song, or just a story I make up for them.

Things aren't looking good. And after this last season finishing with only one win there are rumors swirling that the team may be on death row.

What would happen to the players if the team gets contracted?

P.S. Also, have you thought about doing an All-Star game of some sorts? Like, Team Minnesota vs Everybody else or something? Just trying to think of ways to make two teams with "three" leagues.

Possible theme song for Ely?

(Derived from the first Brisbane Bears theme song)

1st Verse
What do we sing when we run out to play?
Dare to beat the Bear.
What do we sing when we're on our way?
Dare to beat the Bear.
We're Hard! (We're Hard!)
We're Mean! (We're Mean!)
We're Strong! (We're Strong!)
We're a Team! (We're a Team!)
We're the strongest team you've ever seen,
We're the Ely Black Bears!
2nd Verse
What do we know before every game?
We're going out to win!
How do we know that we'll read the play?
We won't let 'em in!
We're Hard! (We're Hard!)
We're Mean! (We're Mean!)
We're Strong! (We're Strong!)
We're a Team! (We're a Team!)
We're the strongest team you've ever seen,
We're the Ely Black Bears!

1st Bridge
Our home is mighty Ely and we're playing for our town.
The Bear will growl across the land,
We will take the others down (down)
3rd Verse
What do we shout when we sense their fear?
Beware the mighty Bear!
What are the words that we love to hear?
Beware the mighty Bear!
We're Tough! (We're Tough!)
We're Keen! (We're Keen!)
We're Good! (We're Good!)
We're a Team! (We're a Team!)
We're the strongest team you've ever seen,
We're the Ely Black Bears!
2nd Bridge
Our home is here in Ely and there is not a shade of doubt,
Right around Minnesota, we're always on a rout!
3rd Verse - Repeated
What do we shout when we sense their fear?
Dare to beat the Bear!
What are the words that we love to hear?
Dare to beat the Bear!
We're Tough! (We're Tough!)
We're Keen! (We're Keen!)
We're Good! (We're Good!)
We're a Team! (We're a Team)
We're the strongest team you've ever seen,
We're the Ely Black Bears!
Final verse
We're Tough! (We're Tough!)
We're Keen! (We're Keen!)
We're Good! (We're Good!)
We're a Team! (We're a Team!)

Would they relocate or just close up shop?

With this being amateur, I'd assume they'd just close. A relocation would/could mean people having to uproot families/quit and get new jobs.

If the team is to dissolve, players are either left without a team or they can join another team. Due to how well the team has done though I doubt there would be many players that could make other teams.

What @Dan O'Mac said, since it is just an amateur league, players play for their local teams. Teams don't really relocate, they either fold or merge with other teams.

The only news coming out of the 1936 off season was the news that everyone knew was coming, the Stillwater Athletic Club was no longer. The Athletics were a poor excuse for a team for pretty much their entire existence, and following a 1 win season, the team knew it wouldn't be able to put out a team the following year. "It was only a matter of time" said coach Neil Sampson "We were getting to a point where players were considering leaving mid season, there was no way we could keep this team going the way things have played out the last few years."

With the A's out of the league, the Twin Cities Hockey league is now at 5 members; The Minneapolis Hockey Club, South St. Paul Mavericks, St. Paul Saints, St. Paul Victorias, and Twin Cities Vulcans.

Let me know your thoughts on Stillwater folding, do you like the newspaper presentation? Comments are appreciated!

The Twin Cities League will seem pretty awkward with just five teams.

Actually Stillwater's population reaches its lowest point in the 1940 census. Plus, they would have a larger catchment area than the two Eveleth teams each (assuming Eveleth is split evenly), Ely, Two Harbors, Grand Rapids, Soudan and Cloquet (according to 1930 population figures). But no one wants to play for a team that always finishes last. The Iron Range towns and rural towns who have teams in the Lake Superior Hockey League would probably have more passionate players and more interest. But then Stillwater is suburban (only Cloquet would be considered suburban out of these whilst the others are rural towns).

The Stillwater team folding was expected. What wasn't expected was that newspaper presentation. That's very well done and, hopefully, something that can be done for other breaking news reports in the future.

I loved it! It's very short and simple and gets right to the point without being drawn out. Plus, it gives our eyes a little break so it's easier to read. Keep up the good work!

It was a matter of time before Stillwater would close up shop... I mean, the team just outright stunk.

But, the good news is that there is plenty of opportunity for expansion in the Twin Cities League. It won't happen right away, of course. Two or three years at the five team format and then you could see another suburb try their luck with a franchise.
