Grey Facemasks For Everyone*

Recommended Posts

Best facemask colors for current helmet:

  • Buffalo: Blue
  • Miami: Teal (or whatever their color is called)
  • New England: Gray
  • Jets: Green
  • Dallas: Gray
  • Giants: Blue (No good choices)
  • Philly: Green
  • Washington: Yellow (maybe I'm just used to it? Burgundy makes more sense)
  • Baltimore: Black
  • Cincinnati: Black
  • Cleveland: Brown.  And it's not even close.  The white and gray both stuck out. Orange would be a bit "too much."
  • Pittsburgh: Black (and the gray circle around the logo does not make a gray mask work)
  • Chicago: Blue
  • Detrot: Blue
  • Green Bay: Green
  • Minnesota: Purple
  • Houston: Blue
  • Indy: BLUE
  • Jacksonville: Black
  • Tennessee: Blue
  • Atlanta: Black
  • Carolina: Black (though gray or blue would work)
  • New Orleans: Black
  • Tampa Bay: I guess what they are using.
  • Denver: Blue
  • Kansas City: Red.  I tend not to like white on a non-white helmet, but I don't think they have a great option.  I almost put white.
  • Chargers: Blue
  • Raiders: Gray
  • Arizona: Red
  • Rams: Blue
  • 49ers: Red
  • Seahawks: Blue

Going through this, I realized 1) I don't like white masks very often and 2) While I always felt a dark mask looked great with a white helmet, I also feel that way about metallic helmets (gold, silver)

White does stick out.  Seeing old clips of the Vikings, it did not work.  Same with the Browns.  But both teams have better options than gray.

Disclaimer: If this comment is about an NBA uniform from 2017-2018 or later, do not constitute a lack of acknowledgement of the corporate logo to mean anything other than "the corporate logo is terrible and makes the uniform significantly worse."

Pats had it right in the first year of that rebrand

I've never had an issue with the Redskins though? Think there's quite enough yellow in the helmet to offset the mask.

Yeah, there's plenty of yellow on the uniform... that's not my issue.  It just boils down to the simple fact that it's ugly.  Like white, a bright yellow mask jumps out and totally dominates the helmet. I agree with @Ice_Cap that the mask should not be the first thing you see. That's why I think most of the arguments against gray masks are nonsense.  The standard complaint is that they stick out... "like a sore thumb" is the monotonous cliche. No they don't... not visually.  Gray doesn't stand out visually by definition. It might set off your OCD, or offend your design sense... fine, I get that, just say that.  But a neutral gray, set against any brighter and/or darker color just fades away, unless you specifically choose to dwell on it, and talk yourself into being annoyed by it.

Oh, I want to play!  Just for fun, I'll ad a second choice for each.  (Hint; second choices will mostly be grey!)

Buffalo: grey, blue

Miami: aqua, grey

New England: navy, grey

Jets: green, grey

Dallas: grey, grey,

NY Giants: grey, also grey

Philly: black, grey

Washington: burgundy, grey

Baltimore: black, grey

Cincinnati: black, grey

Cleveland: grey, grey

Pittsburgh: black, grey

Chicago: navy, grey

Detroit: grey, blue

Green Bay: green, grey

Minnesota: black, grey

Houston: navy, grey

Indy: grey, grey

Jacksonville: black, grey

Tennessee: grey, navy

Atlanta: black, grey

Carolina: black, grey

New Orleans: black, grey

Tampa Bay: black, grey

Denver: navy, grey

Kansas City: grey, red

Chargers: white, grey

Raiders: grey, grey

Arizona: grey, black

Rams: blue, grey

49ers: grey, grey

Seahawks: grey, navy

And putting the list together, I realized there were a handful of team in which grey was the only choice, so I made it both first and second.  And there was no team that grey wouldn't be at least my second choice for.

There seems to be a lot of love for the Patriots to go back to a gray facemask.  I think the red facemask provides some much needed color.  With no helmet stripe, from certain angles the '93 helmet was too plain.

I agree that the helmet is more plain without the red mask, but that's a flaw in the helmet design, not a reason to keep the gaudy mask. Putting a red facemask on that is like putting chrome bumpers, spinners, and a spoiler on a gray Toyota Camry so that it doesn't look "plain."

For what it's worth, here's my list. First choice listed first, second choice (if any other color makes sense) second.

Buffalo: blue, gray

Miami: white, aqua

New England: gray, navy

Jets: green, white

Dallas: gray

NY Giants: gray, blue

Philly: green, black

Washington: burgundy

Baltimore: black

Cincinnati: black

Cleveland: brown, gray

Pittsburgh: black

Chicago: navy

Detroit: gray, blue

Green Bay: green

Minnesota: purple, black

Houston: navy

Indy: blue, gray

Jacksonville: black

Tennessee: gray, navy

Atlanta: black

Carolina: black, gray

New Orleans: black

Tampa Bay: pewter, black

Denver: navy

Kansas City: red, white

Chargers: navy, white

Raiders: gray, black

Arizona: gray, white

Rams: blue

49ers: gray, gold

Seahawks: navy, gray

Going through this, I was surprised at how few teams I put in a gray facemask, considering that I'm not opposed to gray masks. The only non-silver-helmeted teams for which I chose gray as the top choice were the Giants, Titans, Cardinals, and 49ers.

I disagree. The red facemask is too bright. It draws attention away from the logo and the silver shell. I feel the same way about Washington’s gold facemask and the 49ers (thankfully discarded) red facemask.

I disagree. To me they almost fade into the background and allow the helmet designs and logos stand out on their own.

The navy mask definitely works better for the Bears and the Rams. Gray does stick out.
