2018 High School Football

Recommended Posts

A lot of schools in my area have moved their Friday's game up to tonight for this week, due to the fact that they have games next Monday and Friday because of weather cancellations and postponements, and they have to finish by next Friday so playoffs can get started. 3 games that close together is going to be tough on those kids, not to mention, that last game will probably be pretty sloppy for some of the smaller schools that only have 25-30 on their roster.

Currently, I have a public school who is winless making the playoffs and an undefeated school missing the playoffs. Only in New Jersey!

I'll assume there's some convoluted weirdness at play here to somehow make this even possible.

Put simply, the new formula they're using for the playoffs inadvertently considers previous results by a team. The winless team is in a difficult division and that's being considered.

There have been over 85 high schools schools which have called off one or more football games due to lack of healthy players this season. Last year that number was 48. In 2016 it was 26.

There will be at least three more tomorrow for playoff games in Maine, Missouri, and Idaho

Iowa begins their playoffs this week. Of course, Denison failed to make playoffs again, but local teams have made it.

-In Class 3A, Carroll won their district and earning an automatic bid. The sad thing? Dension did better in the RPI then Carroll did... the reward for the Tigers? A trip to unbeaten and #2 ranked Council Bluffs Lewis Central. Should Carroll somehow win this game, they would get the winner of the game between Harlan and Oskaloosa.

-In Class 2A, Carroll Kuemper won their via tiebreaker with Greene County. The Knights get the honor of facing the #1 team in the state in PCM, Monroe. Greene County earned one of the at-large bids and earned a date with #4 Benton Community.

-In Class 1A, South Central Calhoun finished as the top ranked team in the class and opens with at-large team West Lyon. Should they win, they'll host the winner of the Treynor vs. West Sioux game.

-In 8 Man, Ar-We-Va finished #2 in the state and gets to host another district champ in Northwood-Kensett. Should the Rockets win, they'll move on to face the winner of the game between Newell-Fonda and Southeast Warren.

Just got back home from watching my alma mater play. They got a 12-6 win over Fairmont Heights who came into this game with a 7-1 record. Easily the best team they've beaten this season. Their record is now 6-3, securing the first winning season the school's had since 2006. One game left in the regular season against Parkdale for homecoming.

The win today should improve their playoff hopes a lot.

Yesterday in Iowa, it was carnage... Greene County, Carroll and Carroll Kuemper saw their seasons end in the first round of the playoffs. South Central Calhoun and Ar-We-Va both won their games and move on the quarterfinal round next Friday.

Meanwhile, Washington and Oregon start their playoffs this upcoming weekend... As a reminder, each game here is loser out, winner to State (Where a newly created seeding committee will place the teams)

- In Class 3A, Kelso opens with traditional state power Rainier Beach in the Seattle area

-In Class 2A, Woodland will face Tumwater, yet another state power.

-Class 2B has 6 slots for the state tournament, so they have cross over games next Thursday night to decide who moves on. The games are...

-Morton-White Pass (Mountain Division #4) at Kalama (River Division #1)

-Onalaska (Mountain Division #3) at Toledo (River Division #2)

-Winlock (River Division #4) at Pe Ell/Willapa Valley (Coastal Division #1)

-Whakiakum (River Division #3) at Raymond (Coastal Division #2)

-Ocosta (Coastal Division #4) at Adna (Mountain Division #1)

-Illwaco (Coastal Division #3) at Napavine (Mountain Division #2)

In Oregon, Rainier clinched the Special District 1 - West championship with a win over Taft. They're #1 overall, so expect them to be the top seed when the bracket comes out later today. Clatskanie needed a win to get in. See, each Special District was given a choice how to split their six bids. Special District 1 chose to give them to the two top teams in each division (which was Scio and Madras in the East and Rainier and Amity in the West) and then the next two highest ranked teams, which the Tigers are at #8.

Go Silverton Foxes in 5A!!!!

Oregon is set now. Rainier earn the #1 seed in the 3A playoffs and opens the 1st Round with #16 Madras. The Columbians already defeated the White Buffaloes earlier in the season 28-6 in Madras. Clatskanie earned the #9 seed and hits the road to play #8 Santiam Christian in the first round.

As for Silverton, the Foxes are the #4 seed in the 5A playoffs and open with #13 Parkrose in the first round.

Welp, Saturday's win put my alma mater back above the playoff line. They're pretty much in a win and you're in situation for the regular season finale. Would be the first time Crossland has been in the playoffs since 1995 when former NFL Pro Bowler Julian Peterson played for the Cavaliers.

Thanks to a loss tonight by the team right on their tail in the regional standings, my alma mater can now clinch a playoff berth with a win tomorrow!

In Iowa, both Ar-We-Va and South Central Calhoun lost. This means there's no one left from where I lived left for the semifinals and championship, which are in the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls.

Over in Washington...

-Kelso fell to defending 3A runner up Rainier Beach 37-27. This ends the season for the Hilanders.

-Woodland heads north to play Tumwater today in 2A play

-2B played their games on Thursday with the winners (Kalama, Toledo, Pe Ell/Willapa Valley, Whakiakum, Adna and Napavine) moving on to state. There's 7 bids from this region... so how do you decide the final bid? Well, the losers of the games between the 2 and 3 seeds (Onalaska, Raymond and Illwaco) will meet in Centraila today in a Kansas tiebreaker round robin to decide that final slot. Basically, the teams will play overtime rules until someone wins and the team that goes 2-0 win the final state bid.

-In 1B, Naselle earned the top seed in the quad district and also got a first round bye. They play next weekend for a chance to make it to state.

In Oregon, both Rainier and Clatskanie won their games. This means the two rivals will meet next weekend in the quarterfinals. Oh, and just for @Wings... Silverton won their game in 5A and moves on the quarterfinals.

I was having issues finding the 2018 high school football uniform thread so I'll leave these here. The All American Bowl has a new sponsor, American Family Insurance. As a result the "presentation" jerseys have changed. It'll most likely be the end of December before we see the actual game day uniforms. The current game logo is still black and gold, but I wonder if they'll change over to blue and red since those are the main colors of the game sponsor.
