Hockey Canada unveils new Black Alternate

Recommended Posts

The jersey debuted in their 10-0 win over Switzerland at the Hlinka Gretzky Tournament in Edmonton. The picture below shows they're using the font Nike produced for the Olympics.

Oh god no, not more BFBS...

It's not black for black's sake. It's utilized to demonstrate inclusivity since most kids growing up only wear black equipment because many of them can't afford to pay for the constant color changes of teams that is becoming a trend in minor hockey. At least that's how I've always seen it. It's nice.

It isn't. Black has been part of Canadian National Team identities for a long time, in quite a few sports. I don't know why people think the colours of a team need to match 1:1 with the colours on a flag.

It's not good, but it's as good as you can probably get with a Nike hockey jersey these days.

They've been using black since like the 30s.

Is it new? I'm pretty sure I already saw that jersey.

I think they just added a red hem stripe?

Indeed.  BFBS didn’t kick in until merchandising was a thing.

I usually hate the prominence of black over red, but I really like these. They're nice and clean, although I wouldn't mind seeing more white on them.

Also, do we really need another red hockey team? So unoriginal. Canada are you even trying here

I'm searching and it is almost the same jersey they use since 2016 except new font, Canada patch on shoulders and Maple Leafs all over a sleeves:

I like it. It reminds me of the Ottawa Senators 1992 uniform, which I thought was a good looking uniform (especially the black one).

What are they wearing around their necks? They don't look like neck guards and I've never seen players at that age/level wear neck guards.

They’re called chokers. It’s 2018, I’m not judging–Hockey Canada can do whatever they want.

Apparently I dreamed Hockey Canada making gold an official colour.

I like these uniforms. Not every uniform needs to be retro.

They are neck guards.
Some have the little "bib" part some are just basically a strip.

That tournament is U-18 so I think that's the highest level that they are mandatory (I could be wrong)
