I'm giving first place to Der Kaiser & Saudi Arabia because that's a difficult country to work with and they absolutely pulled it off! Great presentation as well! The decision for second place was do tough that I went back and forth on for a while. I thought Egypt had the better crest, but Russia executed the thought behind the crest better. In the end, I went with Russia because of the little touches like the Cyrillic-inspired font/numbers and the more unique kits (the Egyptian clash set reminded me too much of a Germany kit). It should be noted that Uruguay did a very admirable job for a hand-drawn concept. Group B Morocco Spain Portugal Iran Morocco ran away with this group for me... Everything about it is so well thought out with such fine touches! I love the shade of green on the clash kit. Excellent work, raysox. Second place was another close battle... every concept did at least one thing well. I really like the home Portuguese kit, I like all the detail in the Spanish crest, and I love the concept behind the Iranian branding. Ultimately, I picked Spain because I think it was the most complete concept across crest, kit, and execution. Group C Honduras Australia France Denmark This may have been the toughest group for me to judge. Nothing really jumped out at me if I'm being blunt... I think I had all four concepts in first place at one time or another. Ultimately, I decided that Honduras won the group for me because it's really hard to do a Honduras concept. There's nothing memorable about their current or past looks, and I think PackerFan98 made a nice crest and brought in some elements like the gold color to turn it into something memorable. I think the Chelsea-borrowed Nike kit turned me off to the French design and the Denmark design just didn't take enough risks for me, which left Australia in second place. To be honest, I think the execution of the Aussie concept is REALLY good (those numbers are phenomenal), but I disagree with brand direction and I think it tried to do too much between the Commonwealth star, sand dune patterns, aboriginal textures, flags, kangaroos, weird colors/patterns on the (IMO, very ugly) clash kit. In my mind, it's better to do one idea super well than to do ten ideas just ok. Still, on the strength of the craftsmanship of the concept, I have the Socceroos going through to the next round. Group D Argentina Iceland Croatia Nigeria I don't have much to say about this group... I think the top two teams are pretty evident and ultimately, maybe not enough chances were taken by the competitors in this group. Group E Serbia Switzerland Costa Rica Brazil Hats-off to Serbia and BlackBolt for an amazing concept from idea through execution. Unlike Australia, it narrowed its best ideas down to 2-3 ideas and then just hit those notes perfectly. Well done! It may be my favorite out of them all. The second place decision again came down to the wire, but the finer touches on the Swiss kit put it ahead in the end. But another tip of the cap to VikingsAiden who did a really great job with a hand-drawn concept and almost advanced for me. Group F Mexico Germany Sweden South Korea WHAT. A. GROUP. Unfortunate for all the competitors that you ended up in the group of death, as I probably would have advanced you all should you have been placed in other groups. But a well-deserved round of applause for you all! That's the best El Tri concept I've ever seen and, again, it takes only its strongest ideas and it smashes them into the back of the net like a Yeboah volley. A standing ovation for you, gswansea! I love the touches of red and the crest of the Sweden concept, but the Germany concept by Zeus hits me in a 90s Vancouver Canucks way and I cannot deny that it appeals to me. Even the presentation of the concept leans into the black/red/yellow motif and it's enough to put it over the top for me. Group G Panama England Tunisia USA Panama takes this group EASILY on the quality of the crest alone. Job well done Lafarge! The rest of this group is a nightmare. The USA concept is perhaps the gaudiest thing I've ever seen, but it gets docked real points by unintentionally converting it's patriotic home kit into a big Rising Sun flag.... yikes. The Tunisia concept features a much better crest than the actual Tunisian emblem; however, the decision to turn to a fluorescent-pink PRIMARY kit feels like an intentional decision to riff off the uber-popular Nike Nigerian kits, but without any actual rhyme or reason as to why. That doesn't fly with me, Eagles of Carthage. Which brings us to England and the three one lion. The logo is far too "American Sports" to be accepted over there and the design misses out on the importance of three lions, but the execution is good and DawgPac showed enough restraint on the kits to make a striking design. It's bold, impractical, and different... but that's enough for me to move it on. Group H Colombia Japan Senegal Poland Columbia takes this group for me on the simplicity and cleanliness of the concept. The crest is simple and brilliantly Colombian, and the kits have just enough detail to not be boring. Like the real World Cup, Senegal and Japan basically tie to move on. They both did a very good job of taking their national mascots (the lion and the three-legged raven) and local patterns/textures and incorporating them into manufacturer templates. Ultimately, I decided on Japan because the crest did a better job of tying-in the national flag and giving the three-legged crow a geometric solution. Poland I may post some more in depth analysis once it’s all done, but I hope everyone takes away something from this, I know I did back in 2014.
