Let's help the AAF

Recommended Posts

So we are several months into the Alliance (AAF: Alliance of American Football) going public.  They have named the 8 founding cities (Atlanta, Birmingham, Memphis, Orlando, Phoenix, Salt Lake City, San Antonio, San Diego), named coaches & GM's, explained their draft process and have just announced that Starter will make uniforms and fan gear for the league, but still no sign of team names, colors, logos, etc.

Let's help them out by suggesting names.  Maybe we will guess a few correctly.   Let's try this one city at a time.

The first city to be announced was Orlando, so they should reveal the name first.

What would you name the Orlando franchise?

Being from Atlanta,   I'd like to see The Flames or Thrashers name revived.  Something unique I thought of,  would  be the Phoenix bird as the imagery,  but due to Phoenix being an opposing team,  we could call it the Atlanta Spirit.  The Phoenix represents the official symbol/seal of Atlanta, and it's fun to say" The Atlanta Spirit"

Visitors could be really cool. Way outside the box, but then again ET is from way outside the planet, so...

I am going to throw 2 ideas into the ring on my own post.

1. Pick an animal native to the Ocala National Forest.

2. Something related to the Space Coast (shuttle name) but also all the way back to the Spanish.

Orlando Black Bears

Orlando Explorers

Orlando is the theme park capitol of the world.  That has to be utilized somehow into the branding.

Orlando Expos? A theme park is a type of exhibition, only it's a year round exhibition instead of limited by year or specific topics.

When I think of "Exhibition" I think of fine art or like old-timey World's Fair type stuff.   Need something more modern-ish.

If this league wants credibility,  I'd stay away from names like Destroyers, Outlaws, Explosion.. Etc.  Too many arena and semi pro teams have watered those down.

San Antonio has multiple possibilities:

Buffaloes (Buffalo Soldiers)

Roosevelts (Teddy Roosevelt and it's something different)

Friars (Franciscans and Jesuits helped found the area)

Jets (Air Force basic training and officer basic training are both done here)

Defenders, Vigilance, Crocketts, Texians (Alamo references)

Horsemen, Cavalry, Flyers, Black Jacks (Army units and Black Jack Pershing)

The name has to begin with O, L, or D for "rolls off the tongue" purposes.

  • Owls (Wizarding World of Harry Potter)
  • Lions (Disney's Animal Kingdom/Lion King)
  • Daymakers (general "making my day" nature of fun theme parks)
  • Lightning (Florida storms, could add a lot of mystic elements to represent the 'magic' of the theme park draw)

Their home games would get pretty confusing to cover...

Outlaws or Vandals for San Antonio. I'd brand the team as an old west version of the Raiders.
