I think the purple jersey would have also looked nicer with purple numbers and a gold drop shadow, but I don't think the NBA allows for that, right? I just don't think the white contrasts very well with the purple. Conversely, love how the white jersey looks. Gold numbers with purple drop shadows is a really nice combo against white.

Come to think of it, white numbers with a gold drop shadow probably would have looked good against the purple. Basically an inverse of what they went with. Granted, the "real world" jersey pics do make it look a bit better.

White looks good, gold looks good. Purple is hideous. Not only does this bother me because now the uniforms are inconsistent (no side panel on others) but it looks so bad. Black, really? You’re late to the party LA.

I like the white and I like the gold. I really do. But the purple is ugly.

So I'm still not clear on the new uniform rules. Basically, teams can wear any of the 3-4 sets anytime, anywhere so long as it doesn't clash with the other guys? I didn't watch a ton of regular season games last year so I was never quite sure how it worked. I would hope the Lakers stick to gold at home, purple/white on the road, but I guess anything goes.

Why did the purple jersey have to take the hit? Why couldn't they do the unnecessary change to the white jersey?

That's kind of where I'm at. Why has the purple dropped to third tier? The purple and gold should be mirrors of each other. Really the white should be too, but if you're going to tinker with a jersey, tinker with the white.

I'm beyond glad that we got the panels and waistband on the shorts. That elevates the color balance. Very good.

But that purple... man... I was so ready to buy a purple after the mock-ups we had, but I can't with the black side panels.

My reaction to the purple uniforms that just lost the title of being forum blue.cw9Dhs2.jpg

Well, FWIW they haven't officially called it "Forum Blue" since they left the Forum in 1999, so that's nothing new...

Really the white should be too

This is what I was getting at with the purple jersey. It could have worked really well with reversed white jersey elements (like the white numbers/gold drop shadow I mentioned). It's kind of my thing that if doing multiple alternates, you more or less just do color reversals where possible and keep the template identical (so either everything has a side panel, or none do).

The black on the "statement" doesn't really bother me as they've been going with "Hollywood Nights" and "Black Mamba" looks for years anyway.  This is just the new normal for the Nike branding - the purple jersey has been relegated (to the point that it didn't even appear until after Christmas this past season) so them going a little out there with it isn't the worst thing.

Plus, the black is even more restrained than this mess.

The Hollywood Nights and Black Mamba sets were alts, and there's no excuse for the purple to be relegated to the third jersey.

And yeah, I don't love the Celtics uniform you posted, but those were also alts. That's the crucial point.

So, how do you feel about the drop shadow? Do you prefer this simple vertical drop, or the Showtime bottom-right drop shadow? I think this new incarnation is pretty nice, actually. Doesn't go to the extreme like the old style but still makes the numbers more visually interesting. Going back to the old style probably would have felt too "try hard," to put it inelegantly, and also would have reminded me of the New York Rangers (in addition to Showtime).

Agreed but Nike forced the issue by having the white elevated to one of the top-two looks so that's why we're in this situation.

If the purple were in fact the primary road jersey these would be abominations.  Since they've been flat out relegated to thirds?  I'm more indifferent.

I was excited when I first saw Conrad's rendering, but these....they look cheap as hell.

I'm glad the shorts have wide panels (I love wide panels on shorts, with no panels on the jerseys), but the striping makes these look like some generic shorts from KMart.

The black side panel...woof.

This confirms my fear, the purple jersey is done as a main road uniform. Nike can go away now.

This right here. Nike basically tried to regulate the purple jersey to an alt last year and people weren’t happy. This is just forcing everyone’s hand and saying to the world :censored: your purple jersey. The white and gold sets are now the only colors they’re really going to wear, no matter if we like it or not.

I like Nike as a company, but holy :censored: are they goddamn AWFUL at designing pro team uniforms.

I'm surprised the Lakers didn't have much say in that matter (so it would seem). Them being virtually the only team to not wear white at home was one of those "Laker things" that always stood out to me (although I guess they just didn't make the switch when everyone else did, so they were grandfathered in). While I certainly don't dislike the white jersey at all, it just makes the Lakers feel more "generic" in that sense, I guess.

I don't even get it... What did Nike have against purple? Especially given its the Lakers, *the* team you think of when you think of purple (I would assume, maybe the Vikings are just as commonplace). I'm not necessarily of the belief that any given identity is "untouchable," but to me, the Lakers wearing purple on the road is about as set in stone as the Yanks wearing pinstripes. I really would have thought Nike would have respected that.

Hopefully the Lakers simply choose to wear purple on the road more often than not. Again, I'm not sure how the new uniform system works, maybe they can't do that.
